I have the UK single of this song where they replace the word "indo" with
a smoking sound effect. I remember on the radio they replaced it with
the word "smokin" so the chorus went "smokin' smokin'...sippin' on gin
and juice." Are there two cencored versions?

You know, I always thought I remembered the same thing for that edit! (Rollin' down the street smokin' smokin'...) Our station played the regular version with "indo," so my memory of where that edit came from is hazy. I own both the UK single and a US promo CD (I'll look the catalog number up when I get home), and both copies have the sound effect. Maybe there is another promo CD with a different censored version, or perhaps that was the video edit. Anyone know?

Aaron, it sounds like you and I may own different promo CD singles here. Mine (PRCD 5456) is pretty specific as to versions:

1-Radio Version (No Indo) (listed 3:41; actual 3:37)
2-Radio Version (listed 3:38; actual 3:40)
3-Laid Back Mix (listed 4:48; actual 4:47)
4-Laid Back Radio Mix (listed 3:40; actual 3:39)

Hope this helps, guys.

gentlemen...the cassingle issued as death row 98318 (ie:the official single version) contains the "radio version" and runs 3:41 and contains the "indo" reference".....i have the german cd single issued as death row 6544-95949 and it contains the proper cassingle version as the first track described as the "radio version" also with the "indo" reference.....

Jim, I just checked my promo copy, and it's the same as yours. PRCD 5456 with the exact same track listing. If you skip to the chorus on yours, you'll probably see that the "indo" is covered up by a sound effect. The version that chendagam references above does not have the sound effect, but rather it repeats the word "smoking."

Yes, they played the "smokin smokin" version on the radio all the time. I
believe it's the video version as well. Just trying to track down where to
get this version on CD!

At the radio station where I worked when it was current, we had a copy of the promo CD, but I seem to recall that it had the "smokin' smokin'" version on it. As I said, though, we didn't play this version. There must be two different promo CDs for this one. In fact, I also seem to recall this promo having an instrumental on it rather than remixes.

Any solution to this question yet?

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find out any info on this other version. I know it exists somewhere, though. Jim, did you ever check to see if your version has the sound effect or the "smokin' smokin'" edit?

Aaron, my Cut 1-Radio Version (No Indo) has "smokin'", then followed by a loud "inhaling" sfx", while Cut 2-Radio Version has "smokin' Indo", as does my Cut 3-Laid Back Mix, and Cut 4-Laid Back Radio Mix; no "smokin' smokin'" lyric anywhere on my particular promo CD single, sir.

Thank you, sir. That's the same one I have.

If I ever come across the video for this (mtv version) I'll post it on
Youtube. I'm 99% sure it was the "smokin' smokin'" version.

Scratch that...it's already up there:

It is indeed the smokin' smokin' version. Gotta love Youtube :)

I've come across two copies of the promo single since this thread started, and were both the same catalog and track listing as the ones Jim & I have. I'm beginning to think the "smokin' smokin'" version was a video-exclusive mix.

It's just that I used to hear the "smokin smokin" version on the radio back
in the day all the time. I don't think they would have played the video
version as the main radio mix.

4 years later and this is still bugging me.

I have yet to come across a promo that has the version we are
seeking. I've seen a couple pop up on eBay, but they have all had the
same catalog number and track list as the one I own. Unless there
were two pressings with the same catalog number and track list, I
haven't seen any evidence that a different promo exists.

Hard to believe it's been 5 years since I posted this! I still think about it from time to time it has to be the only radio version that has stumped me besides James "Laid." Found that one on a promo only disc but never an actual record company promo single.

Did you ever find "Laid" by James? I definitely have a promo copy of that
song…might even have two copies of it. If memory serves me correctly, it
comes in a cardboard sleeve and only has one track on the disc.

Never did find that one! I did get a copy of a "Promo Only" comp CD that had the "radio version" on it with the "sings" replacement. The same local radio station that played the "smokin' smokin'" version of Gin & Juice played this as well. I think I may have a promo of "laid" but it has the "comes" album version. I remember MTV played the "sings" version as well. Any reason why you chose this post to discuss James?

You said two posts earlier that you hadn't ever found a record company promo single of "Laid." I am now guessing that you meant you've never found a record company promo with "sings" in the lyrics.

Well, guess what? I have two copies of CDP 1010 in front of me. Neither one has any mention of a specific version. One of them has the lyrics "she only comes when she's on top" and the other one has the lyrics "she only sings when she's on top."

The matrix numbers are almost impossible to read on each one, but here's what I can see.

CDP1010 appears on both copies, and so does DISC MFG INC.

"Comes" version has W O 77408-1M
"Sings" version has W O 77632-2V

I wonder if the Snoop Dogg promo is the same way, only distinguishable by the matrix number.

I am starting to wonder this as well! I just went through my DVR from last labor day when they played all the old videos. I just watched (about 10 minutes ago) the "smokin' smokin'" version of the video! Makes me mad that I don't have this on CD even 20 years later!

I'm watching the video on YouTube, and there are apparently two different audio tracks for the video. The one I'm watching has the censored version with "smokin' indo" but it's clearly not the same version as the "Radio Mix" on the promo CD single. For one, it has an additional keyboard synth at the beginning and end, is missing some vocal overdubs, and has a different backing track in places.

The plot thickens!

Wow! I only thought it was the "smokin' smokin'" part that was different. I am telling you I used to hear this version on the radio back in '94 all the time. It was the only version my friends and I knew. We used to walk around singing "smokin' smokin'" and it wasn't because of the video on MTV. I was so disappointed when I purchased my CD single and still am!

When listening to a high quality upload of the video, it's obvious that the rhythm/drum track is not the same between the Radio Mix and the video version. The video mix is missing the "sleigh bells" that are present on the album and radio mixes.

So this means that there is now a clean video version (smokin' smokin') and a straight up video version. This link you sent sounds like it's clean but with "indo" sill in tact. Hmmmmmmm.

Yes, two different video mixes. Neither video mix matches any of the
versions I've ever found on cd.
