I thought this would make another good thread -- to have a place to list single versions that are available ONLY on RARE US CDs, and by "rare", I mean US CDs that would not be eligible for Pat's book, for instance TM Century Gold discs, promo discs, etc. I'm not sure if this thread should cover the lengthy list of CD singles, as this seems to be heavily documented elsewhere on this board. But all other rarities (containing single versions) which you think may be of interest to the people who post on this message board, let's include them here.
As I think of cases, I'll list them here. One that comes to mind is:
MIAMI SOUND MACHINE - BAD BOY - TM Century Gold (I don't have the catalog #, but for people interested in the great single mix of this top 10 hit, it's only available on this disc. Not even the various Japanese CD releases of this song contain the single mix!)

Another one that has been recently discussed in the Billy Joel thread is "Keeping The Faith" (Special Remix). It can be found on one of TM Century's Gold Disc libraries.
Before anyone tries to seek out a TM disc for a single version, I should point out a couple things. As an owner of one of their libraries, I can tell you that there are two types of Gold Discs. The original ones with red print on the disc label, and Gold Disc 3 with black print on the disc label. I will refer to them as "red" discs and "black" discs.
Most tracks on the "red" discs originated from vinyl. These discs were put together in the late 80s when many cuts were not available on CD, making them very attractive to radio stations who wanted to start playing everything from compact disc. Since there was no cd source for many of the songs, they dubbed from vinyl and did noise reduction & click elimination to make them sound better. (In fact, one of my good friends provided the vinyl sources for one of the oldies libraries that they produced.) Also, there are many cases where the red discs have "single edits" of songs, but they were edited by TM Century INCORRECTLY. I have heard several cases where this happened.
The "black" discs (Gold Disc 3) are much, much better. Almost ALL of the songs originate from CD sources, and the "single versions" were more carefully edited by TM. HOWEVER, I have still heard instances of incorrect single edits on the "black" discs, and there are still songs that were dubbed from 45s. Although I can't say for sure, I'm 95% positive that TM did not get masters from record labels to make their discs; so if a song hasn't been available on a commercial or promo CD, but it appears on a TM disc, it probably came from vinyl.
This is the case with Billy Joel - Keeping The Faith (Special Remix). I will say that it sounds VERY good, since they cleaned up all the clicks and surface noise; however, it still has that "vinyl" sound, especially noticable on the high frequencies like snare and cymbol hits and "s" sounds on the lyrics.
So, just beware of trying to track down radio promo discs that did not come from the record labels. Chances are the source is not the master tape, but whatever was available at the time the CD was produced.

Hi EdisonLite,
I would kindly like to make one clarification to your post:
"Bad Boy" by Miami Sound Machine is from very clean vinyl on the TM Century GoldDisc.
The ONLY place where the single mix exists from a TAPE SOURCE is the rare Epic promo CD ESK 1336 'Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine - Hits' which (by the way) also contains some other hard-to-find single versions such as "Falling In Love (Uh-Oh)" "Betcha Say That" as well as the Spanglish single version of "Anyhing For You".

Please note I just noticed an error...
"Anything For You" is entirely in Spanish (not 'Spanglish' as labeled on the CD & tray).

The single version wasn't in Spanish. The Spanish version was the B-side of the single, though. You can find it much easier on one of the Billboard Hits CDs.
I know she released the entire album that Anything for You is from in Spanish as well, so you could probably find it there.

Thanks Brian, I meant the English version though, the one I used to hear on American Top 40 : )
"Let It Loose" is the album from which "Anything" was extracted as a single.
I never heard of that album having been released in Spanish, the closest thing I could think of is "Exitos de Gloria Estefan" released in the US in 1990.
It contains songs mostly in Spanish plus a couple in Italian, English and Portuguese. This collection spans her career from 1977 to 1990, and has the Spanish versions of "Anything For You", "Words Get In The Way", "Don't Wanna Lose You", "Oye Mi Canto", and Portuguese version of "Here We Are".
All other albums mostly or completely in Spanish are from way before or after the "Let It Loose" period.
But if you or anybody has actual info on a fully in Spanish release of "Let It Loose" that would be interesting.

Actually, I heard that they are somehow able to sell to mobile DJs, although I don't know if that's true or not.

<"Bad Boy" by Miami Sound Machine is from very clean vinyl on the TM Century GoldDisc.>
Andrew, where are the spots that give it away as being from vinyl? A friend sent me that version but he re-EQ'd it a bit. So I can't say I've heard the exact version you have, but from the re-EQ'd version I have, I can't hear any detection of vinyl.

You can also find this version very easily on Gloria Estefan's "Greatest Hits" CD

Speaking of their Spanish albums from way before their "Let It Loose" period, does anyone know if they exist on CD in any country? I haven't found any, and with their worldwide popularity (especially in spanish markets), I'm surprised Sony didn't release those early, Spanish albums on CD anywhere (at least, from what I can tell.)

Edison, I bought the "Greatest Hits" CD when it was released, and don't recall the single version on it.
Maybe I'm wrong, but from what I can remember, the single version had at least two different arrangements from the album version.
1) The final "Don't Wanna Say Goodbye" verse from the album version was ommitted. Single version vocals ended with "....sometimes things don't work out right, and you just have to say goodbye...".
2) The guitar arrangements after her final vocals were slightly different on the single version.
Is this the version included on your "Greatest Hits"? I'm at work now so can't check mine.

Ok, just gave it a listen to "Anything For You" on the Greatest Hits CD and it is the album version.
I have an mp3 of what I believe is the single version, and it does have the two above mentioned differences with the original version. Also, it clocks in at 3.37 against the 4.03 on the album.
On the promo CD track times Andrew posted, per the running time looks like it is the album version, but maybe the mp3 file I have is an early fade of the single version...
I'm confused now, guess I'll find out once I get the CD in a couple of weeks, I was feeling motivated and bought it. : p
Andrew, if you care to listen to the track on your promo CD and confirm which version it is, and kill my curiosity earlier, I don't mind either.

Hi folks,
I've been really busy and I haven't been able to respond to the private messages, but there is some confusion here with regard to "Anything For You"...
The single version is the LONGER version with "Don't wanna say goodbye" at the extro.
The original album version is the SHORTER version with out Gloria's extra tag line (& shorter fade).
P.S. to EdisonLite...
The 'vinyl sound' I detect on the "Bad Boy" GoldDisc is in the intro (mild turntable rumble on the synthesized percussion intro)& a little polystyrene sounding high end. (I admit it's hard to articulate in the printed word...)

Aha! Thanks a bunch Andrew, all this time I thought it was the other way around.
I'll comfort myself that the Hits promo CD buy is still a good buy for the rest of the tracks, hehehe.

An ebay seller told me that the 45 version of "Learning To Fly" by Pink Floyd is available on a VA comp called Super Sessions, Vol. 1. Although it wasn't a top 40 hit, it received airplay on MTV and still gets played on the classic rock stations in my market. I ordered this CD, and I'll report my findings when I receive it.
FYI, the 45 version has an edit in the instrumental section in the middle of the song, and it removes the wind sound effects that are heard on the fade out of the LP version. Run time is approximately (4:18).

I just compared "Bad Boy" from the TM Century Disc to the version on the promo "Hits" CD (thanks to Andy C) and I find them to be identical, that there is no vinyl noise on the intro of the TM Century version I have. But, as Andy has pointed out, there are 3 TM Century discs with "Bad Boy" so it's possible his TM Century came from vinyl, whereas one (or both) of the other TM Century CDs came from master tape.
Therefore, anyone who wants the single mix of "Bad Boy" can get it off of the promo "Hits" CD, 1 or 2 TM Century Discs, and possibly the import "Greatest Hits" CD from the UK. Speaking of which, that CD (as listed on amazon.com as the "1997 version"), lists it as having "Bad Boy (remix)" (one of 2 bonus cuts on the UK version of "Greatest Hits"). But of course, there's the album mix, the single mix, and 1 or 2 other remixes of "Bad Boy". So does anyone have the UK version of "Greatest Hits" and can they confirm exactly which "remix" of "Bad Boy" is on there?
If anyone wants a link to this version of the CD, it's:

The copy I have of "Bad Boy" from TM's library does not contain noise during the intro. I know that some of the older discs that had vinyl transfers were later cleaned up and labeled "GoldDisc 3" with the exact same library number. For example, I have GD 101 (red typeface) and GD3 101 (black typeface). The newer disc corrected some wrong versions and has better sound quality (sources) than the old.

I have the Promo CD (US Version) with the Edit and LP versions on it. You can also find the commercial UK single all over Ebay. This CD also contains an edited version of "one slip" that appears on the same album.
