As promised in a previous thread, I now submit for your viewing pleasure a list of promo CDs from my personal collection containing radio edits that aren't yet included in Top 40 Music on Compact Disc. I will list artist and song title, the tracks on each CD, the actual run times (which I'm sure you all know is sometimes quite different from the corresponding printed run times), and the catalog number for reference purposes. As a rule of thumb, I'll make a note whenever the actual run time differs from its printed run time by four seconds or more. I'll also throw in my own personal comments as I see fit. If anyone has any comments, corrections, or additions of their own, please feel free to chime in. Due to the fact that I'm currently juggling a busy schedule, I only have time to list a handful of promo CDs right now. However, I plan to gradually add more over time. I hope you'll find this information useful. And now, without further ado!...

PAULA ABDUL - WILL YOU MARRY ME? (Virgin PRCD 4471)
1) Edit - 3:43
2) LP version - 4:23
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:43) and (4:23); commerical copies were all (4:23)

PAULA ABDUL - MY LOVE IS FOR REAL (Virgin DPRO12739)
1) Radio Edit - 4:22
2) Short Intro Edit - 3:52
3) R&B Remix - 4:02
4) LP Version - 5:19
Comments: The R&B remix is the same remix that appears on Paula's Greatest Hits CD (Virgin 48980). I'm having a hard time deciding if this remix should count as an official Top 40 "DJ edit". Of course, the final decision is up to Pat!
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contain edits that run (3:52), (4:22), and (5:19), plus an R&B remix that runs (4:02); commercial copies were all (4:22)

BRYAN ADAMS - LET'S MAKE A NIGHT TO REMEMBER (A&M CDP 00283)
1) Edit - 4:35
2) LP Version - 6:18
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:35) and (6:18); commercial copies were all (6:18)

AEROSMITH - LIVIN' ON THE EDGE (Geffen PRO-CD-4515)
1) (CHR Mix - Edit #1/No guitar solo) - 4:00
2) (CHR Mix - Edit #2) - 4:51
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:00) and (4:51); commercial copies were all (6:06)

AEROSMITH - CRYIN' (Geffen PRO-CD-4549)
1) LP VERSION - 5:07
2) FADE - 4:14
AEROSMITH - CRYIN' (Geffen PRO-CD-4528)
1) CHR Mix With Edited Intro - 4:02
Comments: Two different promo CDs were issued for this song. The disc with the CHR Mix seems to be the more difficult of the two to find. It's also the version I remember hearing most on local Top 40 radio.
My conclusion: Some DJ copies of this single run (4:14) and (5:07), while others run (4:02); commercial copies were all (5:07)

AEROSMITH - AMAZING (Geffen PRO-CD-4565)
1) CHR EDIT - 4:11
2) ORCHESTRAL/EDIT - 4:11
3) ORCHESTRAL - 5:55
4) LP VERSION - 5:55
Comments: I can recall some radio stations playing the orchestral version as the song was falling off the charts. The same was true for the follow-up single "Crazy" (see entry below). Whether or not to acknowledge these orchestral versions in the book is, I suppose, debatable.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contain edits that run (4:11) and (5:55) in addition to orchestral mixes which also run (4:11) and (5:55); commercial copies were all (5:55)

AEROSMITH - CRAZY (Geffen PRO-CD-4624)
1) Edit - 4:03
2) Orchestral Edit - 4:03
3) LP Version - 5:16
4) Orchestral Version - 5:34
Comments: (See my comments for "Amazing" above.)
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contain edits that run (4:03) and (5:16), in addition to orchestral mixes which run (4:03) and (5:34), although the label states a time of (5:30) for the latter mix; commercial copies were all (5:16)

AEROSMITH - FALLING IN LOVE (IS HARD ON THE KNEES) (Columbia CSK 9412)
1) Rock Radio Mix (3:25)
2) Top 40 Mix (3:20)
3) Album Version (3:24)
Comments: All three mixes on this promo CD sound so similar to one another that one must listen hard to detect distinguishing characteristics. The fact that the run times are nearly identical creates a bit of a headache when trying to form a concluding comment about these radio edits.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single feature a "Top 40" mix, a "Rock Radio" mix, and the commercial version, which runs (3:20), (3:25), and (3:24), respectively

More coming soon... Stay tuned!

FIONA APPLE – CRIMINAL (Sony OSK0771)
1) Edit – 4:42
2) Album Version – 5:41
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:42) and (5:41); commercial copies were all (5:41)

AQUA – LOLLIPOP (CANDYMAN) (MCA 5P-4080)
1) Radio Edit – 2:53
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (2:53); commercial copies were all (3:34)

AZ YET – LAST NIGHT (LaFace 4181)
1) Radio Edit – 4:17
2) Album Version – 4:28
Comments: The radio edit is available on the various artist compilation CD: LaFace Records Presents The Platinum Collection (LaFace 26049).
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:17) and (4:28); commercial copies were all (4:28)

BABYFACE – MY KINDA GIRL (Solar/Epic ZSK 2086)
1) Radio Mix – 5:07
2) Racquet Gass Dub – 6:07
3) Scratch Mix – 7:07
4) Single Version – 4:08
5) Instrumental – 4:28
6) L.A. Face Bonus Beats – 5:26
7) Dope Dutt Dub Mix - 5:27
Comments: I think most would agree that it'd be a mess trying to list all seven of these remixes as “DJ edits” in the book, especially considering that this song never garnered enough airplay to warrant recognition for seven different mixes. (I’m not even sure why any radio station would see a need to program the “instrumental” version on their playlist.) Therefore, I’m going to focus on the two versions that would most likely interest Top 40 radio programmers – the “radio mix” and the “single version”. Now what's interesting here is the commercial vinyl 45 and cassette single releases both feature the radio mix and do not contain the so-called single version. I'm guessing that the single version was originally intended to be the 45 version, but for whatever reason the execs at Solar later decided to promote the extended radio mix as the official commercial 45 single instead. Thus, to sum up the paradox here, the 5:07 "radio mix" is actually the 45 version, while the 4:08 "single version" is an edit of the radio mix. Incidentally, the LP version runs 4:38 and is not included on this promo CD.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contain edits that run (5:07) and (4:08); commercial copies were all (5:07)

BLACKSTREET – BEFORE I LET YOU GO (Interscope PRCD5861)
1) Radio Edit (short outro) – 3:34
2) Radio Edit – 3:48
3) LP version – 4:59
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:34), (3:48), and (4:59); commercial copies were all (5:00)

BLACKSTREET – NO DIGGITY
Comments: I have a "rapless" radio edit of this song that runs 3:59 and appears on a mainstream radio CD subscription series made exclusively for DJs, called Promo Only. I have yet to see this version on an actual promotional CD release, but it received a lot of airplay where I live. If anyone can verify whether or not this edit appears on its own promo disc, please feel free to post your comments.

BLESSID UNION OF SOULS – I WANNA BE THERE (EMI DPRO-11688)
1) Radio Version – 4:08
2) Blessid Radio Version – 4:08
3) Album Version – 4:27
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:08) and (4:27); commercial copies were all (4:27)

More promo CD radio edits on the way soon...

MICHAEL BOLTON - GEORGIA ON MY MIND (Columbia CSK 73490)
1) SINGLE VERSION EDIT - 3:08
2) SINGLE VERSION - 4:57
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:08) and (4:57); commercial copies were all (4:57)

MICHAEL BOLTON - CAN I TOUCH YOU... THERE? (Columbia CSK-7236)
1) Edited Version - 4:48
2) Single Version - 5:15
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:48), not (4:43) as the label states, and (5:15); commercial copies were all (5:15)

BON JOVI - BED OF ROSES (Mercury CDP838)
1) Edit Version - 5:04
2) Album Version - 6:32
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (5:04) and (6:32); commercial copies were all (6:32)

BON JOVI - IN THESE ARMS (Mercury CDP837)
1) Edit - 4:29
2) Album Version - 5:19
3) Live Version - 6:06
Comments: I cannot think of a compelling reason to count the live version as an official Top 40 radio edit.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:29) and (5:19); commercial copies were all (5:19)

BON JOVI - THIS AIN'T A LOVE SONG (Mercury JOVDJ17)
1) Radio Edit - 4:21
2) AC Mix - 4:21
2) Album Version - 5:04
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:21) and (5:04); commercial copies were all (5:04)

BOYZ II MEN - 4 SEASONS OF LONELINESS (Motown 374632077-2)
1) RADIO EDIT - 4:26
2) LP VERSION - 4:51
3) B II M VERSION - 5:30
Comments: The B II M Version is basically an extended version of the LP Version, so I think a case can be made to count this as a radio edit.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single runs (4:26), (4:51), and (5:30); commercial copies were all (4:51)

BOYZ II MEN - A SONG FOR MAMA (Motown 374632080)
1) Radio Edit - 4:34
2) Album Version - 5:02
3) Instrumental - 5:05
Comments: Again, I'm not sure why an instrumental version of a Top 40 hit would be programmed on a Top 40 radio playlist, so I'll focus here on the radio and album versions only.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:34) and (5:02); commercial copies were all (5:02)

TONI BRAXTON - LOVE SHOULDA BROUGHT YOU HOME (LaFace LFPCD-4835)
1) Radio Edit - 4:16
2) Album Version - 4:56
3) Slow Sensual Mix - 3:32
Comments: I've now pretty much determined as a rule of thumb that I won't count remixes as DJ edits unless they are explicitly aimed at a specific radio format (such as a "Rock" or "AOR" remix, an "R&B" mix, an "AC" or "Hot AC" mix, etc.) or if I feel a particular remix received significant enough airplay to help propel the song up the charts. The Slow Sensual Mix in this case does not fall into any of the aforementioned categories.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:16) and (4:56); commercial copies were all (4:56)

MEREDITH BROOKS - BITCH (Capitol DPRO-12014)
1) Edit - 3:58
Comments: The radio edit fades out :13 sooner than the 45 and LP version. This edit does appear on the various artist compilation Absolutely The Best of the 90's (Fuel 2000 302061348), but the comment currently listed in the book beside that CD title is: (faded :14 earlier than the 45 or LP). It would be more accurate for the comment to read: (radio edit).
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:58); commercial copies were all (4:11)

Greetings once again, Top 40 music collectors! My apologies for the lengthy absence since my last posting as I've been quite busy with work and travel among other things. I dug deeper through my CD collection recently and found a few promo discs that should've been included within my previous posts. I'll list these first and then will resume alphabetically from where I last left off.

AEROSMITH - LOVE IN AN ELEVATOR (Geffen PRO-CD-3645)
1) CHR Edit with Intro - 3:37
2) CHR Edit - 3:20
3) Full Daypart Rock Edit - 4:34
4) LP Version - 5:38
Comments: The LP version, as presented on this disc, includes the introduction, whereas the actual LP version does not. Each of the three edits are taken from the LP version and are not remixes.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single ran (3:20), (3:37), (4:34), and (5:38); commercial copies were all (3:37)

BAD ENGLISH - POSSESSION (Epic ESK 73398)
1) RADIO EDIT - 4:17
2) LP VERSION - 5:07
Comments: I don't have a copy of the commercial single, but according to Joel Whitburn in Pop Annual, the run time of the 45 version is 4:47. Since Pat does make note of the LP Version in the 10th edition of his book, I'm wondering if he or anyone else has a commercial single copy and can verify its actual run time? For the time being, I'll just assume that the 45 version and radio edit are different.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:17) and (5:07); commercial copies were all (4:47?)

JON BON JOVI - BLAZE OF GLORY (Mercury CDP 279)
1) Edit - 4:22
2) LP Version - 5:33
Comments: The comment "LP version" is listed next to each CD appearance of this song in the 10th edition. However, Joel Whitburn lists the 45 run time in Pop Annual at 5:30, which is the approximate length of the LP version. I e-mailed Pat directly about this and he's looking into the actual run time of the 45 (I don't have a commercial single copy for reference). If it turns out the commercial single does run 5:30, then the 4:22 version on this promo CD would be a radio edit and thus the "LP version" comment in the book would probably need to be removed since the 45 version and the LP version are the same. If anyone has a commercial single copy of "Blaze of Glory", please feel free to post your observations.
My conclusion (if Whitburn proves to be correct): DJ copies of this single run (4:22), not (4:18) as stated on the label, and (5:33), not (5:38) as stated on the label; commercial copies were all (5:30?)

JON BON JOVI - MIRACLE (Mercury CDP 331)
1) Edit - 4:33
2) LP Version - 5:06
Comments: Same situation as "Blaze of Glory" above. The comment "LP version" is listed next to the lone CD appearance of this song in the 10th edition, but Joel Whitburn lists the 45 run time at 5:00, which is close to the length of the LP version. Pat is also looking into the actual 45 run time here. If it turns out the commercial single does run around 5:00, then the 4:33 version on this promo CD would be a radio edit and therefore the "LP version" comment in the book would probably need to be removed since the 45 version and the LP version are the same. Once again, if anyone has "Miracle" on a commercial single format, your observations are most welcome.
My conclusion (if Whitburn proves to be correct): DJ copies of this single run (4:33), not (4:28) as stated on the label, and (5:06); commercial copies were all (5:00?)

CHER - HEART OF STONE (Geffen PRO-CD-3989)
1) Remix/Fade - 3:50
2) Remix - 4:09
3) CHR Version - 3:50
4) LP Version - 4:15
CHER - HEART OF STONE (Geffen PRO-CD-3822)
1) CHR Version - 3:50
CHER - HEART OF STONE (Geffen PRO-CD-4005)
1) Heartbeat Version Faded
2) Full Heartbeat Version
Comment: There is a grand total of three promo CDs available for this song. I don't have the disc containing the Heartbeat versions (PRO-CD-4005), which is why there are no run times listed beside those tracks. I believe the 45 version run time is 3:50, but regretably I don't have a commercial single copy to verify which version of the song appears on it. I'll hold off on making a definitive conclusion until I can fill in these gaps of missing info. As always, any and all input is welcome!

DESMOND CHILD - LOVE ON A ROOFTOP (Elektra PRCD 8350-2)
1) Edit - 4:15
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:15), not (4:00) as the label incorrectly states; commercial single copies were all (5:16)

CINDERELLA - DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU GOT (TILL IT'S GONE) (Mercury CDP 25)
1) Edit - 5:21
Comments: This promo CD is an odd duck. The label states that there are two tracks on this disc: 1) EDIT VERSION - 4:58, and 2)ALBUM VERSION - 5:56. In actuality, there is only one track on this CD and it runs 5:21. After conferring with forum member edtop40, who has this promo CD as well as the commercial single release, he informed me that the 45 version also runs 5:21 and is the exact same version that appears on the promo disc. He further noted that the commercial 45 label misstates the run time at 4:58. Thanks, edtop40!
My conclusion: CD copies of this DJ promo single show run times of (4:58) and (5:56) on the label, but actually contains only one edit which runs (5:21); commercial copies were all (5:21), even though the label states a run time of (4:58)

CINDERELLA - COMING HOME (Mercury CDP 69)
1) EDIT - 3:59
2) ALBUM - 4:54
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:59) and (4:54); commercial copies were all (4:54)

PHIL COLLINS - I WISH IT WOULD RAIN DOWN (Atlantic PR 3120-2)
1) Edit - 4:48
2) LP Version - 5:28
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:48) and (5:28); commercial copies were all (5:28)

PHIL COLLINS - EVERYDAY (Atlantic PR 5300 and 5406)
1) Everyday - 4:56
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:56); commercial copies were all (5:41)

COLOR ME BADD - THINKIN' BACK (Giant PRO-CD-5169)
1) Radio Edit - 3:49
2) XXX Version - 4:39
3) More Radio Edit - 3:44
Comments: The XXX Version is simply a different edit of the LP version, despite the very misleading description!   Also, not sure why the shortest edit on the disc is dubbed the "More Radio Edit". All three edits are taken directly from the LP and 45 version. The regular 3:49 Radio Edit was the version I most commonly heard on radio, though I believe all three received airplay.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:44), (3:49), and (4:39); commercial copies were all (5:21)

COLOR ME BADD - CHOOSE (Giant PRO-CD-6773-R)
1) RADIO EDIT - 4:00
2) VERSION #1 - 3:50
3) VERSION #2 - 3:32
4) VERSION #3 - 3:51
5) VERSION #4 - 4:20
Comments: Versions #1-4 are all just a bunch of remixes, so I will not count them as official Top 40 radio edits.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:00); commercial copies were all (4:22)

DEBORAH COX - WHO DO U LOVE (Arista ASCD-2931)
1) Radio Edit - 3:58
2) Gass Mix - 4:24
3) Morales Mix - 4:45
Comments: A different promo CD of this song (Arista 12951-2) was serviced to some radio stations and features only the Gass and Morales mixes, so it seems that the record label made a concerted effort to get these remixes some airplay. I recall hearing the Morales mix occasionally on my local Top 40 stations, but not the Gass mix. Granted, my listening experience is purely anecdotal (which by the way should always be kept in mind when reading my commentary) and does not indicate airplay trends for the entire country. This is a tough call, but I suppose a case can be made to count these particular mixes as radio edits. Incidentally, the Morales Mix appears on Deborah Cox's self-titled CD (Arista 18781-2), but is not listed in the 10th edition.
My conclusion: Some DJ copies of this single run (3:58), (4:24), and (4:45); commercial copies were all (4:21)

DEF LEPPARD - HAVE YOU EVER NEEDED SOMEONE SO BAD (Mercury CDP 722)
1) Radio Edit - 4:30
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:30); commercial copies were all (5:21)

DEPECHE MODE - IT'S NO GOOD (Reprise/Mute PRO-CD-8662)
1) Radio Edit - 4:04
2) Album Version - 5:57
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:04) and (5:57); commercial copies were all (5:27)

From here on out, I've decided that whenever I post info on a promo CD containing remixes I don't consider to be official Top 40 radio edits, I will state my conclusion in the following manner: "DJ copies of this single contains an edit [or edits] that runs (X:XX)", instead of: "DJ copies of this single run (X:XX). I just think this slight difference in wording is more accurate and encompassing in that the statement implies that other content exists on the promo disc besides the radio edits.

DESTINY'S CHILD - BILLS, BILLS, BILLS (Columbia CSK 40443)
1) Radio Edit - 3:59
2) Instrumental - 4:03
Comments: As usual, I do not consider an instrumental version of a hit as a radio edit.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contain an edit that runs (3:59); commercial copies were all (4:15)

EN VOGUE - MY LOVIN' (YOU'RE NEVER GONNA GET IT) (Eastwest PRCD4464-2)
1) Radio Edit - 4:11
2) Extended Edit - 4:59
3) LP Version - 4:41
4) Extended Mix - 4:12
Comments: The Extended Edit and Extended Mix are remixes, and will not be classified as official radio edits.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contain edits that run (4:11) and (4:41); commercial copies were all (4:41)

ESCAPE CLUB - SHAKE FOR THE SHEIK (Atlantic PR 2538-2)
1) 7" Version - 3:40
2) New AOR Mix - 3:45
Comments: Since the AOR Mix is aimed at a specific radio format (Album Oriented Rock), this falls under my criteria to count this as an official radio edit. The LP version runs 3:59, but is not noted as such in the 10th editon.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:40) and (3:45); commercial copies were all (3:40)

FASTER PUSSYCAT - HOUSE OF PAIN (Elektra PR 8139-2)
1) Edit - 4:28
2) LP Version - 5:47
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:28) and (5:47); commercial copies were all (5:47)

FILTER - TAKE A PICTURE (Reprise PRO-CD-4214)
1) H&H Mix - 4:14
2) Album Edit - 4:22
FILTER - TAKE A PICTURE (Reprise PRO-CD-9980-R)
1) Edit - 4:22
2) Album Version - 6:01
Comments: The H&H Mix got frequent airplay on Top 40 radio. This mix was also the one issued on a mainstream radio CD subscription series serviced exclusively to Top 40 DJs, called Promo Only.
My conclusion: Some DJ copies of this single run (4:14) and (4:22), while other run (4:22) and (6:01); commercial copies were all (4:22)

NELLY FURTADO - TURN OUT THE LIGHT (Dreamworks DRMR 13838-2)
1) Remix feat. Ms. Jade and Timbaland - 4:39
2) Radio Edit - 3:36
3) Sunshine Reggae Mix - 4:02
Comments: The radio edit was the version I always heard on mainstream Top 40 stations. I 'm not certain but I believe the Remix and the Sunshine Reggae Mix were programmed on some of the more rhythmic/dance-oriented Top 40 playlists. I'm torn in this case as to whether or not to acknowledge these remixes as official radio edits though because I don't know how much of an overall impact they had on the song's success nationally. I'm tilted toward focusing on what mainstream Top 40 radio played, so I'll state the radio edit run time only in my conclusion. I'll leave it to Pat to be the official judge. Also, this song was never released on a commercial single format, so there really is no 45 version. The LP version runs 4:35.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contain a radio edit that runs (3:36)

PETER GABRIEL - STEAM (Geffen PRO-CD-4479)
1) Edit - 4:44
2) LP version - 6:00
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:44) and (6:00); commercial copies were all (6:00)

GHOST TOWN DJS - MY BOO (Columbia/So So Def 6636392)
1) LP Radio Edit - 4:09
2) Quiet Storm Radio Edit - 4:04
3) Hitman's Club Mix - 5:46
Comments: I'm not sure the Quiet Storm Radio Edit qualifies as an official Top 40 radio edit, given that it's a different mix than the LP version and that it probably didn't receive significant enough airplay to impact the song's overall chart performance. The same goes for the Hitman's Club Mix.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contain an edit that runs (4:09); commercial copies were all (5:45)

GLASS TIGER - I'M STILL SEARCHING (EMI-Manhattan DPRO 04011)
1) L.P. version - 3:57
2) Edit - 3:50
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:57) and (3:50); commercial copies were all (3:56)

GO WEST - FAITHFUL (EMI DPRO-04897)
1) SINGLE VERSION - 4:10
2) ALBUM VERSION - 4:23
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:10), not (4:04) as the label states, and (4:23); commercial copies were all (4:23)

LOU GRAMM - TRUE BLUE LOVE (Atlantic PR3059-2)
1) Edit - 4:24
2) LP Version - 4:56
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:24) and (4:56); commercial copies were all (4:56)

A minor correction on the LOU GRAMM - TRUE BLUE LOVE entry:
The actual LP version run time should read 4:55. Therefore, my revised conclusion now reads: DJ copies of this single run (4:24) and (4:55); commercial copies were all (4:55)

Hey, I know it's only a one second difference, but we're all about precision and getting it right around here, no? :-)

I have a couple of additional corrections I'd like to note before posting the next installment of DJ edits. Commercial single copies of Depeche Mode's "It's No Good" all run (5:57), not (5:27) as previously stated. Also, the correct title of Nelly Furtado's aforementioned single is "Turn off the Light", not "Turn out the Light". Sorry, sometimes my brain and fingers fail to sync up properly... especially when I'm typing late at night. :-)

DON HENLEY - THE LAST WORTHLESS EVENING (Geffen PRO-CD-3734)
1) 7" Edit - 4:29
2) Edit/Long Intro - 4:37
Comments: I no longer have a cassette single copy of this song, but I'm 99% certain it was the same as the LP version which ran 6:01. Yet, as you can see, this promo CD lists the 4:29 run time as being the 7" edit. So does this mean then that the commercial vinyl 45 pressings were 4:29, not 6:01 like the cassette single pressings? Anyone have a vinyl 45 copy that can check this out?
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single ran (4:29) and (4:37); commercial copies were all (6:01?)

DON HENLEY - THE HEART OF THE MATTER (Geffen PRO-CD-3955)
1) Edit/Remix - 3:52
2) LP Version - 5:21
3) AC Edit - 3:59
Comments: The Edit/Remix was commonly heard on Top 40 radio, which features an overall different guitar mix and the percussion begins as soon as the song starts. I believe this is the same mix that appears on commercial single copies. The AC Edit is simply an edit of the LP version.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:52), (3:59), and (5:21); commercial copies were all (3:52)

HOOTIE & THE BLOWFISH - OLD MAN & ME (WHEN I GET TO HEAVEN) (Atlantic PRCD 6694-2)
1) Radio Edit - 4:07
2) Album Version - 4:24
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:07) and (4:24); commercial copies were all (4:24)

WHITNEY HOUSTON - I'M YOUR BABY TONIGHT (Arista ASCD-2108)
1) I'm Your Baby Tonight - 4:13
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:13); commercial copies were all (4:58)

JADE - EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK (Giant PRO-CD-7285)
1) RADIO EDIT - 3:44
2) ALBUM VERSION - 5:13
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:44) and (5:13); rear CD jacket mistakenly lists both versions as having a run time of (5:16); commercial copies were all (5:14)

I have the commercial copy of "Last Worthless Evening" which by actual timing runs (6:02) even though the label states (6:05).

To answer your question regarding the running time of the commercial 45 "Possession" by Bad English, the label states LP version 5:05 and it truly does run 5:05.

First off, I'd like to thank Pat Downey for his recent input regarding my DJ edit postings. He was also kind enough to inform me that he recently obtained vinyl commercial 45s of Jon Bon Jovi's "Blaze Of glory" and "Miracle". For "Blaze", Pat says the vinyl 45 both states and actually runs (5:38), but notes that there is an opening sound effect on the 45 that is longer than the Blaze Of Glory soundtrack CD version, which runs (5:33). He further explains that the cd version has a :12 hidden introduction that isn't found on the 45. But due to the longer sound effect, Pat says he will continue to list the current entries of all CDs containing the (5:33) version of this song as "(LP version)", but will change those listings that run (5:38) in his book to "(45 version)" since the (5:38) entries contain the longer sound effect found on the vinyl 45.

As for "Miracle", Pat informs me that the commercial vinyl 45 states a (5:08) run time, but really clocks in at (5:06). Nevertheless, it's identical to the version found on the Blaze Of Glory soundtrack CD, so he will remove the comment "(LP version)" on that listing for the 11th edition.

By the way, here is an update of some of my previous entries based on info that Pat recently submitted on this board:

BAD ENGLISH - POSSESSION
Conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:17) and (5:07); commercial copies were all (5:05)

DON HENLEY - THE LAST WORTHLESS EVENING
Conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:29) and (4:37); commercial copies were all (6:02)

And now, back to where we left off...

JARS OF CLAY - FLOOD (Essential/Silvertone JDJ-42342-2)
1) Radio Edit - 3:14
2) LP Version - 3:30
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:14) and (3:30); commercial copies were all (3:30)

JODECI - GET ON UP (MCA 3695)
1) Radio Edit - 3:40
2) Mr. Dalvin Remix - 4:15
3) Instant Flava Mix - 4:24
Comments: The remixes here differentiate significantly from the original version, and therefore will not be counted as Top 40 radio edits.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contain an edit that runs (3:40); commercial copies were all (3:47)

JON B FEATURING BABYFACE - SOMEONE TO LOVE (Yab Yum/Sony 550 BSK 77895)
1) Edit - 4:05
2) Album Version - 4:33
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:05) and (4:33); commercial copies were all (4:32)

JEREMY JORDAN - WANNAGIRL (Giant PRO-CD-6104)
1) Radio Edit - 3:53
2) Album Version - 4:29
3) Instrumental - 4:29
Comments: The instrumental won't count as a radio edit.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:53) and (4:29); commercial copies were all (4:29)

JOSHUA KADISON - JESSIE
Comments: I have a DJ edit of this song that runs (4:20) on one of my Promo Only: Mainstream Radio subscription CDs and is the edit I'm accustomed to hearing on the radio. The LP version runs 5:18 and I believe the commercial 45 version does too, although I don't have a copy offhand for verification. I haven't yet been able to locate a copy of "Jessie" on an official U.S. promo CD single. This 4:20 edit appears on nearly all European CD single and promo releases. Anyone have the U.S. promo disc or can track one down? Please let me know.

KID ROCK - ONLY GOD KNOWS WHY (Atlantic PRCD 9160)
1) Radio Edit - 4:15
2) LP Version - 5:25
Comments: This song was never released on a commercial single format, so there is no 45 version. The LP version runs 5:25.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:15) and (5:25)

LENNY KRAVITZ - IT AIN'T OVER 'TIL IT'S OVER (Virgin PRCD 3883)
1) It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over - 3:45
Comments: Both the DJ edit and the 45 version run 3:45. The LP version runs 4:01. All domestic CD appearances of "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over" to date are the LP version, though they are not noted as such in the 10th edition.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:45), though the label incorrectly lists the run time at (3:15); commercial copies were all (3:45)

DONNA LEWIS - I LOVE YOU ALWAYS FOREVER (Atlantic PRCD 6758)
1) Radio Edit - 3:21
2) Philly Remix - 4:39
Comments: The Philly Remix appears on Donna Lewis' Now in a Minute CD (Atlantic 82762). I don't recall this remix getting much airplay, if any, so I don't think it can be classified a legitimate Top 40 radio edit.
Conclusion: DJ copies of this single contain an edit that runs (3:21); commercial copies were all (3:56)

A couple of updates before I resume the list...

Pat was kind enough to notify me that the commercial 45 version of Cher's "Heart of Stone" is the "Heartbeat Version Faded" and it runs 4:01. I'm going to revise my previously posted entry for this title as follows:

CHER - HEART OF STONE (Geffen PRO-CD-3989)
1) Remix/Fade - 3:50
2) Remix - 4:09
3) CHR Version - 3:50
4) LP Version - 4:15
CHER - HEART OF STONE (Geffen PRO-CD-3822)
1) CHR Version - 3:50
CHER - HEART OF STONE (Geffen PRO-CD-4005)
1) Heartbeat Version Faded - 4:01
2) Full Heartbeat Version - 4:16?
Comment: There is a grand total of three promo CDs available for this song. I don't have the disc containing the Heartbeat versions (PRO-CD-4005), but I recently came across a copy online with the run times listed on the disc itself. It states a time of 4:00 for the Heartbeat Version Faded, but I will go with Pat's confirmed run time of 4:01. I've placed a question mark next to the Full Heartbeat Version run time of 4:16 until I or someone else can confirm it. It was tough trying to summarize the multitude of versions and run times available for this single in my conclusion below. Maybe Pat can come up with a better conclusion. For the time being, I guess I'll just continue to keep it simple and straigtforward...
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:50), (4:01), (4:09), (4:15), and (4:16?); commercial copies were all (4:01)

Also, I'd like to add to my conclusion of another previously posted entry:

KID ROCK - ONLY GOD KNOWS WHY (Atlantic PRCD 9160)
1) Radio Edit - 4:15
2) LP Version - 5:25
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:15) and (5:25); the (4:15) edit is a clean version with censored lyrics

We return now to our regularly scheduled program... :-)

HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS - COUPLE DAYS OFF (EMI DPRO#04752)
1) AOR VERSION - 4:55
2) ALBUM EDIT - 3:44
3) SINGLE EDIT - 3:14
Comments: The AOR version is the same as the LP version, although it sounds like additional equalization, or EQ, was used on the AOR version to give it a hotter, brighter sound. The Album Edit and Single Edit are edits of the LP version.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:14), (3:44), and (4:55); commercial copies were all (3:14)

HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS - IT HIT ME LIKE A HAMMER (EMI DPRO#04777)
1) Album Version - 3:59
2) Single Remix - 3:59
3) A/C Mix - 4:01
Comments: The Album Version contains an electric guitar interlude between 2:27-2:43 and from 3:43-3:59; the Single Remix (which is the 45 version) contains a saxaphone during these same time frames. Electric guitars are buried or eliminated altogether from the A/C (Adult Contemporary) mix. The A/C mix also doesn't possess the brightly EQ'd sound of the single and album versions.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:59) and includes an A/C mix that runs (4:01); commercial copies were all (3:59)

JENNIFER LOPEZ - IF YOU HAD MY LOVE (Work OSK41507)
1) Radio Edit - 3:46
2) Dark Child Remix - 4:00
3) Pablo Flores Remix - 3:55
4) LP Version - 4:24
Comments: The two remixes here, in my opinion, don't meet radio edit criteria.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contain edits that run (3:46) and (4:24)

MATCHBOX TWENTY - BENT (Atlantic PRCD300005)
1) Bent - 4:15
MATCHBOX TWENTY - BENT (Atlantic PRCD300005-2
1) Early Fade - 3:59
2) Album Version - 4:15
Comments: Two different promo CDs were issued for this single. The 45 and LP version run 4:15 and appears on Matchbox Twenty's Mad Season (Lava/Atlantic 83339) CD. The radio edit is on the Totally Hits 3 (Warner/Elektra/Atlantic/Arista 83412) various artist CD. These distinctions weren't noted in the 10th edition.
My conclusion: Some DJ copies of this single run (3:59) and (4:15); commercial copies were all (4:15)

RICHARD MARX - SATISFIED (EMI DPRO 04254)
1) Single Version - 3:58
2) LP Version - 4:12
3) AOR Mix - 4:12
Comments: Pat notes in the 10th edition that the "actual 45 time is 4:10 not 3:58 as stated on the record label". Curiously, the first track on this promo CD is listed as the "Single Version" and actually does clock in at 3:58 (the intro is edited compared to that of the LP Version and fades out :04 sooner). It may simply be that EMI originally planned to release the 3:58 version on commercial cassette and vinyl single formats but for whatever reason the 4:12 version was pressed instead and it was too late to change the printed run time on the label. As a result, the 3:58 edit wound up being serviced exclusively to radio stations. I suppose there's also a possibility that there might've been two pressings of this single, each with different run times. But until such evidence surfaces, I'll accept Pat's notations as accurate and the "Single Version" as it appears on this promo disc will be considered a radio edit, not the actual 45 version.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:58) and (4:12); actual run time of commercial copies were all (4:10), not (3:58) as stated on the label

RICHARD MARX - KEEP COMING BACK (Capitol DPRO-79957)
1) 12" Edit - 4:32
2) 3rd World Mix - 6:46
3) Quiet Storm Mix - 6:03
4) Album Version Edit - 4:47
Comments: The 12" Edit, 3rd World Mix, and Quiet Storm Mix are all very different mixes from the original. The Album Version Edit is the edit I've always heard on the radio. I don't have a commercial copy of the single, but I believe it runs the same as the LP version.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contain an edit that runs (4:47); commercial copies were all (6:49?)

MAXWELL - ASCENSION (DON'T EVER WONDER)
Comments: I have an edit of this single that runs 3:45 on one of my Promo Only: Mainstream Radio DJ subscription CDs. This is the exact same version that appears on The Classic Chillout Album (Epic 86337) various artist CD, though Pat comments in the 10th edition that this is "neither the 45 or LP version". I don't have a copy of "Ascension" on an official promo CD single release, but I came across one on the web with the following track listing and printed run times:

MAXWELL - ASCENSION (DON'T EVER WONDER) (Columbia CSK 8129)
1) CUT - 3:45
2) UNCUT - 5:46
3) UNSUNG - 5:46
The track called Cut seems to imply that it's an edit of the 45 and LP version. The added fact that the run time is listed at 3:45 makes me almost certain this is an official radio edit and is the same one that appears on my promo CD and on Epic 86337. But since I'm currently unable to confirm this, I'll refrain from making a definite conclusion at this time.

EDWIN MCCAIN - I'LL BE (Atlantic PRCD 8285)
1) Radio Edit - 4:03
2) Full Version - 4:25
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:03) and (4:25); commercial copies were all (4:25)

EDWIN MCCAIN - I COULD NOT ASK FOR MORE (Atlantic PRCD 8909)
1) RADIO MIX - 4:07
2) ALBUM VERSION - 4:34
Comments: This song was never released on a commercial single format, so there is no 45 version.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:07) and (4:34), not (4:00) and (4:38) as the label states

BRIAN MCKNIGHT - BACK AT ONE (Motown 1560)
1) RADIO VERSION - 3:42
2) LP VERSION - 4:21
Comments: The LP version can be found on Brian McKnight's Back at One (Motown 012153708) and From There to Here (Motown 440066114) CDs. The radio edit is on the Universal Smash Hits (Universal Records 012158299) various artist disc. These distinctions weren't noted in the 10th edition. "Back at One" was never released on a commercial single format, so there is no 45 version.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:42), not (3:24) as stated on the label, and (4:21)

SARAH MCLACHLAN - BUILDING A MYSTERY (Arista ASCD-3382)
1) Clean Version - 4:07
2) Album Version - 4:07
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contain a censored and uncensored version, both running (4:07); commercial copies all contain the uncensored version

MEN AT LARGE - SO ALONE (EastWest Records America PRCD 4861)
1) Edit - 3:57
2) Radio Version - 5:27
3) LP Version - 7:26
Comments: I don't have a commercial single copy of this song, but Joel Whitburn lists a run time of 3:50 in Pop Annual 1955-1999. Anyone know for sure?
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:57), (5:27), and (7:26); commercial copies were all (3:50?)

NATALIE MERCHANT - CARNIVAL (Elektra PRCD 9208-2)
1) single version - 4:01
2) CD version - 5:57
Comments: DJ copies of this single run (4:01), not (3:55) as stated on the label, and (5:57); commercial copies were all (5:57)

METALLICA - NOTHING ELSE MATTERS (Elektra PRCD 8534-2)
1) Album Version - 6:27
METALLICA - NOTHING ELSE MATTERS (Elektra PRCD 8534-2)

GEORGE MICHAEL - FREEDOM (Columbia CSK 73559)
1) ALBUM VERSION - 6:30
2) EDIT - 5:19

1) EDIT - 4:27
GEORGE MICHAEL/ELTON JOHN - DON'T LET THE SUN GO DOWN ON ME (Columbia CSK4287)

GEORGE MICHAEL & QUEEN - SOMEBODY TO LOVE (Hollywood PRCD-10323-2)
1) RADIO EDIT - 4:37
2) ALBUM VERSION - 5:16

1) SPECIAL RADIO EDIT - 4:14
GEORGE MICHAEL - JESUS TO A CHILD (DreamWorks PRO-CD-4786)
1) RADIO EDIT - 6:04
2) LP VERSION - 6:50
Comments: Two different promo CDs were issued for this single.
My conclusion: Some DJ copies of this single run (4:14), while others run (6:04) and (6:50); commercial copies were all (6:50)

MR. BIG - JUST TAKE MY HEART (Atlantic PRCD 4445-2)
1) Edit - 3:45
2) LP Version - 4:22
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:45) and (4:22); commercial copies were all (4:22)

MONICA - BEFORE YOU WALK OUT OF MY LIFE
Comments: The 45 and LP versions run 4:52. I have a radio edit of this song on my Promo Only: Mainstream Radio DJ subscription CDs that runs (3:54). I've not been able to locate an official promo CD single copy, but I'm pretty sure one exists. If anyone has one, please feel free to share.

I have a correction of sorts that needs to be inserted at this point regarding the song "Satisfied" by Richard Marx. In the 10th edition I state that the 45 of this song really runs (4:10) not (3:58) as stated on the record label. This much is true but what I failed to mention was that this 45 was a promo vinyl 45 not a commercial 45. As far as I know, the commercial 45 label states a time of (4:10) and really runs (4:10).

MILESTONE - I CARE 'BOUT YOU (LaFace LFPCD-4263)
1) Radio Edit - 4:20
2) Instrumental - 4:35
Comments: Alphabetically, this should've been included in my previous post, but I missed it due to an error I just caught in the book. If you look closely in the 10th edition, the lone CD appearance for I Care 'Bout You is on the O.S.T Soul Food (LaFace 26041) disc, but this CD title is mistakenly listed under the artist: ROBERT MILES. There is currently no printed artist listing in the book for MILESTONE, which of course is where "I Care 'Bout You" should be listed under.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contain an edit that runs (4:20); commercial copies were all (4:34)

98 DEGREES - INVISIBLE MAN (Motown 374632056-2)
1) RADIO EDIT - 3:53
2) ALBUM VERSION - 4:41
3) INSTRUMENTAL - 4:41
Comments: DJ copies of this single run (3:53) and (4:41); commercial copies were all (4:41)

’N SYNC – THIS I PROMISE YOU (Jive JDJ 42724-2)
1) Radio Edit - 4:24
Comments: This was never released on a commercial single format, so there is no 45 version.
Conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:24)

JOAN OSBORNE – ONE OF US (Mercury CDP 1480)
1) Edit - 4:17
2) Album - 5:19
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:17) and (5:19); commercial copies were all (5:19)

ROBERT PALMER – MERCY MERCY ME/I WANT YOU (THE ECOLOGY) (EMI DPRO#4714)
1) American Edit - 3:52
2) U.K. Edit - 4:51
3) Album Version - 5:56
Comments: Because the American Edit and U.K. Edit are both dirivatives of the LP Version, I believe they qualify as official radio edits. The 3:52 American Edit can be found on the Best of Both Worlds: The Robert Palmer Anthology (Hip-O/Island 314586688) CD. In the 10th edition, this 3:52 version is shown with the comment: (edited). It would probably be more accurate to rework the comment something like this: (this is the American radio edit).
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:52), (4:51), and (5:56); the (3:52) version is an American edit, while the (4:51) version is a U.K. edit; commercial copies were all (5:57)

1) FOR YOU - 4:08

REM - BANG AND BLAME (Warner Bros. PRO-CD-7271-R)
1) Edit - 4:26
2) Album Version - 4:49
Comments: The 4:49 version on this promo CD is actually the single version, not the Album Version as stated on the disc. LP version runs 5:29.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:26) and (4:49); commercial copies were all (4:49)

KANE ROBERTS - DOES ANYBODY REALLY FALL IN LOVE ANYMORE? (DGC PRO-CD-4219-2)
1) Edit - 4:05
2) LP Version - 4:23
Comments: I don't have a commercial copy of this single, but Joel Whitburn lists a run time of 4:13 in Pop Annual 1955-1999. This is probably not accurate, so does anyone have a copy they can check?
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:05) and (4:23), not (3:59) and (4:28) as the label states; commercial copies were all (4:13?)

ROBYN - DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT TAKES (RCA 64830)
1) Radio Edit - 3:31
2) LP Version - 3:40
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:31) and (3:40); commercial copies were all (3:40)

2) Album Version - 4:47
Comments: The radio edit appears on two CDs in the 10th edition: Batman Forever (Atlantic 82759) and Warner Brothers - 75 Years of Film Music (Rhino 75287).
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:36) and (4:47); commercial copies were all (4:46)

SHANICE – SAVING FOREVER FOR YOU (Giant PRO-CD-5745)
1) Radio Edit - 3:55
2) Album Version - 4:27
3) Instrumental - 4:26
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contain edits that run (3:55) and (4:27); commercial copies were all (4:27)

DUNCAN SHEIK - BARELY BREATHING (Atlantic PRCD 6725-2)
1) Radio Edit - 3:56
2) Album Version - 4:14
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:56) and (4:14); commercial copies were all (4:14)

Comments: As is consistent with all previous entries, the instrumental and A Capella versions won't be counted as radio edits.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contain edits that run (3:29) and (4:05); commercial copies were all (4:05)

THE SMITHEREENS - TOO MUCH PASSION (Capitol DPRO-79935)
1) EDIT - 3:55
2) LP VERSION - 4:35
Comments: I don't have a commercial single copy, but I believe it runs the same as the LP version. This will need to be verified though.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:55) and (4:35); commercial copies were all (4:35?)

SNAP - OOOPS UP! (Arista ASCD-2071)
1) RADIO REMIX - 4:01
2) ALBUM EDIT - 4:03
3) THE BURN RUBBER REMIX - 6:16
Comments: I can recall the Radio Remix being played on Top 40 radio, so I'm inclined to count this as an official radio edit. I don't remember hearing the Burn Rubber Remix on the airwaves. If it did get airplay, I don't think it was played enough to have a significant impact on the song's overall chart performance. Thus, I won't consider this a radio edit. I don't have a cassette or vinyl 45 copy of this single, so I don't know which version appears on it and how long it runs. Whitburn lists the single's run time at 4:19, but I doubt this is accurate. I'll use this time until someone can verify otherwise.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contain a radio remix that runs (4:01) and an edit that runs (4:03); commercial copies were all (4:19?)

hey todd......a minor correction..........regarding don henley's song "the heart of the matter" that was issued in 1990 on the geffen 19898 cassingle.....the cassingle states the "edit/remix" is on the "a" side of the cassingle...........but acctually the version that is on the cassingle is the "ac edit" that is on the promo cd single.......CONCLUSION: the "edit/remix" version that is on the promo cd single IS NOT the same as the "edit/remix" that is on the cassingle.........this might just be a mislabelling issue on the promo cd single and nothing more.....but, we do want to be as thorough as possible on this site........please make note..........edtop40

It's possible the Richard Marx "Satisfied" had more than one pressing with different versions. I know there were two different cassette singles for Mariah Carey's "Someday" -- one with the LP version, and one with the 4:40 "New 7" Jackswing" mix. No indication of a difference on the sleeve -- both had exactly the same catalog number and the exact same B-side.

edtop40:

Thanks very much for your clarifications regarding the Don Henley "Heart of the Matter" and Snap "Ooops Up!" entries. Like Pat D., I strive to be as accurate as possible with the information I post so I invite and encourage all board readers to jump in at any time and point out any errors or inaccuracies, even if they're small or minor.

By the way, it's great to be back on the board for the first time in over a month! I was very busy throughout the month of December with work, personal life, and the holidays. I now look forward to continuing to post more promo single info. In fact, I have a dozen new singles to report, so let's get right to it!...

SNOW - GIRL I'VE BEEN HURT (EastWest PRCD 5139)
1) Pop Radio Edit - 3:28
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:28); commercial copies were all (4:01)

SOUL ASYLUM - MISERY (Columbia CSK 7080)
1) edit - 3:58
2) album - 4:23
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:58) and (4:23); commercial copies were all (4:23)

SOULDECISION featuring THRUST - FADED (MCA 25010-2)
1) Radio Version - 3:29
2) No Rap Edit - 2:49
Comments: DJ and commercial copies of this single list the artist only as "soulDecision".
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single feature a "no rap" edit which runs (2:49) and a version with rap running (3:29); commercial copies were all (3:29) and include the rap; the radio version with rap, all commercial single copies, and some album pressings contain the lyric "I'm gonna take off all your clothes", while the "no rap" radio edit and other album pressings contain the cleaner alternate lyric "I'm gonna move in nice and close"

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - SECRET GARDEN
Comments: When "Secret Garden" was first released in 1995, the LP version was featured on all DJ and commercial single copies. The single was pretty much a chart flop. Two years later, a disc jockey at radio station KKRZ-FM in Portland created a new version of "Secret Garden" by adding bits of dialog from the movie Jerry Maguire throughout the song. This mix was circulated to other radio stations across the country and ultimately became a big Top 40 radio success. It's not clear if this "Jerry Maguire Mix" ever became an official radio promo release, but it does appear on my Promo Only: Mainstream Radio subscription series (run time is 4:26). The "Jerry Maguire Mix" has never been made commercially available on CD.
My conclusion: in 1995, this song was released on all DJ and commercial single copies in its LP version form but failed to crack a major Top 40 chart; a different version surfaced on Top 40 radio stations in 1997 where dialogue from the movie Jerry Maguire was interspersed throughout the song - this 1997 version is considered the true hit single version but has never appeared on a commercial compact disc release

SPICE GIRLS - GOODBYE (Virgin DPRO-13653)
1) Radio Edit - 4:12
2) Single Version - 4:44
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:12) and (4:44); commercial copies were all (4:44)

SUBWAY - THIS LIL' GAME WE PLAY (Biv Ten 374631244-2)
1) Pop Edit - 4:04
2) LP Version - 4:52
3) Radio Edit - 4:04
4) Instrumental - 4:59
Comments: The only difference between the Pop Edit and Radio Edit is the Radio Edit contains crooning vocals and spoken dialog during the :15 introduction, while the Pop Edit does not.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contains a "pop edit" and "radio edit" which both run (4:04), not (4:10) as listed on the label, and the commercial version which runs (4:52); commercial copies were all (4:52)

TEARS FOR FEARS - SOWING THE SEEDS OF LOVE (Fontana CDP 119)
1) Full Version - 6:47
2) U.S. Radio Edit - 4:02
Comments: The Full Version is not the same as the LP version, which runs 6:15.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:02) and (6:47); commercial copies were all (5:42)

TEARS FOR FEARS - WOMAN IN CHAINS (Fontana CDP 163)
1) Edit - 4:42
2) Single Version - 5:27
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:42) and (5:27); commercial copies were all (5:27)

TEARS FOR FEARS - BREAK IT DOWN AGAIN (Fontana CDP 953)
1) Edit - 3:51
2) LP Version - 4:31
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:51) and (4:31); commercial copies were all (4:30)

TONY TERRY - WITH YOU (Epic ESK 4073)
1) Radio Edit #1 - 3:57
2) Radio Edit #2 - 4:13
3) Album Version - 5:04
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:57), (4:13), and (5:04); commercial copies were all (5:04)

TESLA - SIGNS (Geffen PRO-CD-4178)
1) clean version - 3:09
Comments: Every CD appearance of this song to date is the LP version.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:09), not (3:15) as the label states; DJ and commercial single copies substitute the word "little" for the F-word at the 2:27 mark; the LP version is not censored

TQ - WESTSIDE (Clockwork/Epic ESK 41248)
1) Radio Version - 3:52
2) Instrumental - 5:07
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contain an edit that runs (3:52); commercial copies were all (5:02)

Todd, I just wanted to reply to a few of your recent posts. First, with regard to Snow "Girl I've Been Hurt", Whitburn lists the 45 version as running 3:53 and you are stating 4:01, so what gives here?

With regard to Souldecision "Faded", the Billboard chart which I have, listed the artist as Souldecision featuring Thrust but both your dj and commercial copies do not list Thrust?

Regarding an item you did not mention, Snow "Informer" --I have a dj copy that states "edit without the rap" running 3:37, so do you have either a dj or commercial single with the rap, since Whitburn lists the 45 time as (4:05)?

I have a DJ CD single of "Informer" (Eastwest Records America PRCD 4830-2) that has:

1. Edit (4:04)
2. Drum Mix Edit (4:07)
3. Clark's Super Radio Mix (4:12)

attn all.........regarding whitburns' book that has the run times of all songs......please note.......many, 50% or so of the cassingles run fast.......don't know if it's a manufacturing issue or and age issue (ie: the tape gets warped with age), but many cassingles run fast.......i've personally compared every top 40 song from the 90's that was originally issued on cassingle, versus the cd counterpart and they usually run quicker, thus whitburn would show a shorter run time in his book........between all of us, i think we run a more complete and conclusive site than he does.........let's all keep up the great work........

I don't think Whitburn times most of the singles himself, cassette or 45 -- I think he generally lists the running time that's on the label, unless someone corrects him.

Pat:

In a recent e-mail conversation with edtop40, he told me the "Girl I've Been Hurt" cassette single contains the "edit" version, but the label states no running
time. He claims that it runs 4:01. I do not have a copy of the cassette single and I probably should've made this disclaimer in my post (like I usually do), but edtop40's track record is superb and I'll sometimes contact him and go with his information whenever I'm in doubt.

As for whether the CD and promo singles of soulDecision's "Faded" contains a mention of rapper "Thrust" on the sleeve or label, I unfortunately am unable to refer to my copies because they are at my brother's house and he's out of town. I'm pretty positive though that neither the promo or commercial CD copy explicitly mention "Thrust", but I'll be sure to confirm this when I get my singles back.

Also, thanks Brian W. for the info on Snow's "Informer" DJ promo single.

I got my copies of "Faded" back recently and, upon closer review, they do indeed mention that the song features Thrust. I stand corrected. Thanks for the heads up, guys.

I'd say I have about two more posts worth of DJ edits to go. I'll do my best to post some info later tonight.

TYRESE - SWEET LADY (RCA 65735)
1) Top 40 Edit - 4:12
Comments: To my knowledge, there was never a commercial CD or cassette single released for this song. The LP version runs 4:50. Curiously, Joel Whitburn lists the run time at 4:12, which is the same run time as the promo CD single. I'm unable to verify if the radio edit appeared on the 12-inch vinyl single release, but that could be what Whitburn is using as his single run time. If this is the case, then it begs the question: Should the featured song on a commercial 12-inch vinyl single release count as a "45 version" if no CD or cassette single configuration was ever released? Maybe Pat or another reader can determine if the 4:12 version is a radio edit only or if it could be considered the 45 version as well.

UB40 - HERE I AM (COME AND TAKE ME) (Virgin PRCD 3671)
1) Radio Edit - 3:17
2) Crossover 7" - 3:53
3) 12" Mix - 4:32
Comments: The Radio Edit is the version I always remembered being played on Top 40 radio. I can't really recall ever hearing the Crossover 7" or 12" Mix. Since the latter two are both very different mixes, I'll decline considering them official radio edits.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contains an edit that runs (3:17); commercial copies were all (4:00)

U2 - DISCOTHEQUE (Island PRCD 7316-2)
1) Album Version - 5:08
2) Radio Edit - 4:36
Comments: Oh boy, here's another complicated entry. The LP version and the commercial maxi-CD single clocks "Discotheque" at 5:19. But the promo CD single has an "Album Version" running 5:08 and the "Radio Edit" at 4:36. My research indicates that the vinyl 7-inch promo single contains the 5:08 version as well, though I don't have a copy to verify. I also don't have the commercial cassette single, but my sources suggest that "Discotheque" runs 5:08 on it (even though Joel Whitburn lists the run time at 4:57, which I believe is wrong because I've never seen a 4:57 version of this song anywhere). If anyone can help me tie these loose ends, it would be appreciated.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (5:08) and (4:36); commercial copies run (5:08?) and (5:19)

LUTHER VANDROSS - HERE AND NOW (Epic ESK 1942)
1) 7" EDIT - 3:55
2) LP VERSION - 5:22
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:55) and (5:22); commercial copies were all (5:22)

VERVE - BITTERSWEET SYMPHONY (Virgin DPRO-12727)
1) Radio Edit - 4:16
2) Original Version - 5:57
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:16) and (5:57); commercial copies were all (5:57)

JAMIE WALTERS - HOLD ON
Comments: I have a radio edit of this song which runs 4:01 on one of my Promo Only: Mainstream Radio subscription CDs, but I've had a tough time finding an official promo CD single release for this song. I believe it was released by Atlantic records under catalog #PRCD 5598.

KARYN WHITE - THE WAY I FEEL ABOUT YOU (Warner Bros. PRO-CD-5135)
1) Edit - 4:08
2) Album Version - 4:33
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:08), not (4:00) as the label states, and (4:33); commercial copies were all (4:33)

VANESSA WILLIAMS AND BRIAN MCKNIGHT (Giant PRO-CD-5910)
1) Radio Edit - 4:01
2) Album Version - 4:45
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:01) and (4:45); commercial copies were all (4:44)

WINGER - MILES AWAY (Atlantic PRCD 3566-2)
1) Edit - 3:49
2) LP Version - 4:10
Comments: The radio edit appears on the various artist CD 1990 - #1 Radio Hits - 1994 (JCI 3197). All other domestic CD appearances appear to be the LP version.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:49) and (4:10); commercial copies were all (4:10)

XSCAPE - THE ARMS OF THE ONE WHO LOVES YOU (So So Def CSK4180)
1) Radio Edit - 4:13
2) LP Version - 4:20
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:13) and (4:20); commercial copies were all (4:20)

From the time I first started this message thread, I've picked up five additional promo CD single titles...

MARY J. BLIGE - NOT GON' CRY (Arista ASCD-2957)
1) radio edit - 4:19
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:19); commercial copies were all (4:55)

CANDLEBOX - FAR BEHIND (Maverick PRO-CD-6999-R)
1) Edit - 4:10
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:10); commercial copies were all (4:57)

MEAT LOAF - I'D LIE FOR YOU (AND THAT'S THE TRUTH) (MCA MCA5P-3548)
1) True Detective Edit - 4:50
2) Sweet Movie Edit - 4:19
3) Hot Car Girl Edit - 4:51
4) Undercover Edit - 4:21
5) Album Version - 6:37
Comments: Pay close attention because this can get confusing.... The first four tracks on this promo CD are all edits of the LP version. The True Detective Edit and the Hot Car Girl Edit are nearly identical, as are the Sweet Movie Edit and the Undercover Edit. The only differences between the True Detective Edit and the Hot Car Girl Edit are the latter edit has slightly brighter EQ during the song's softer passages and a slightly longer fade than the former. The same holds true for the Sweet Movie Edit and The Undercover Edit as the latter edit has slightly brighter EQ during the song's softer passages and a slightly longer fade than the former. Other than the one to two seconds discrepency in run times, it would be practically impossible to distinguish the difference between these two sets of edits without syncing them up and doing a real time A-B comparison. Thus, it almost seems like splitting hairs to list all four run times as separate radio edits given that tracks 1 and 3 and tracks 2 and 4 are pretty much identical. Nonetheless, I will list all four edit times separately in my conclusion and leave it up to Pat to decide if he wants to mention them all in future editions of his book.
My conclusion: DJ edits of this single run (4:19), (4:21), (4:50), (4:51), and (6:37); commercial copies were all (6:36)

NIIU - I MISS U (Arista ASCD-2817)
1) Remix Radio Edit - 3:53
2) Remix Album Version - 5:10
3) Spanish Version ("Te Extrano") - 3:53
Comments: The Spanish Version will not be considered a Top 40 radio edit.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contains edits that run (3:53) and (5:10); commercial copies were all (3:59)

P.M. DAWN - LOOKING THROUGH PATIENT EYES (Gee Street PRCD 6765-2)
1) RADIO MIX - 4:06
2) ALBUM VERSION - 4:06
3) EXTENDED MIX - 6:18
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single feature a radio remix that runs (4:06); the commercial version which also runs (4:06); and an extended mix running (6:18); DJ copies incorrectly list the commercial version run time at (4:25)

Well, that's all she wrote! This concludes my listing of approximately 127 radio promo CD singles that contain information not found in the 10th edition. I will continue to post updates and info on other promo discs as I come across them.

Todd, with regard to your question regarding a commercial 45 of Tyrese's "Sweet Lady" I pulled out the old Billboard Top 100 chart which says this was an LP cut so I think the radio edit version you have on cd is exactly that and that there was no commercial vinyl or cassette single.

Todd, just wondering if your cd single of "I Miss You" really states "I Miss U" as you posted above. The Billboard charts spell out the word "you" and the full length cd spells out "you". Also, I have never been able to figure out if the group name has spaces between the letters (NIIU vs N II U) The spine of the full length cd seems to indicate there are spaces but this is definitely open for interpretation. What does your cd single indicate?

Pat:

You are absolutely right about the correct title being "I Miss You", not "I Miss U". Because the group's name is NIIU, with a "U" and not "You" spelled out, it appears that I subconciously typed the letter "U" to replace "You" in the song title as well by mistake!

As for how the spacing works within the group's name, there doesn't seem to be a consensus among my sources. Joel Whitburn prints the name as "NIIU" in several of his books, but my promo single has it spaced out as "N II U" on the spine. Personally, I think the latter looks more easily readable. Anyone remember how it appeared on the Billboard charts?

Todd, regarding U2 "Discotheque," my US commercial 2-track CD single (I think you said you have the maxi single) runs 5:08. Doesn't specify a version. It's coupled with "Holy Joe" (Garage Mix - 4:21). So I think it's fairly safe to say the single version runs 5:08.

I've acquired a few more promo CD singles recently. As always, I'll type out the track listing, actual run times, and my commentary.

3RD BASS - POP GOES THE WEASEL (Def Jam/Columbia CSK 73728)
1) RADIO EDIT - 3:47
2) LP VERSION - 3:52
3) INSTRUMENTAL - 3:57
Comments: The Radio Edit intro and LP version intro is different. I don't have a commercial single copy, so I don't know which version is considered the single version.
Conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (3:47) and (3:52)

RALPH TRESVANT - STONE COLD GENTLEMAN (MCA CD45-1310)
1) Single Edit With Rap - 4:18
2) Single Edit Without Rap - 4:28
3) LP Version - 5:15
Comments: The Single Edit With Rap is the commercial single version.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:18), (4:28), and (5:15), though the latter time is shown as (5:02) on the label; commercial copies are all (4:18)

HI-FIVE - I CAN'T WAIT ANOTHER MINUTE (Jive JDJ-42012-2)
1) Edit - 4:41
2) No talk edit - 4:41
3) Live version - 5:22
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contain an "Edit" and a "No talk edit" which both run (4:41), even though the label states a run time of (4:35) for the "Edit" version; commercial copies are all (4:59)

Here's a bit of info about "Pop Goes The Weasel." I have the commercial copy, which contains the LP Version (track 1 @ 3:53) and Radio Edit (track 2 @ 3:47). On my single, not only is the intro edited differently, but the chorus has completely different samples. The Radio Edit uses the sample from "Sledgehammer" but the LP Version has something else.

Is this the same as the promo single that you have, Todd? Although I no longer have the full-length CD of "Derelicts Of Dialect," it seems to me that both versions (the LP and Radio Edit) were on the CD and they were the same except that the intro was edited on the Radio Edit. When I picked up this copy of the commercial single, I noticed right away the "LP Version" on there sounded different than I had remembered.

Aaron:

The LP Version of "Pop Goes the Weasel" on the promo CD single samples the underlying guitar riff of "Sledgehammer" throughout much of the song just like the Radio Edit. Yet, as you astutely point out, the chorus on the LP Version does indeed feature a different brass section sample than the Radio Edit.

I just listened to the true "LP Version" from the "Derelicts Of Dialect" CD, and as I suspected, it is NOT the same as the LP Version on the commercial single and, as Todd pointed out, the promo single. The LP Version on the full-length CD is exactly the same as the Radio Edit on the singles, EXCEPT the intro has the "Pop Goes The Weasel" harmonica snippet right after the line "let's all sing Pop Goes The Weasel."

I have information to report on a few more DJ CD singles:

COOLIO FEATURING 40 THEVZ - C U WHEN U GET THERE (Tommy Boy TBCD 406)
1) RADIO EDIT - 2:56
Comments: The radio edit of this song is an edit of the "Bill & Humberto's Orchestra Mix", which was issued in its full length as the B-side/backup track on all commercial single copies.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (2:56), not (3:05) as stated on the label; commercial copies are all (5:06)

SHAWN MULLINS - LULLABY (Columbia CSK 41499)
1) Single Version - 4:32
2) Single Edit - 4:13
3) Album Version - 5:28
Comments: This song was only made available as a commercial single on vinyl 45. I don't have a copy so I can't report how long it runs.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:32), (4:13), and (5:28)

SAVAGE GARDEN - TO THE MOON AND BACK (Columbia CSK 0560)
1) Long edit - 4:32
2) Short edit - 4:13
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:32) and (4:13); commercial copies are all (4:32)

I finally came across a copy of what appears to be a promo CD single release of the 3:59 "rapless" radio edit of BLACKstreet's "No Diggity". It is currently up for auction on eBay. I e-mailed the seller to see if he could tell me the disc's catalog number and he responded as follows:

"To me, this looks like one of the very first cd's they put together as it was not mass produced. It says "copyright 1996 Interscope Records" on it, but the cd label is obviously one that was computer generated. Looks to me like it is an original, probably from their own studio. My son produces cds for local bands and this looks just like the type of thing they put together.....might be collectible???

Hope that helps.
"

Judging by the accompanying photo, this looks like a very generically assembled CD single. If not for the seller's "copyright 1996 Interscope Records" notation, I would be inclined to believe this is just a CD-R copy. Very odd! You can view the promo CD at the following web address:

Comments: I don't have a commercial copy of this single, but Joel Whitburn lists a run time of 4:13 in Pop Annual 1955-1999. This is probably not accurate, so does anyone have a copy they can check?
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:05) and (4:23), not (3:59) and (4:28) as the label states; commercial copies were all (4:13?)

With much appreciated help from Edtop40, it's been determined that commercial single copies of "Does Anybody Really Fall in Love Anymore?" run 4:21 despite the cassette single sleeve stating "LP version" with a printed run time of 4:28. Thus, the above conclusion can be revised as follows:

My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:05) and (4:23), not (3:59) and (4:28) as the label states; commercial copies were all (4:21), not (4:28) as stated on the label.

Earlier in this thread, Todd posted info about Cinderella - Don't Know What You Got, stating that the promo single and cassette single have an actual running time of (5:21). I have this song from TM's library, and I'm guessing they goofed, because their version has an actual running time of (5:11).

Their version is simply the LP Version with an early fade. So, my question is, does the 45 version contain any edits or is this also an early fade of the LP Version? The book states "version" rather than "length," which leads me to believe there are edits within the song.

Aaron, here is the comment that will appear in the next edition of the book:

dj copies of this cd single stated times of (4:58) and (5:56) but actually contained only one version which ran (5:18); commercial copies were all (5:18) even though the label incorrectly states (4:58)

And the 45 is just an early fade of the LP so all the appearances to date have been LP length.

Bell Biv Devoe - Poison - The DJ CD single (MCA 18218) has two versions. Track 1 is the "No Ho Version," which censors the word "ho" in two places in the song; track 2 is the 7" Version, which to my ears sounds exactly like the LP version.

Bell Biv Devoe - Do Me! - The DJ CD single (MCA 18382) has four versions, with the lead track being the "Radio Mentality" version. If my memory serves me right, the video for this song starts off with the intro from the LP version, and then it cuts to an edited version of the "Radio Mentality" mix. (If you remember the video, you'll remember that the song ends with the lyrics "hip hop smoothed out on the r&b tip with a pop feel appeal to it" which is not part of the LP version.) To my knowledge, this promo single is the only appearance of this version on CD. The run time is (5:16). I'm guessing that another promo single was issued for the song, containing the LP version, since that's the mix I remember hearing on the radio.

Wreckx-N-Effect - Rump Shaker - I remember buying the full-length cassette tape after seeing the video (and what a video it was), and I was sorely disappointed that the LP version is far inferior to the mix used on the video. For years, I tried finding a CD with this version, and I finally discovered that it is on the US promo single and several import singles. The mix is called "Teddy 2" and it runs 6:00, although the video faded the song around the 3:40 mark.

Aaron:

What are the actual run times for the two tracks on the Bell Biv DeVoe "Poison" promo CD? I know they're based on the 7" version but the times on promo copies don't always match up exactly with the commercial single or album versions.

Actual run time for both tracks on the "Poison" promo single is (4:22), although the printed run time is (4:25) for each track.

Care for some oldies (pre-1980s) examples?

All righty then.

BAND ON THE RUN-Wings. This 1974 #1 was in a 3:50 DJ romo. I recall an even SHORTER version though at first, cutting the last several chords (the ones that the lyrics ".....like you-ou-hoo...ma-ma...you-hoo-hoo-hoo..ma-mma-=yooo"..are sung to ) are edited, then straight to the first section ("Stuck inside these 4 wallsa") with the aboivequoted lines, then CUTTING straight to tyhe BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM intro of the song PROPER (nop middle "If ever ever get outta here"..) which I DID stumble on a few weeks later!

Then as it was rising a Pual mcCartney interview finally showcased the 5:13 version (KHJ AM 930/Los Angeles)

1970. Sugarloaf. GREEN EYED LADY. Time: 6:48-cut to 5:58 for the ORIGINAL single while first release, and to a 2:58 promo but to 3:33 when it finally hit (the repetitious near ten chiords opening repeated three times pared down to one, then a few more parts in the slow part of this intro, then a few parts in the intro, also cut down, including a huge chucnk out of the organ then gee-tar solos..then another small slower part then a fade on the 3:33 single)...

Care for another example from 1970? Okay..ARE YOU READY Pacfiic Gas and Elecvtric. 5:51, cut to 2:40 (the slow inro one-time only tune verse, then another chorus and different tuen verse edited and a few more choruses delted>) The album and commercial times are the same. (Interesting. The later releases on Columbia Hall of Fame (tm) list 2:40 but is the FULL FIVE MINUTE FIFTY ONE SECODN VERSION.)

:):)

COME AND GET YOUR LOVE by Redbone form 1973-74. Epic edited parts for the Dj versi9on>There is a longer version too.

And from 1969, 5th Dimension AUAQRIUS/LET THE SUNSHINE from the Broadway Musical, HAIR, 4:49 on the single but edited with the second verse and chorus from AX and a few of LtSI's choruses (nothing else than those chrouses!) edited out. Some different versions, one 3:07 and another 3:55 I think, exist. I always thought that THAT was the HIT version!

CHER - HEART OF STONE (Geffen PRO-CD-3989)
1) Remix/Fade - 3:50
2) Remix - 4:09
3) CHR Version - 3:50
4) LP Version - 4:15
CHER - HEART OF STONE (Geffen PRO-CD-3822)
1) CHR Version - 3:50
CHER - HEART OF STONE (Geffen PRO-CD-4005)
1) Heartbeat Version Faded
2) Full Heartbeat Version
Comment: There is a grand total of three promo CDs available for this song. I don't have the disc containing the Heartbeat versions (PRO-CD-4005), which is why there are no run times listed beside those tracks. I believe the 45 version run time is 3:50, but regretably I don't have a commercial single copy to verify which version of the song appears on it. I'll hold off on making a definitive conclusion until I can fill in these gaps of missing info. As always, any and all input is welcome!

I think it is time to revisit Todd's comments above regarding "Heart Of Stone by Cher. First, I don't hear any difference between the CHR mix (3:50) and the LP version so if someone can step up to the plate and point out the differences that would be great. The cassette single which runs (3:50), and to my ears is just an early fade of the LP (4:15), is not the same as the vinyl single which is a remix called the "heartbeat version/faded".

Pat:

I just now conducted an A/B comparison of the "Heart of Stone" CHR version and LP version on my digital audio software and I agree with your observation that the CHR is just an early fade of the LP.

Over the past several months, I've acquired some more promo CD singles containing radio edits not noted in the database...

BLESSID UNION OF SOULS - LET ME BE THE ONE (EMI DPRO-19818)
1) Radio version - 3:52
2) Radio version (extended) - 4:03
3) Q102 edit - 3:52
4) Alternative radio version - 3:45
Comments: The Alternative radio version is a remix. The Radio version and Q102 edit are exactly the same except the Q102 edit contains additional background vocal overdubs from the :44 to :57 mark.
My conclusion: DJ CD copies of this single run (3:52), (4:03), and (3:45); commercial copies are all (3:53)

THE BOYS - CRAZY (Motown PRD-90007)
1) Radio edit - 4:02
2) 12" Mix - 6:47
3) Radio mix w/rap - 4:15
4) Dub mix - 5:16
5) Instrumental - 4:00
Comments: Tracks 4 and 5 are both instrumentals and therefore I don't count them as official Top 40 radio edits.
My conclusion: DJ CD copies of this single contain versions running (4:02), (6:47), not (6:07) as stated on the label, and (4:15); commercial copies are all (4:02)

CATHY DENNIS - YOU LIED TO ME (Polydor CDP741)
1) Radio Edit - 3:37
2) Spayed with Edited Attitude - 4:07
3) You Lied to Me - 5:25
Comments: I don't recall ever hearing the "Spayed with Edited Attitude" version on my local Top 40 stations, so I'll leave it up to Pat to decide whether to make a note of this version on the database.
My conclusion: DJ CD copies of this single contain versions running (3:37) and (5:25); commercial copies are all (3:38)

EXPOSE - I WISH THE PHONE WOULD RING (Arista ASCD-2466)
1) SINGLE VERSION - 3:51
2) ALBUM VERSION - 4:06
My conclusion: DJ CD copies of this single run (3:51) and (4:06); commercial copies are all (4:06)

GOO GOO DOLLS - NAME (Warner Bros. PRO-CD-7805-R)
1) Edit - 4:02
My conclusion: DJ CD copies of this single run (4:02); commercial copies are all (4:29)

* Thanks to Edtop40 for assisting me with the commercial single run times.

TEVIN CAMPBELL - I'M READY (Qwest/Warner Bros. PRO-CD-6698)
1) Edit - 4:10
2) Album Version - 4:44
My conclusion: DJ CD copies of this single run (4:10) and (4:44); commercial copies run (4:45)

PAULA ABDUL - COLD HEARTED (Virgin PRCD2776)
1) Cold Hearted - 3:34 [this is the 45 version]
2) Cold Hearted (remix) - 3:29

I received this today from Esprit in the UK. It's notable for containing a remix I hadn't even known existed.

It's simply called Remix, runs an actual 3:29, and is similar to the single version, but with a more open, less dense-sounding mix and some extra electric guitar overdubs, particularly on the intro. It is not the same remix/edit that was later issued on import CD singles when her "Shut Up and Dance" album came out.

I paid about $27 for it, and it was factory sealed. No PS, just an empty jewel case. The disc is silkscreened with a red pattern.

The "Teddy 2" mix of "Rump Shaker" you refer to was indeed released on the commercial vinyl 12" and runs exactly 6:00 as you mentioned. That mix features a sample of The Emotions 1973 single "Blind Alley" which has been sampled a number of times on pop, r&b, and rap hits. Most notably on Mariah Carey's "Dreamlover". MCA also issued a promo only 12"(not sure if they also did on promo CD) that has additional mixes of the song.

This is the track listing for that promo with the catalog number MCA8P 2220.

Side One

Radio Mix 3:56
Teddy 2 6:00
Dub 6:00

Side Two

Radio Remix 4:34
Bonus Beats 5:55
Percapella 3:19

Good info, Jeff. I recently acquired the promo CD single (MCA 2221), and it has the exact same mixes, but with a slightly different order:

Radio Mix
Radio Remix
Teddy 2
Dub
Bonus Beats
Percapella

Pat:

Lately, I notice you've been increasingly adding to the database specific names of versions and edits stated on commercial and DJ single copies. For example, the database now notes for Janet Jackson's "Any Place Any Time" that the cassette single contains the "R. Kelly mix" and runs (5:12). As a reader and collector, I'm finding this to be very helpful information.

That said, I'd like to revisit Cher's "Heart of Stone" because, as indicated by the quoted portion of my previous post above, I noted in perhaps oversimplified fashion that DJ copies run (3:50), (4:01), (4:09), (4:15) and (4:16). But given that these run times each represent a different version and mix, I'm now thinking it would be better to state which specific version of the song each run time represents. Therefore, I was thinking the notes in the database regarding "Heart of Stone" could be revised something like this:

DJ copies of this single run (3:50) the "Remix/Fade"; (3:50) the "CHR Version" (4:01) the "Heartbeat Version Faded"; (4:09) the "Remix"; (4:15) the "LP Version"; and (4:16) the "Full Heartbeat Version"; vinyl 45 commercial copies were all the "Heartbeat" remix running (4:01) while the cassette single was not a remix, just an early fade of the LP and ran (3:50)

For what it's worth, Pat, I hope I'm not coming across to you as pushy or sound like I'm trying to dictate how you should run your database. I share your passion for accuracy and thoroughness regarding Top 40 music and am just simply offering some friendly suggestions that might help make the database as comprehensive as possible for your readers and subscribers.

Pat:

One more thing that might also be worth noting for Cher's "Heart of Stone"... The CHR Version running 4:01 on promo single copies is just an early fade of the LP length. Or, put another way, the CHR Version runs :11 longer than the cassette single length.

Mercy!

Here's another entry from earlier in this thread I'd like to re-visit:

2) Sweet Movie Edit - 4:19
3) Hot Car Girl Edit - 4:51
4) Undercover Edit - 4:21
5) Album Version - 6:37

My conclusion: DJ edits of this single run (4:19), (4:21), (4:50), (4:51), and (6:37); commercial copies were all (6:36)

For the same reasons I documented with Cher's "Heart of Stone" two posted messages ago, I'd like to propose the comments for Meat Loaf's "I'd Lie for You (and That's the Truth)" be modified in the database as follows:

DJ copies of this single run (4:50) the "True Detective Edit"; (4:19) the "Sweet Movie Edit"; (4:51) the "Hot Car Girl Edit"; (4:21) the "Undercover Edit"; and (6:37) the "Album Version"; other than slight EQ and fade differences, the "True Detective Edit" and the "Hot Car Girl Edit" are essentially identical to each other, as is also the case with the "Sweet Movie Edit" and the "Undercover Edit"; commercial copies are all (6:36)

You might be able to word this a little better, Pat.

Re: THE SMITHEREENS - TOO MUCH PASSION (Capitol DPRO-79935)
1) EDIT - 3:55
2) LP VERSION - 4:35
Comments: I don't have a commercial single copy, but I believe it runs the same as the LP version. This will need to be verified though.

Has it ever been determined if commercial singles of "Too Much Passion" run 4:35?

Is the 'edit' actually an edit? I have the edit and the LP
copy and the notation in my files is that the edit is just
an early fade of the LP.
