My commercial 45 for this, which is stereo, has a listed time of (4:35), but an actual time of (4:38).

According to a Facebook post from my
friend Joe Nelson, the 45 and lp mixes of
this are different. His comments:

"The mix on this is different from the
album. The hi-hat is almost inaudible on
the entry from the line "on such a
timeless flight", potting up gradually
into the chorus. It's up full from the
beginning on the album. I'm not sure where
the single mix has appeared on CD, if
anywhere."

So, has the true single version shown up
on CD anywhere?

I would love to know if the 'single mix' has made it to a
CD too. Otherwise, I'll have to hunt down a 45.

Tom,

Here is a link to a 45 playing with the hi-hat audible.

I hear no difference in the hi-hat between the Youtube
video and the common stereo version.

One odd thing though is the poster says his 45 is stereo
but his video is mono. Since the surface noise is mono too
he either posted one channel or folded it to mono.

To me, the hi-hat is definitely quieter on
the video of the 45... not inaudible, but
definitely quieter until it gets to the
chorus.

I pulled a stock copy of this for comparison. I can
confirm the stock 45 is identical to the album.

Tom, the EQ in that mono video has muted highs and is
very bass heavy. That makes the hi-hats seem lower but
they really aren't. Note that they also start at full
volume and stay that way. What Joe Nelson is describing
is "potting up gradually." This doesn't happen in the 45
or LP.
I thought maybe what he heard was a mono promo mix but
according to Discogs this promo was stereo with same B-
side as the stock 45.

I can confirm that the stereo DJ is the same mix as the album too. Also, as far as I can tell, except for the "Superior Sound of Elton
John" import, all transfers to CD that I have heard contain the same tape defect at 1:28, which is also heard on the DJ 45. Although for
the "Diamonds" release, it sounds like they smoothed that defect out a bit.
