A while back, I posted that all commercial 45s for this ran (4:46). As of tonight, I now know this to be incorrect, as I have just acquired a listed and actual (4:13) commercial copy. Deadwax is "ST - A - 25765 - 3."

Jim, Is this 4:13 version an early fade or an edit?

Gordon, it is an early fade, and the same as the (4:13) promo 45 version I own.

I remember buying the 45 which was the full version only to find my neighbor had purchased the edit you mention.
This forum is such a great resource.
Keep up the great work!

Trying to recreate the 4:13 edit, but not having a 45 to go by, where does the fade starts and ends...

If I'm not mistaken, there was an edit in the instrumental bridge right after the acapella intro too.

I always thought it simply faded out early.
I know I haven't heard it since 1973 so the memory maybe a bit foggy.
That's also how it was played on American Top 40.
But there were always edits of songs to make up for the
three hour show.

A promo 45 I ordered came in today. Listed is 4:13, but this one fades rather quickly at 4:11...ST-4-25765-8.

I heard both versions on the same radio station in 1973, come to think of it.

First pressings were the edit version. Later pressings substituted the LP length version. The later pressings were also cut at reduced volume so tended towards noisy.

my commercial 45 issued as atlantic 2940 states the run time as 4:46 and does indeed run that length.....the etching on the run-out groove is "st-a-z5765-16 pp cdk"

double post....

so, do we know if the 4:13 dj version is a quick fade or an
edit?

There are not any edits in the song. It's a long, drawn out fade on the promo 45 found on YouTube, posted by HitsTownUSA. The fade is 22 seconds long, and the song runs about 0.6% slower than the 4:46 version on the "Best Of" CD I have.
