A member from the Both Sides Now message board (bsnpubs.com - an great website for stereo oldies fans) claims the version of Aaron Neville's "Tell It Like it Is", as it appears on the new CD release Rock & Roll: The First 50 Years - The Mid 60's (Varese 066614) sounds like it plays at the wrong speed. The poster points out that the original 1966 Par-Lo single has a run time of 2:41, according to music chart authority Joel Whitburn, yet the version on the Varese disc is only 2:27.
Does this faster version reflect the original 45 speed of "Tell It Like It Is", or is it perhaps the result of an engineering error? Can anyone shed some light on this?

Todd,
The Mono "hit" mix I have on CD times at 2:43. The Stereo mix [dubbed from an LP] on the Varese disc, Then 2 - Totally Oldies times at 2:44. I have not, as yet, picked up the Varese disc since I have every track, many times over.

Bob:
Thanks for confirming that the hit version of "Tell It Like It Is" runs 2:43. Given Varese's very good track record at making sure they use the correct version of hit singles, I wonder what happened in this case with Aaron Neville on the First 50 Years disc. Was a rare mistake made during the remastering process? Or is this a different version altogether?

Todd,
I suspect it is faded early. The only tape source for this track is the Mono master. The Stereo mix has been either lost or misplaced hence the disc dub by the folks at Varese...
