all right, can anybody clue us in on the mysterious LP pressing that does not have the hit single... i have both the gun hill road lp from 1973 and the original kama sutra 45... where is this clandestine pressing of "back when my hair was short"?

I own the album pressing with the "drug" lyrics of BWMHWS.
What questions would you like me to answer?

Hi All.
There were two completely different versions of BWMHWS. The original was on their 2nd album, which was produced by Kenny Rogers (yep, that one), and featured the drug lyric. This 1972 album went nowhere. A bit later they happened to be playing at the Bitter End in NYC when the owner or a label exec told them that BWMHWS could be a hit if they cleaned up the lyrics and played it with a faster tempo. They did that, wth Kenny Kerner producing this time around, and released it as a single. They also re-recorded a good portion of the album as well, and re-released it in 1973 (same year as the "new" single) with the same label # as the original album.
I actually have an audio interview with one of the group members who explains all this.. I'll post it somewhere when I get home tonight. I'll provide you with the times of both versions as well.

I uploaded both versions plus the interview at http://www.techsupporters.com/GHR/
Sorry, i couldn't provide actual times, as my turntable is not hooked up at the moment. Also, I was unable to find my 1973 album (the updated one) although it might turn up tonight.

hey tom... thanks for the "druggie" version of this song, and you know after i listened to it, i realized that i did hear this back in '72. albeit for a short time...it was the "cleaned up" version i recall more fondly, as i was entering the age of long hair, beer parties and smoking dope all night... ahh, the memories...

A third recording with yet another set of lyrics serves
as the hit 1973 (#40) version..
"Back when my hair short,,./
I was a white socked sport"
(just like the two previous album recordings)
"Holding(?) shoes and pegged pants/
Drank till my eyes were red"..
only the beginning...:)
At the end, the LP lyrics with the first several lrics
the n the slightly cleaned up "Holding beer parties till
ten/college appleaed to" fade the 1973 hit single.
------------- You know you're really older when you think that younger singer Jesse McCartney's related in anyway to former Beatle Paul McCartney.
