Has the original recording of Jimmy Dean's I.O.U. showed up on any CD yet, maybe an import? There's numerous listings for it on AllMusic.com, but only two of those are listed in the book, and they're rerecordings:

| An excellent question. "I.O.U" was originally released on a small independent label called Casino, but I have no idea who would own the master tapes now. Do tapes even still exist for this song, I wonder? |

FOUND IT!!! I found the original version of "I.O.U." -- on a domestic commercial CD, too, albeit one that's long out of print. But I found mine on Ebay for $6.99 the same day I started looking, so they're out there.
It's on the Jimmy Dean CD "24 Greats," copyright 1987 Highland Music Inc., UPC 0 12676 78602 7. The spine lists the company as Deluxe, DCD-7860. I did buy the Casino 45 to verify, and A/B'd them by getting them in sync on my PC. This absolutely is the original version, though the CD has the stereo album mix, while the 45 was mono. But it sounds to me like the 45 is just a fold-down of the stereo album version. And the 45 does run a hair faster -- 5:59 verses 5:56. It's a bit hissy, but it's definitely from tape, not a needle drop. (Strangely, when you fold it to mono, it reduces the hiss.) I had gone to All Music Guide to listen to all the audio samples of the song on all the different compilations, and I found one that sounded like it was a different recording from the rest. But I didn't own the 45, so I didn't know what I was listening for. So I came up with a strategy -- I did a search for the OTHER songs from his "IOU" album, which everyone told me had never been issued on CD. Ta-da! At least seven of the eleven songs from that album were on this CD and this CD alone, so I figured it was a pretty good bet they weren't re-recordings. So we can cross another one off the "never been on a full-length domestic CD" list! The songs from the IOU album that are on this CD are: Frilly Shirt Waking Up to Love Sleeping Beauty That New Old Fashioned Love This Ole House I Didn't Have Time I.O.U. ...and probably "Let Me Sing My Song"... there's a song on the original called "I Gotta Sing My Song for You," which appears to be the same song... espcially since it starts out, "Well, I'm back," which was the promotional slogan for the album. (This makes me wonder if more of the original album's songs are there, and some of them retitled.) The 45's B-side and album track, "Let's Pick Up the Pieces," is not included on this CD. NOTE: In listening further to the CD, some of the tracks are obvious needle drops, but all the tracks from the "IOU" album are from tape. Most of the tracks taken from vinyl appear to be from his 1968 RCA album "A Thing Called Love." |

| There is a short promo version of "I.O.U." with the 5:59 "Complete Version" on the flip side. The catalog number is GRT-052 on Casino Records. The listed time for the "Edited Version" is 4:00, but it runs 4:01. I almost fell asleep while timing it. |

my commercial 45 issued as casino 052 states no running
time on the label (it really says Time: Not Enough) but actually runs 5:58....the db says the 45 runs 5:56...my run out groove info is 'masterfonics' then GRT-050 with lines through it and then '(4340)'....this new 45 run time info s/b added to the db...thanks, brian for providing the track for my analysis.... ------------- edtop40 |

Deadwax on that side is GRT-052-A-Short and "Masterfonics". Although both sides are listed as Stereo, it is mono. |

I have a Canadian GRT 45 and it runs (5:58) like Ed's U.S. Casino 45. The label of the Canadian 45 states "Produced by Casino Records for GRT Corp." GRT Corp was an American tape manufacturer whose Canadian subsidiary started a record label that became quite succesful with artists like Ian Thomas and Prism. (Although each had only one Top 40 hit in the US, Ian Thomas had eight Top 40 hits in Canada and Prism had six, although not all on GRT.) As far as I know, GRT never started a label in the United States. As an example of how elusive the hit version has been, the Eric 45 in print in the 1980s has a re-recording. Jimmy Dean re-recorded this 'song' at least twice, eventhough he stopped performing it after the death of his mother. |

Paul, GRT did release 45s for a time in the U.S. The label had two "spurts
of U.S. activity" between 1969 to 1971, and then again from 1975 to 1977. In its first incarnation, local CT radio played these GRT 45s: -The Mojo--I Can't Let Go (GRT 5, 5/69) -Edwards Hand--If I Thought You'd Ever Change Your Mind (GRT 13, 9/69) -Saint Jacques--Rubies (GRT 25, 10/70) -Podipto--Karen's Song (GRT 36, 3/71) And these U.S. GRT 45s charted on the U.S. Hot 100 between 1975-1977: -Freddy Fender--Since I Met You Baby (GRT 031, 11/75) -Shirley & Squirrely--Hey Shirley (This Is Squirrely) (GRT 054, 9/76) -Meri Wilson--Telephone Man (GRT 127, 8/77) (The last one even made Pat's db!) |

And in Canada, Dan Hill's LP, "Longer Fuse" was released on
GRT of Canada. And his biggest hit "Sometimes When We Touch" is on that LP. The master tapes for the Jimmy Dean "I.O.U. single and LP are owned by GML, Inc. Which you know as King, Gusto, Highland, and other labels. So owned by Moe Lytell. ------------- I turn up the good and turn down the bad! |

It's curious that the GML-owned master so seldom turns up, since just about everything else they own is readily available. (It's also curious they would own the hit version of this song, since numerous country artists have re-recorded their hits for Gusto/Starday.) I purchased the hit version on iTunes in 2006 from an album called "Country Masters: Jimmy Dean". It's in stereo with pretty bad sound quality and very, very hissy. (It sounds like it may well have been mastered from a cassette of the 'IOU' album.) The copyright line read: "(p) 2005 Digital Musicworks International". I just checked to see whether it's still available, and although the album is still on iTunes, it is now described as a 'partial album' with only eight tracks and "I.O.U." is not one of them. Perhaps its availability in 2006 was 'unauthorized'. |

Digital Musicworks International seems to turn up when I look for lost Diamond Records masters as well.... almost always from scratchy disc dubs but a few first time stereo cuts have turned up so who knows where they are getting their music from... There is a high likelihood that GRT only distributed Casino
Records nationally. Which might well explain the GML, Inc purchase of the "I.O.U." master tapes. GML, Inc purchased many a small label which went under. Country labels especially so. ------------- I turn up the good and turn down the bad! |

I was recently asked about the promo 45 "Edited Version," which is a new "mix" rather than an edit.
