My promo 45 for this has a listed (3:46), actual (3:57) version on one side, which features a chopped intro. The other side features a listed (4:29), actual (4:35) version. This timing info closely parallels Pat's current notation for the commercial 45 issue of this song.

I'd like to recreate the 3:57 version but I need some assistance, please. Jim, do you (or anyone else) have specific edit points handy for shortening the intro? Presumably the remainder of the song is the same as the commercial 45?

Duane, I already have a spot-on accurate wav file of the DJ 45 short v, and I
will shoot it out to you shortly.

Early fade too.

Steve, (Hykker), was kind enough to send me a dub of his
promo 45. Besides removing the first 8 seconds off the
intro, there are 2 edits towards the end.
To get the full 3:58 length after the edits, the best
sources to use are the the ones that run 4:38 or so
before the edits.

Is one of the edits in the instrumental bridge? I seem to recall hearing
a version with a shorter bridge back when the song was out.

I really like the sound on the 1996 Greatest Hits CD. It's my go-to disc for most TT tracks, including "Doctor Doctor".
Here are instructions for creating the promo 45 edit from the LP/45 version on Greatest Hits.
Delete the first 16 beats, from 0:00.0 to 0:08.4 of the LP/45 version.
Segment 1
Begins on a downbeat
Ends on a snare
Extends from 0:08.4 to 2:53.6 of the LP/45 version
Extends from 0:00.0 to 2:45.2 of the promo 45 version
Delete the 32 beats from 2:53.6 to 3:09.6 of the LP/45 version.
Segment 2
Begins on a snare
Ends on a downbeat
Extends from 3:09.6 to 4:01.3 of the LP/45 version
Extends from 2:45.2 to 3:36.9 of the promo 45 version
Delete the 32 beats from 4:01.3 to 4:17.4 of the LP/45 version.
Segment 3
Begins on a downbeat
Extends from 4:17.4 to 4:39.3 (end) of the LP/45 version
Extends from 3:36.9 to 3:58.8 (end) of the promo 45 version
Your mixdown will run about 3:57 (excluding outro silence), or 3:58.8 (including outro silence), with edits at 0:00.0, 2:45.2, and 3:36.9.

Thanks Ron. That describes the version I always heard on the radio.
Whenever I hear the LP/45 version, it sounds awkward to me.

Is the promo 45 edit available on any CD?

I recreated a promo 45 edit with the instructions Ron
(crapfromthepast) posted earlier in this thread.

These versions are on the Into the Gap deluxe edition released last week:
• 4:38 album version, 2024 remaster (DR 9, good spectral balance, a touch more bass but not a huge difference from previous masterings).
• 5:47 Phil Thornalley Remix = edit of the Extended Version, same mastering as on Greatest Mixes.
• 7:52 Extended Version = same mastering as on Thompson Twins Box.
• 3:58 Single Edit = US DJ 45 version which seems to be from the master tape; sounds great!
• 4:27 Edit = early fade of the album version, as used on some import singles.
They got the version info swapped on the last two tracks, I think; they are saying the 4:27 version is the US promo edit, but that's obviously wrong.
I noticed on Discogs that the 7" releases from Canada, Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand purport to have a 3:58 version on them (according to the durations on the labels). I am wondering if this is the same as the US promo 45 edit.
