Did you know that versions of this song in the US use different samples and snippets than versions in the UK? There were licensing issues for some of the samples, so many were replaced or rerecorded when the record was released in the US.

The US version appears on:
  • O.S.T. Bright Lights, Big City (Warner Bros. 9 25688-2, 1988; 4:06; mastered by Bob Ludwig and the best-sounding US version)
  • Pump Up The Volume CD single (4th & B'way CCD 452, 1987; 4:10 for "radio edit")
  • On Top (PolyTel Canada 816 651 2, 1988; 4:09)

The UK version appears on:
  • Now 1987 (Virgin EMI Polygram UK 8 27071 2, 1993; 4:07; best-sounding UK version)
  • Now That's What I Call Music 10 (UK series) (4:08)
  • The Greatest Hits Of Dance (Telstar UK tcd2616, 1992; 4:08)

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one http://www.crapfromthepast.com" rel="nofollow - Crap From The Past .

Interesting. I don't think I've ever heard the UK version. Can you point
out some of the differences since we can't hear it.

It's a fascinating side-by-side comparison, if you've never heard it. The backing track and instrumentation are the same, but many of the samples are different.

For starters, the female "Yo all you home boys out in the bronx this one's for you" that begins the US version is now a Wolfman Jack saying "That's right this has got to be the greatest record of the year" on the UK version.

The Eric B and Rakim sample "pump up the volume" is the same in both, as is "brothers and sisters".

"Do it" is rerecorded for either the US or UK version - not sure which one. Same with "yeah yeah". There's a James Brown "watch me" in the UK version.

And so forth - if you know the US version well, you'll immediately recognize what's different in the UK version.    A fascinating listen.

The actual commercial 45 run time of M/A/R/R/S' "Pump Up the Volume" is 4:05. (Timing info compliments of abagon. The printed record label time is 4:06.) The only reason I post this is because CD entries of this song in the database (with the exception of the 12" version appearances) run 4:01-4:06.

Interesting that the US version would be on a Polytel Canada CD, since my Canadian 45 is the UK version.
