Ok, so I'm competing for this year's "picky picky picky' award, but...
In comparing the 45 version and the Varese "25 Alltime Novelty Hits" versions of this song, I've found a very slight edit at the 1:06 mark. It eliminates a short breath those girls in the backseat emit between "...Altogether now 1-2-3" and "Keep Your Mind on Your driving..." It has only been done to the 45; the LP ("In Your Home Tonight") has the breath intact. And if that's not bad enough, it sounds like the harmony is mixed slightly louder at that point, too. If this is correct, it would suggest that perhaps it wasn't just the breath that was taken out, but instead, part of an edit that inserted part of an alternate chorus line, w/the harmony mixed louder. Not to mention the CD runs slightly faster than the 45. That would be picky. What's a boy to do?

Actually, Robert, I don't think it's possible to be too picky on this message board!
So are you essentially saying that "Sittin' in the Back Seat" on the Varese 25 All-Time Novelty Hits CD is identical to what's on the Paul Evans In Your Home Tonight LP? Is that LP in mono or stereo? (I'd guess mono since there wasn't a lot of stereo being issued in 1959.) Finally, does anyone think this situation warrants a 45 version/LP version designation? Based on Robert's description, it sounds to me like it probably does.

Hi Todd,
Yes, the CD is identical to the album. Only the 45 was changed. The album screams out "Provocotive Stereo" across the top, but "Sittin' In The Back Seat" and "Happy-Go Lucky Me" are provocatively rechanneled. Everything else is stereo, including "Brigade Of Broken Hearts" and "Hushabye Little Guitar. Is there away to find out if the chorus @appx 1:06 has been edited?

There couldn't be any remixing done to the track as it was done as a mono demo. Paul himself told me that, and he also mentioned that he wanted to re-record a version in stereo and release a mono mix of that as the single but the label nixed that idea and released the demo as is. Obviously something is different between the two versions.... ill see if i can dig up Paul's email address, shoot him an email and see if he can tell me something about the two versions...

Our commercial vinyl 45 of "(Seven Little Girls) Sitting In The Back Seat" by Paul Evans (Guaranteed 200) states a time of (1:59), but actually runs (2:14).

My apologies to Robert for taking a year-and-a-half to get back to posting my observations regarding the 45 and the 25 All-Time Novelty Hits CD appearance (Varese Sarabande 302066329) of Paul Evans' "Seven Little Girls Sitting in the Back Seat". Better late than never, I suppose!
I did an A/B comparison between the two sources and I do notice the slight editing of the breath at the 1:06 mark that Robert pointed out in his initial post. I also tend to agree with his theory that an edit containing an alternate recording of the next couple of harmonized female verses ("Keep your mind on your driving, keep your hands on the wheel") was spliced in at that point on the 45. However, the vocal take of those verses on the 45 and LP sound similar enough that I'm not sure how valuable a 45/LP version distinction would be here. Honestly, even for the most discriminating ears, the 45 and LP sound like identical recordings unless one is specifically analyzing the splice at 1:06 on the 45.
If anyone else has any thoughts on how to treat this case, I'd be interested to hear them!
