There is a new Jackson 5 compilation entitled Number 1's released by Hip-O later this month. Could this finally! be the Mono singles compilation as "promised" years ago by Harry Weinger and team ?

fingers crossed!

I wasn't aware that Harry Weinger had ever said such a thing. It'll be great if that turns out to be true.

But I just looked it up on Amazon, and, while there's no tracklisting yet, the actual title of the disc is "The Jacksons Story: #1's," so I'll bet you money it's just a reissue of the old "The Jackson's Story" CD with a new cover.

Yeah! We'll never get lucky enough to get an actual singles comp.

if my memory serves me correctly he posted on some forum - the defunct Hip-O Select forum perhaps? - that it was in the pipeline!

i seem to remember him asking at one point after the release of the J5 In Japan! what we would most wish for next.. the choices were Jermaine Jackson "2-fers", Boogie, Joyful Jukebox Music or Mono Singles.

we got the "2-fer" of Boogie and Joyful Jukebox Music.

I recall him commenting on releasing the mono mixes of all the Motown singles, which is what we have been getting. perhaps this is the only way we will get those J5 mono singles, but probably not in a J5 comp.

Tracklisting is finally up on Amazon for "Jackson 5: #1s," and it is indeed simply a reissue of "The Jacksons Story" with a different cover.

That's a bummer, Brian. I wonder if Hip-O Select will eventually issue the mono mixes of the Jackson 5's singles on the label's Complete Motown Singles box set series?

   Yes, they will.

Yes, Todd and Grant, but just barely! I have all 7 "Complete Motown Singles" boxes so far, and plan to also buy the last 5 ('68, '69, '70, '71 and '72). Luckily, 1973 was the first year that Motown was reliably putting out all of their commercial 45s in stereo (although I still wish they would've also planned to issue Motown boxes for '73 and '74!)

Are they going through '72? For some reason, I thought it was '71.

Anyway, 1968 should be out before Christmas, and '69 through '71 will be out next year. Finally, I'll have "Mama's Pearl" and hopefully "Indiana Wants Me" in their true mono single versions.

Brian, to re-trace my steps as to how I thought it was gonna eventually be 12 volumes, I Googled "Complete Motown Singles" and "series", and an article allegedly "interviewing" Harry Weinger popped up, although I noticed no quoted passages by him within it. This article referenced the "twelve projected compendiums", and that's what I'm going by - certainly not etched in stone, but I've since seen/read nothing to the contrary. A Wikipedia entry also mentions twelve volumes for the series.

I think I just had it in my head that, since they were doing three a year, they would end with the third issue of 2008. But I guess it'll go into 2009.

Brian, I am positive I already had Volume 6 (1966) by December 2006, so only one volume has come out so far in 2007 (1967). With your "three-a-year" thoery, that would mean Volumes 8 & 9 (1968 & 1969) will appear by the end of 2007, and Volumes 10, 11 & 12 (1970, 71 & 72) by the end of '08.

By golly, you're right, Jim. I checked the release dates on the Hip-O website, and, while there were three releases a year for the first two years, they got a REALLY late start this year (May 25th). They had never started later than February before. So if we don't get Vol. 8 by September, I'll venture we won't see Vol. 9 until 2008. In fact, the shortest time between sets has been four months, so I think we won't get Vol. 9 this year no matter what. Damn.

Oh, well, better slow and right than fast and wrong.

Believe it or not, Hip-O has already announced Volume 9 (1969) of "The Complete Motown Singles," which is listed with a release date of 12/6, but shows "pre-order" on Hip-O's website. Hopefully this will ship before the end of the year.

And the good news is it DOES contain the the Rare Earth label singles -- in fact, all Motown subsidiary labels -- so we should finally have the single version of "Indiana Wants Me" on CD when Volume 10 comes out within the next six months.

Thanks for the 1969 "Complete Motown Singles" alert, Brian! I'm headin' over to the Hip-O Select website right now!

Which single version? The one with the siren intro or the one without? Both versions were out on commercial 45s.

Also...starting in '71 many Motown promo singles were mono/stereo. Will we get the stereo single versions or will these sets be strictly mono?

Judging from the previous sets, I would think they would include both versions. There are many instances of "first pressing" and "second pressing" notations on the Complete Motown sets.

Don't know about the stereo/mono question, but I would think they would go with the commercial 45 versions, whatever they may be.

In regards to mono/stereo promo versions, if there is a difference beyond the mono single version being a fold down, I would think that they would include both versions, as they did include other promotional-only versions on the earlier box sets.

I also suspect they would include both original 45 versions of Indiana Wants Me.

Live in stereo.
