Mono 45 and Mono LP versions of "Beggin" do not appear to have the handclaps heard on the stereo version, starting at around :30.

Maybe somebody else can hear them buried in there but I don't hear them at all.

I've noticed this too, Bill. I can't hear them either. Maybe they're just so buried in the mono mix they can't be heard. Perhaps LP mix and 45 mix is the case here?

Another good catch here by Bill Cahill. To date based on Bill's observation, the 45 version has not appeared on compact disc.

Pat, do you have the Ace "Edizione d'Oro" CD? It has most of their hits in mono, including "Beggin'" without the handclaps Bill mentions.

I've asked many folks over the years whether any of these are the true mono mixes (reportedly, "Sherry" isn't however...) as many of them do not sound like fold-downs. I've received little reply though. :(

I can send an MP3 of "Beggin'" (or any other song from that CD) to anyone who can compare with the 45.

David is correct. The handclaps are there on the 45, just BARELY noticable. You can hear them slightly better on "Edizione d'Oro" since that CD is a cleaner source than old 45s and albums. It is the same mix though.

Pat this might or might not then qualify as a different mix, up to you.

As far as "Edizione d'Oro" goes and whether or not it contains real 45 versions:

The only track which I would dispute as not being the 45 mix as claimed on the CD cover could be "Big Girls Don't Cry".

On all stereo versions of Big Girls Don't Cry there is no reverb on the music only segments, same with the mono version on "Edizione d'Oro"

However Big Girls Don't Cry (mono) on the new Jersey Beat compilation DOES have reverb on the music only parts, just like the mono VJ Greatest Hits vinyl.

I don't have a VJ 45. Does that feature the reverb?

Hmm... Awhile back, someone emailed me a 45 dub of "Sherry," and it just doesn't sound anything like what's on "Edizione d'Oro." Then I folded the stereo "Sherry," and it sounds just like what's on "Edizione."

I haven't heard a 45 of "Big Girls Don't Cry." But for anyone who wants some of the mono versions from the "Jersey Beat" box set without buying the whole thing, it's available on MusicGiants, downloadable by track.

Another couple of notes:

Big Girls Don't Cry on my mono VJ Golden Hits LP has reverb on everything. (oh.. and sounds SLOW)

Big Girls Don't Cry on the mono Second Gold Vault LP on Phillps does not have the extra reverb on everything.
