I have "A Different Corner" on an import CD called "Final" and the second half of the song is all crackly. Does anyone know if the recording on "Music From the Edge of Heaven" or "Best Of" is without the crackle sounds?

I have The Final as well, and it plays just fine all the way through. I think your copy is dirty or defective. Do you have a problem with the next track, "Battlestations"?

Yeah, mine plays fine too. Could be CD rot if the song after it is crackly as well... or the CD could be scratched or dirty.

I cleaned my CD (and there was no dirt or scratches on it to begin with), and I still get the crackle. The crackling is most noticeable in 2 spots:

2:31 on the words "care, no I'll never"
2:43 on the word "scared" (mostly at the end of the word)

I first noticed it on headphones.

So Brian and crapfromthepast, would you mind listening to these 2 spots and see if you have no crackle there?

If not, then I'll assume my CD has CD rot. If yours crackles on those 2 spots, then the question is -- does "Edge of Heaven" and "Best Of" have crackle on those 2 spots, too?

Well, I listened to my copy again in those two passages, and I could convince myself that maybe I did hear a little crackle. It's not the CD rot crackle - it's much more "soft", for lack of a better term. I only noticed on the long notes that George sings. I have this song on another CD - I'll give a comparison later this weekend and let you know what I find.

Although I don't have the Final compilation, I do have another one of their "best of" import CDs. On my copy of If You Were There, the song "Freedom" (45 version) has a few spots where it crackles. The noise sounds as if the volume fader was dirty, and someone was adjusting it. (Think of a shorted out volume knob.)

Well, I just compared "A Different Corner" on the CD in question, The Final (Epic UK, CD EPC 88681, 1986, to the version on my Now 1986 (Virgin EMI PolyGram UK 8 27068 2, 1993).

I do hear the faint crackly sound on The Final, but NOT on Now 1986. Amazing!

So the noise is in the mastering of The Final, and presumably not just on your copy of the CD. No need to re-buy! Also, it's good to know that the noise isn't on the 2-track mixdown tapes, since a clean copy exists on Now 1986.

Interesting. Can anyone tell if the 2 US CDs have the crackle in those 2 spots or not? (I can send a copy of my "Final" copy for reference.)

I got a copy of "Edge of Heaven" -- I compressed and brightened it to match it with the version on "Final", and can definitely say that there is no crackling of the song on "Edge of Heaven". Others have reported some crackling on "Final"; I have reported LOUD crackling on "Final" -- just in a few spots. So it seems there's definitely an issue with the "Final" master and not an issue of CD rot on my "Final" CD. Luckily, we have a good version on "Edge of Heaven". The CDs also differ by the fact that one CD has the album version and one has the single version, but the album version can easily be edited by chopping off the first 30 seconds or so.

I just loaded a copy from the "Final" CD into Adobe Audition... guess what happens at 2:31 & 2:43?

CLIPPING.

The distortion that you hear (That I now hear, so now I can't listen to this copy THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR RUINING IT) ;-) is from a number of square-wave peaks in those areas.

This really doesn't look like typical digital hard-limiting so common in today's CDs... this looks like they literally over-drove the analog input of the digital recorder, or at some point in the mastering process accidentally boosted the levels past 100%.

Rip the track to your computer & load it into Audacity or whatever your favorite audio editor may be, zoom in on those areas, and notice the crew-cut some of the peaks got.

It's a defective transfer to the digital domain as far as I'm concerned, as if the guy mastering the CD just checked the 1st 30 seconds for levels & let it run. I call it the "Good Enough" mastering technique.
