Does anyone know if a clean version of this exists? (Slick Rick)

I did a search all over and only found the explicit live version. Not sure if it was released on a promo CD single or not.

John, you've been bringing up some threads that are right in my area of expertise, even if they weren't top 40 hits. The song "La Di Da Di" is technically credited to Doug E. Fresh and MC Ricky D (aka Slick Rick), and it has been sampled in TONS of songs. Probably the most well-known "La Di Da Di" sample is from Color Me Badd's "I Wanna Sex You Up."

The song was never issued on any full-length Doug E. Fresh album, but rather it was the b-side to his song called "The Show." On CD, "La Di Da Di" has really only appeared a few times, and they are ALL the wrong version. In the original 12" version, Slick Rick sings a couple lines from "Sukiyaki," which apparently was never cleared for use. All CD versions edit out this part of the song.

Officially, there was not a clean version issued, since it was never intended to be a single. It only gained popularity after being sampled so many times. There is an unofficial edited version on Tommy Boy's Hip Hop Essentials series, where they have reversed the objectionable words. (The producers of this series did the editing, and there are numerous other unofficial edits and vinyl dubs on these discs.)

Very interesting. I'm just getting back into that "street" breakdance music from the early '80s. I haven't examened the version of la di da di I have yet but does the 12" version have instrumental parts you can used to cover up the objectionable words? This way it would appear as though just the vocal track was muted and not the music.

Well, the song really doesn't have any music, since it's an acapella track; however, if you're a creative editor, you should have no problem covering up the words with Doug E's beat boxing from other parts of the song.

I'll have to double check my UK 45 copy, but I'm pretty sure that the song does edit out the "Sukiyaki" part, too. The 45 I have is not a first pressing, though, since the A-side contains a remix of "The Show."

Oh yeah...I forgot it was an acapella. It's been a while.

I noticed discogs has two promo 45's listed for this.
The first being Reality – F-964 with the following
tracklisting:
A La-Di-Da-Di (Special Get Fresh Radio Mix)     4:55
B La-Di-Da-Di (Radio Mix)    4:55

The other is Reality – F-960-E with this tracklisting:
A La-Di-Da-Da / Vanessa Williams     4:10
B La-Di-Da-Di (Out Takes) 4:10

According to this thread at the time of our previous
postings back in 2007 there was no mention of these
promos. Can anyone describe the versions found on these
releases? Thanks!

Back in 2007, very few people must've known there was a promo 45 for "La Di Da Di." F-964 wasn't added to Discogs until around 2012. I was able to score a copy of it, and it cost me a small fortune.

The versions on this 45 are censored, and both are slightly different mixes from the original B-side version.

F-960-E is not a 1980s pressing. This surfaced much more recently and is very likely a bootleg.
