Database CD times for Leo Sayer's "When I Need You" range from 4:06 to 4:12. Perhaps someone with the 45 and LP vinyl copies can verify the run time for each.

my commercial 45 issued as warner 8332 states a run time of 4:11 but truely runs 4:09 and is identical to the version from his greatest hits cd....

Just FYI--in response to a query I had posted almost two years ago about this tune (my goodness, I've been here that long? :) ), according to Andy Chouffi some early commercial pressings and all promo copies of the vinyl LP have a version without the saxophone solo. Don't know if there was any time differential involved, though.

Doug, thanks for reminding me. I had completely forgotten about that thread, and for some reason, a search wasn't pulling it up. I did finally track down the thread on the board, but not comments were ever added to the database. I hope Pat adds that info, because I think it is important to note.

For those of you who have never heard the alternate
version of "When I Need You", its on today's American Top 40 replay on Sirius/XM.
I don't ever remember hearing it.
The replay airs at midnight eastern.

the way it was heard on the radio

I remember hearing the alternate version on the radio quite often back in 1977 here in Ontario, Canada. When I bought the single, I then heard the more common sax version.

Jim reports he has a different commercial 45 pressing than Ed. There is no printed run time on the record label of Jim's copy, but the actual time is 4:10. As Aaron pointed out earlier, the song's database CD times run from 4:05-4:12.

Is it safe to say that every CD release of "When I Need You" includes the sax solo (database says it has yet to appear without the sax on a domestic release)?

Doesn't the "Endless Flight" CD have the sax-free version?

Hi People,

Could anyone that has a copy of the non-Bobby Keys sax version handy to check around the 3:38 mark to see if there's that lone fingersnap?

I haven't heard the non-sax version in a while, but I seem to remember the lack of the one fingersnap on that version.

The non Sax version has no fingersnap. My copy is on an old Peters Productions automation reel.

Just found the LP version without the sax solo on an import CD. It's a 1996 UK release called Love Songs (total of 18 tracks on the Music Club label: MCCD 273).
