Ed, the song "But Anyway" was originally from the debut album by Blues Traveler, which was, indeed, released in 1990. Of course, they never had a top 40 hit until their 1994 album was released, Four, which featured the other hits you just posted info about ("Run-Around" and "Hook").
When the follow-up album to Four was to be released (Live From the Fall), I suppose the record label didn't want to release a "live" track to radio. Instead they decided to re-release "But Anyway," offering up edits of both the original album version and the newly released live version. Our station always played track 1 from the second promo single you listed, the "Studio Edit-Guitar."

My recollection is that here in Minneapolis, KDWB (the
Top 40) played the live edit and the KEGE (the big
alternative station) played the studio version. I'm
guessing this was not typical of what happened in most
markets, since Top 40s tend to avoid live versions.
