both my commercial 45 and commercial cassingle are issued as columbia 68569 with the same track on them which runs 4:28 and is identical to the version on the cd listed below......both the 45's face and cassingles cardboard sleeve states a run time of 4:26 it actually runs 4:28.....the commercial 45 was NEVER issued with a picture sleeve.....

Gene, the song didn't do well for us, so we only played it for a few weeks. I
just listened to the (Single Version), and, as best as I can honestly recall, think that's the one we went with. If for no other reason than, during those early days of us using/playing promo CD singles on the air, we'd usually opt to play for "Cut 1" off of them, especially at the start. Pretty scientific, eh? :) |

My promo 45 is the same timing. Yep, they were still issuing them in early '89. As with Jim's station, we didn't play the song for more than 2-3 weeks either as I recall. |

This is another track that I remember being MUCH larger than it actually was... I'm guessing the topic of the chorus helped it stick with me. ;-) Listening back, I see why it tanked... other than having a "shocking" topic, it was just a pretty weak song, especially compared to the "gotta dance" feel of "Just Got Paid" (helped, in no small part, I'm sure, by the involvement of the father of New Jack Swing, Teddy Riley). I just A/B'd files I have labeled "single version" and "album version" and... what am I missing? The LP version and the single version sound identical to me.
Is it drum reverb? Is the lead vocal slightly hotter in the LP version? I can't pick out differences when I'm playing one in the left channel and the other in the right... Hey Gene,
I have the promo CD for this one, which has several mixes (as noted upthread). On the back inlay, there is a notation that the "Single Version" on the CD is taken from the Sing soundtrack, which would kind of confirm that the album version and single version are the same. My opinion is that this is one of those cases where the "Single Version" notation is just shorthand for "the most straight-ahead normal, non-dancey sounding, not extended or 'specially remixed' version". Just my 2 cents, though! |
