Just noticed that in the Time-Life Contemporary Country and Classic Country series there is a version of this song with a lyric change at 1:06, where the line "...bourbon in a glass and grass" is changed to "...old TV shows and snow." I'd never heard this version and wondered if anyone knew the story on it.

My best guess is that the words 'bourbon' and 'grass' might have prompted Mercury Records to send out more "friendly" version to radio stations. That still happens today, incidentally. My company created a radio-promotion campaign for RAB (Radio Advertising Bureau) to distribute to their member stations. It was called "In The Crapper." We ended up doing a softer version titled "In The Dumper" for stations who preferred to not be heard crapping on the air.

Sorry to digress here, but Pat, how would you note this in the DB? "Alternate DJ edit" if that's what indeed it is? The only other CD I have it on is the Hip-o Ultimate Collection and that is the correct one.

I've never heard the alternate version either. My copy is a promo, but it's the "bourbon & grass" version.

Interestingly, there was a parody of this song called "I Like" by a guy who calls himself Heathen Dan that also has 2 versions. One appears on a Dr. Demento compilation album...this version makes a reference to cocaine. There's another version, with different lyrics...the only copy of which I have is on a rather poor-quality tape of the good doctor's radio show.

I just updated the database with regards to the alternate lyric situation. All of the Time-Life cd's have used the alternate lyrics version over the years.

I also discovered the alternate lyric on Classic Country Gold I found online.

So, to the folks who played this song on the radio in 1974, which version did your station play?

And which version can be found on commercial 45 copies?

Todd, just for the record, my 1974 commercial 45 also features the "bourbon in a glass...and grass" lyric.

Just noticed that there's a collection on iTunes and
Rhapsody on the Mercury Nashville label called "Country
Songs For Children", released in 1995, that has the
alternate lyric.

No surprise if it's a collection of Tom T. Hall songs
for children.

My Mercury Promo copy of this is "Bourbon in a glass and grass" which the station I jocked at played, as did the other Country and Pop stations in my area.
