http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msOwM2lD6z0 An edit from 2:40 of the single version to 3:13. Editing on the 4th beat seemed to work best. Then a fade of 17 seconds or so to 3:59. It does not appear this version is available on CD. Which one got the most airplay? |

The commercial 45 I have (4:44 listed, 4:45 actual) is the file copy KDWB used to dub the song to cart. It's a styrene Bestway pressing (deadwax: TT - 103 - 82 NP 6070 BW [plus some indecipherable initials] along with the oval EDP logo.) The fonts and layout on the label shown in the YouTube clip indicate a PRC pressing (assuming, of course, it was the actual source of the audio.) Since at least one independent plant (Bestway) was contracted out for this job, this might be a case of one plant mistakenly using the DJ stamper for some stock copies. Anybody with the shorter stock 45 want to chime in with pressing details? |

We didn't play the song where I worked in early '83 (the PD wasn't comfortable with the line "bullet hits the bone"), of the CHRs in Boston only WHTT played it and they played the 4:44 version. I didn't think to ask if I could have the promo since I already had a stock copy (though I would have had I known there was an edit...promo edits are one of my collecting interests). |

I don't remember why I have provided the wrong actual running time on the first post in 2008.
The actual running time is (3:59),which is the same as the You Tube link by Indy 500. Pat, the indicated time (4:05) on the db is incorrect. Modify it, please! My commercial 45 info is below. LONG 45: dedwax # (82 NP 6070 BW (plus some indecipherable initials.) This is identical to the Yah Shure's number. The factory number "19" on the record label. SHORT 45 deadwax # (82NP 6070 - SHORT PRC - C1(or Cl, CI) - (some indecipherable initials)) The factory number "72" on the record label. --abagon |

Thanks for the heads-up, I was able to track down a promo
copy of this. It almost sounds like there are 2 edits in the short version: the instrumental bridge being shortened and another somewhat rough-sounding edit about :25 before that. |

When comparing the promo edit to the stock 45 version, the section from 2:40 to 3:13 is removed, and the promo fades sooner. According to the Feb 18, 1983 edition of R&R mag, 86 stations were playing it. It just never made it past "New And Active". Possibly if it was a 40 position chart-as it later became-itwould have charted. |

I'd be surprised if it wasn't the LP version. In Chicago, WLS-AM played the long 45 during the day and the LP version at night. WLS-FM played the LP version in all dayparts except mornings (simulcast with the AM). Most likely it would've cracked the R&R Top 40, had the chart gone that far down, likely stalling somewhere around #35 or so. I remember lots of airplay on the local rock stations and just heard it a handful of times on the Top 40 stations. The fact that it hit #1 on Billboard's Rock Tracks chart confirms that it was a big rock hit, not so much Top 40. |
