My stock 45(RCA PB-13065) actual running time is (3:25) not (3:37)as stated on the record label. This tune on vinyl LP "Private Eyes"issued U.S.'s running time is (3:36) This single is simply faded earlier than the LP. Confirm,please. |

| Abagon, I have just timed my commercial 45, and both the mono and stereo sides of my promo 45. All 3 of these sides do have a listed time of (3:37), but an actual time of (3:25), confirming your findings above. Many thanks for your excellent detective work, Abagon! |

| I'm in the process of digitally re-creating the 45 fade of Daryl Hall & John Oates' "Did It in a Minute" out of one of my CD sources. Abagon is absolutely correct that the 45 is an early fade of the LP. Pat, you might want to add "LP length" comments next to each of the song's CD entries in the database for the benefit of your subscribers. |

Fourteen years later... The 45 is a unique mix, but the differences are subtle.
I played my promo 45 today, and at the very beginning there is something that sounds like a splice during the first note. This immediately stood out to me, and it made me want to investigate the entire song a bit further. To my surprise, I found that the 45 puts the electric guitars and piano in the center, while the LP mix has them slightly panned. There are other places where the 45 version mixes the vocals a bit louder, especially during the last part of each verse during the key change. It's not the LP mix narrowed, because that was what I initially thought. I listened to at least a dozen different CD copies, and they all have the LP mix. I can report for sure that the stock 45 has the same mix as the promo 45, but it does not have the "glitch" (or splice) on the intro. I also have a reissue 45, again with the 45 mix, but this copy does have a glitch on the intro, although it comes sooner than the promo 45's glitch. Here's a copy of the reissue 45 playing:

I don't know what to make of this, as it doesn't sound like a typical tape dropout. If it were, I would expect it to be on all copies and in the exact same place. The glitch shows a momentary drop in high frequencies.
The spectrograms of the promo 45 and the reissue 45 show the same momentary drop in high frequencies, but at different times, as Aaron reported. Unusual, for sure, but it tells me that there likely isn't any permanent tape damage. If I had to guess, I'd vote debris on the tape near the beginning of the song. That's too bad Sony never noticed this had a unique 7" mix. I was so glad when
the 7" mix of "I Don't Wanna Lose You" (#42, and very different than the LP mix) was included on the "Playlist" CD, IIRC. This would have been the perfect CD to include the 7" mix of DIIAM. Sadly, since Sony no longer reissues CDs, I guess we'll never see this mix come out from tape sources. Although I suppose there's a slight chance it could be released as digital-only, since not CD. |
