my commercial cassingle issued as geffen 19145 contains a non described version (on the cardboard sleeve), but states "lp version" on the cassingle itself, and is the 6:01 full lp length version.....i have a different promo cd single than what todd posted in his lengthy thread regarding 45 and lp differences

PETER GABRIEL - STEAM (Geffen PRO-CD-4479)
1) Edit - 4:44
2) LP version - 6:00
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:44) and (6:00); commercial copies were all (6:00)

my promo cd single is issued as geffen pro cd 4484 and contains the below tracks/versions

1-steam (edit) (4:44)
2-steam (oh, oh let off steam mix 7") (4:33)
3-steam (oh, oh let off steam mix 12") (8:40)

this info should be added to the db..

Interesting find, Ed... I've never seen this particular promo CD single release for "Steam" before. Are the "oh, oh, let off steam" mixes considerably different from the original hit mix?

And kudos for finding the disc for $1.99! ;-)

don't know....never listened to those mixes...would you like copies for your review?....as far as the $1.99 price....there used to be dozens of used records stores here on long island back in the day (90's) and i used to frequent them every weekend.....sometimes you steal items and sometimes you get had....it all works out in the end...

Sure, I wouldn't mind taking a listen to those mixes. But no hurry, sir... Whenever you happen to get around to them.

I know EXACTLY where you bought that promo CD single, ed, lol - over the years, I've spent plenty of money at that same store. :-) I, too, lived on "Lawn Guyland" for just over 10 years, from 1991-2001. And during that whole time, I was a regular or semi-regular at EVERY indie record store on LI & in NYC, so I don't doubt that we must've crossed paths more than once...

Sadly, you're right - the no. of indie stores on the Island has indeed shrunk from over 50 in the mid '90s to about only a dozen today, and I still make the rounds about once a year, when I go back to visit. (Wouldn't ever wanna live there again, though!) The owners all still remember me well. :-) I know of only a couple of new stores that have opened since I left about six years ago; the nos. just continue to shrink. :-( I was last there this past September, and had to shudder when I walked up to the charred shell that had been "Looney Tunes" in West Babylon, as it had burned down only two weeks before. (They say they're gonna re-build, though. Let's hope they can make a comeback!)

Loved stores like "The Music Arcade" (formerly "Titus Oaks Record Exchange"; Hicksville & Huntington Station), "Music Den" (Oceanside, Commack & Port Jefferson), and many others. RIP...

Oh, and I have to agree w/ your end philosophy above, too...
