I've always thought even the 4:54 45 version would be too long for AM radio in 1970. I've never seen a DJ promo but while listening to an old American Top 40 I noticed their version had one edit that brings the song down to 3:52. The final 20 seconds of Casey talks over.

It occurs at 2:16 (of the 45 version) at "I'm looking for..."
The song is then rejoined at 3:18 right before the 2nd "I'm looking for..."
Be careful not to cut off Justin's deep breath before the 2:16 edit or it will sound abrupt. Otherwise it's a very clean edit.

Anyone ever seen a promo that duplicates this?

My pleasure, Indy. AT40 likely did their own edit. Thanks for posting the points; I'll have to try it out.

That 1972's "Isn't Life Strange" would manage a #29 showing in spite of its (6:03) stated time showed that by then, AM top-40 had embraced the group. My college station got two extra copies - each from a different pressing plant - and they were both stereo/mono (6:03.)

So it was a bit of a surprise that the 1975 Hayward/Lodge DJ single of "I Dreamed Last Night"/"Remember Me, My Friend" (#47) featured edits on both songs. Both sides were also mono remixes, since Justin's split-channel vocals tended to get a little buried when summed to mono on the unedited stereo stock 45.

What was the time on the Threshold/Timepieces reissue 45 of Question? I have the disc somewhere i think, but at this point can't get to it... i don't remember it being the full length song but it very well could be...

Tom, http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh240/YahShure/MoodyBlues-QuestionThresholdTimepie.jpg - the Timepieces reissue (stereo, 45 version) does not have a listed time on the label. The actual running time is (4:53.)

The stereo DJ 45 both states and runs (4:55.) The two are the same speed, but the Timepieces reissue fade dumps out two seconds earlier.

(And the Timepieces flip, "Ride My See Saw" (stereo) is not the 45 version; it includes the drum/countoff intro found on the LP, but not on the original mono 45.)

I agree that's probably a custom AT40 edit on Question. They did a lot of those especially when it was a three hour show trying to squeeze in 40 records. On "Isn't Life Strange", I do know of many AM stations that played the 4:25 edit instead of the 6:03 full version. And unfortunately, TM Century Rock kept playing that ridiculous 3:06 edit on Nights in White Satin way past 1972.

I never knew there was an edit of that, though I thought it strange a song that long wouldn't have one. My copy is 6:03 on both the mono & stereo sides.

Were any commercial singles of this in stereo? I have 2 promo copies, one is stereo (both RMSS & the flip) the other mono.

No, RMSS was mono, as were all commercial Moody Blues 45s ("Questions" included) prior to "The Story In Your Eyes." On my '68 copy of RMSS, the song hasn't entirely faded out before it begins to segue into "Dr. Livingston, I Presume," as the trail-out groove starts to head toward the label.

I actually have a mono 45 DJ edit running 4:26 or so for "Isn't Life Strange", although I had to hunt that one down.

I also did a nice stereo recreation running the same as the mono DJ 45 if you'd like to hear it Steve.

Someone at the Steve Hoffman forum stated yesterday that all the 45s after Nights in White Satin were fold-downs.

I do know that my fold-down of Question sounds balanced.
