I know everyone wants the true 45 versions...but wouldn't it be nice if we could hear "Goin' Out of My Head / Can't Take My Eyes Off You" without the canned applause. I'd like something like the remix of Rare Earth's "Get Ready" that removed the fake applause.
I guess it could of been done for the CD "Capital Collectors Series"...but it wasn't.
I think the song holds up well today (just like their version of "Hurts So Bad") but doesn't get much airplay (even though it's a Top 10 song)...and it's probably because of the applause!

Was it a studio recording with audience overdubbed? I have the live album, but it's never sounded anything other than live to me....
------------- Live in stereo.

I always thought it sounded "canned" to me. If you have a live LP I stand corrected!

The studio version is listed in the database as the 'non-hit'. Since I was a wee little boy, I've always heard the song with applause.

I also believe the single was a studio concoction that was inserted in a 'live' album (a la Fifth Dimension's "Never My Love").
Certainly the audience response was canned as it fades out in the beginning (instead of dissipating).
The impeccable perfomance & engineering of the track also raises red flags.

My commercial 45, which is mono and confirmed as Capitol 2054, has a listed time of (2:55), but an actual time of (3:05).

Me,too, and always thought that it's LIVE!!
First time that I heard of this non-
applause recording!
------------- You know you're really older when you think that younger singer Jesse McCartney's related in anyway to former Beatle Paul McCartney.

You can safely add this to the list of studio recordings
with canned applause. If you listen to the mix, it's quite
obviously a typical late-60's hard-panned multi from a
studio session. Notice the drum/bass/piano track is
completely isolated from the horn and string and vocal
tracks.
A real live recording mix would not sound like that. Just
sayin'
