According to my research, commercial 45 copies of Johnny Lee's "Lookin' for Love" state a run time of 3:36 on the record label. The actual 45 run time appears to be 3:40, based on the database comments for many of the song's CD appearances. This printed vs. actual run time difference should probably be noted in the database. |

Todd: The actual running time of my stock commercial 45 is (3:34). The listed time is "3:36"(Full Moon/Asylum E-47004).

my commercial 45 issued as full moon/asylum 47004 states a run time on the label as 3:36 but runs 3:34.....info in the run out groove is "es-47004-a 3cth"...if you use the cd version below and fade out for 0:03 from 3:31 to 3:34 you'll effectively recreate the true vinyl 45 version....

Reviving this old thread...(a quick aside - for a thread
this old, should one revive or start a new topic?) There are two different mixes/versions of "Lookin' for Love" - LP version and single version. I can't speak to all the comps on which the song appears, but the 3:28 version with truncated fade is the single version, quickly faded about :06 early. The version on Rhino's "Radio Daze" series is the LP version, so the true single cannot be recreated from it. The single is slightly pitched up, and is a remix. The mix differences are not overwhelming, but are apparent. The easiest way to differentiate is in the intro. The second, harmony guitar is louder, especially in the intro, and the eq is much smoother in the upper mids. On the LP version, the second guitar is more buried in the mix, and the snare drum rimshot is much more prominent. With some speed adjustment and eq, the full 45 version version can be recreated by tacking the LP fade on to the truncated single mix, and be virtually undetectable. |

I always thought there was a difference in what I was hearing. I took your advice and grabbed the Greatest Hits version and pasted on the LP ending after a speed change and some tweaking with the EQ. In comparing the various versions, I thought Rhino had merely unearthed a lower-generation tape source than all the other compilations out there. Nope. Listen on the opening notes of the song. Jay correctly points out that the harmonizing guitar is more prominent in the 45 mix. It's subtle, for sure. I have the 45 mix running 3:34 on Time-Life's 2-CD Echoes Of Love (1991). The same analog transfer is used on a 2-CD set called Legends Of Country Music (1993). There's another analog transfer running 3:28 on JCI's Only Country 1980-1984 (1995), which shortens the fade compared to the above two. The same analog transfer is used on Time-Life's 2-CD Classic Country Vol. 11 1980-1984 (1999; left and right channels are swapped) and Warner Special Products' Mystic Music Presents Soft Love (1999). ------------- There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one http://www.crapfromthepast.com" rel="nofollow - Crap From The Past . |

Yes, those two CDs match the 45. Same mix, same fade points, same length.
I suspect that any disc running 3:34 will also match the 45, but I can't confirm. I also suspect that any disc running 3:28 has its mastering based on Johnny Lee's Warner Bros. Late to the party for this discussion but I just recently joined.
The 45 version of Lookin' For Love was issued on the 1989 Warner Bros. various artists compilation Country Love Songs [Warner Bros. 25967-2] Running time listed on the insert is 3:37 but the audio fades out at about 3:34. That compilation is available as a download but from the brief sample I cannot verify that it is indeed exactly the same as the 1989 CD release. The running time is listed as 3:38.
