I live in South Carolina, and the Columbia top 40 station is playing a different version of the Black Eyed Peas song "Don't Phunk with My Heart", replacing the word "phunk" with "mess". (Don't Mess with My Heart)

Now, obviously, the phrasing was too close to something else for the comfort of the radio managers. My question, though, is if this is an official radio version, provided by the Peas themselves, or is this a "homemade" edit?

JMD1961:

Every time I've heard the song on local radio here in Pittsburgh, it's always been "Don't Mess with My Heart". I've done some research and there is a DJ CD promo of this song on A&M 11406 with the following track listing: 1) Radio Mix; 2) Clean Version. I don't have this disc so I can't confirm the content or run times.

I have that promo CD, and they don't say "mess" in either. The Radio Mix says "phunk" and the Clean version just has the word blanked out.

I work in Top 40 radio, and the record company serviced at least two different promo singles. I have the one that is mentioned above, where the "clean version" simply blanks out the word "phunk."

There is another promo single that replaces the word "phunk" with "mess," so yes, this is an official record company edit. I have this version on a Promo Only CD.

I also have a version of this that fades out the "Phunk" part.

The Don't Mess With My Heart version was prepared by the band as request from Clear Channel Radio. With the FCC cracking down on all sorts of things, it was felt having another version would be the safest thing to do. Some stations in Clear Channel have chosen that version, others have not. Clear Channel stations can download it from the main Clear Channel site. I don't know if the band made it available to other broadcast groups, or if it ever made it to Promo CD. We often get things sent to us as WAV files or high quality MP3s.
Wouldn't surprise me if that version ended up on some Radio Disney CD or something..

Bill, I work for Radio Disney, and although we never played the song, they did send us that version on a promo single. I think it was an acetate rather than an officially pressed CD.

I finally tracked down a copy of the promo single of "Don't Mess With My Heart." It's a 1-track promo on A&M with no catalog number, and, as I remembered above, it's on a record company CD-R rather than a factory pressed disc.

1. Radio Mix (printed 4:03; actual 4:02)

Pat, you may want to add this info to the database, since a lot of markets played this version instead of "Phunk."

The "don't mess" version was also released on both TM HitDiscs and the Jones weekly discs.

I would love to post the information on these two different dj cd singles but need some specific information on the A&M 11406 single such as the stated and actual run times of the two versions on that single.

Brian,

Any chance you still have it? I would love to hear it. Thanks.
