I know that "Bad Boy" (single) only came out on a TM Century promotional CD, and that's the only place it's out. I'm pretty certain "Betcha" (single) has never been on CD.

I have the TM disc that has "Bad Boy" and it sounds to me like a tape source, rather than just a transfer from the vinyl 45.

Edtop40, all three of those 45 versions have been released on the Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine "Hits" promo CD (ESK 1336).

After AndrewChouffi referenced the CD as having the 45 version of "Bad Boy" I became interested and bought it.

I was very pleased upon listening to find out it also contained the single version of "Falling In Love (Uh-Oh).

To my knowledge, the singles in which the 45 version differs from the album version that are included on this disc are:

Bad Boy *
Falling In Love *
Betcha Say That *
Anything For You
1-2-3

The tracks with an asterisk are those which as far as I know are available on CD promo only.

Though I have the TM Century CD that has the 45 version of "Bad Boy", I don't understand why the song wasn't included on the Gloria Estefan "Greatest Hits" CD that was released in 1992. That's their second top ten hit and definitely one of their most popular.

It is strange, definitely, could it have to do with some restriction on the number of tracks?

I recall that was the case with another Sony greatest hits package "12 Deadly Cyns" from Cyndi Lauper. The US version has 14 tracks as opposed to the european release which has 16 (same number of tracks on each in the case of Estefan's "Greatest Hits").

I remember asking a person close to the recording industry and they had explained to me some sort of limit or extra cost of including more than a certain number of tracks in the USA, but I honestly don't remember exactly.

The publishing/songwriting royalties are determined differently in the US than they are in Europe. In the US, for each CD sold, the publishers and songwriters of a song receive a total of 8.5 cents, to be divided among themselves. Therefore, if a CD is to have 16 songs instead of 14 in the US, the record company has to pay out an extra 17 cents -- whereas in most European countries, the publishing/songwriting royalties are a fixed amount per CD, say for instance, $1 total for all the songs whether the CD contains 10 songs or 20 songs -- if 10 songs are on the album (in my example above), then each song's publishing/songwriting royalties will be 10 cents (to be divided among all the publishers and songwriters on that song); but if 16 songs are used, then the $1 is split among 16 songs. Therefore, in Europe, the label doesn't really care if they put on 16 songs or 10 because they pay the same total amount in publishing royalties either way. And that's why European CDs are often more loaded with songs than their US counterparts. This is a slight simplication of the facts (for instance, if a U.S. record label can convince every publisher on a record to receive less than their normal rate, for instance 3/4 of the normal rate, then the label can put on more songs without having to pay the whole 8.5 cents for each song.)

Thanks EdisonLite, very detailed and interesting!

That's it JeffH, it's very likely that is why they left "Bad Boy" out even though its chart performance made it eligible for the compilation.

For those interested in versions of "Bad Boy", I did some research on the version included in most non USA versions of "Greatest Hits", and it's different from both the "Primitive Love" album version and the single remix found on the "Hits" promo CD (ESK 1336).

If I'm not mistaken, the single version on that US promo CD was remixed by Shep Pettibone, while the other one was mixed by Pablo Flores.

The "hit" 45 version of "Bad Boy" was an edit of the 12" remix done by Shep Pettibone. I wasn't aware of Pablo Flores remixing this track. I do know that he did the 12" remix of "Conga".

Thanks for the insight, Edison. Whenever I buy a Hits comp in the future, and say to myself "How did they ever leave ***** off!", I will think of your post.

Yes, I have that 12" Pettibone remix on the "12 Inch Mixes" european CD. The listed credits and running times are:

Bad Boy (Club Mix)
6:26
Special remix by Pablo Flores

The actual running time of the track is 6:11 which coincides with the 6:11 time of the Pettibone 12" mix on various 12" records, and indeed it's a longer version of the USA 45 version, so my guess is they got the wrong credit info for the track.

Apparently USA pressings of the 12" only have the Pettibone mixes.

But in the UK I have found two different pressings.

One where the remix credits go to Pablo Flores, with a 6:26 running time:

http://www.discogs.com/release/418253

Then there is a 12" with a cover that reads "Shep Pettibone Remix" (TA 6537), and has the 6:11 version.

I have never heard that 6:26 version on the UK pressing, but as you can see credits mention Flores, as well as the erroneous listing on the "12" Mixes" CD.

My guess is the 45 version in the UK was the one included in the "Greatest Hits" euro version.

Since it is neither album nor Pettibone mixes, and I have so far only found Flores besides Pettibone on the remix credits of the various "Bad Boy" releases, I thought it was probably him, but I could be wrong.

Actually, the 45 cannot be successfully extracted from the 12" version. I tried this, thinking that an edited needle drop of the 12" would make a better-sounding source than the 45. Unfortunately, some sections are unique to the 45.

Roscoe, if you'd like, I can make a high quality mp3 of the 45 version from the "Hits" CD and send it to you.

So with the fairly recent releases of "Playlist" and "Essential", is it safe to say that "Betcha Say That" is now her only top 40 hit whose single version is not available on a commercial CD? (It's only available on the promo "HITS" CD and nowhere else, right?)

So regarding the Pablo Flores remix (the European version) of "Bad Boy" - the edit of Flores' remix (i.e. European 45 version) apparently can be found on these CDs:

Essential (US)
Very Best Of (European)
Greatest Hits (European version, NOT the US version)

So how about the full, 6:26 Pablo Flores remix - is that on ANY CD (or is it only on the actual 12" vinyl)?? (The full, 6:11 12" remix by Shep Pettibone did make it to CD on the Japanese "Best Remixes" CD - but there's no mention here if the 6+ minute version of Pablo Flores' remix made it to CD).

I see that the Miami Sound Machine "Hits" Promo CD is listed as having the Spanglish (half Spanish/half English) version of "Anything For You", but in reality it's the Spanish version. Has the Spanglish version ever appeared on CD? I remember hearing it a lot on the radio in D.C. and L.A.

Apparently the single version of "Betcha Say That" appears on the Essential 3.0 version of that compilation (Pat just added it to the database).

Great news! I just ordered a copy. (I even recently got the single edit/mix of "Betcha Say That" in WAV/digital form from a friend here on this site [You know who you are! :) ], but it'll be nice to have this version on an actual CD, too. Plus, it's always good to support the music industry when they pay attention to details and do something right on a compilation CD (which, often times, is NOT the case!)

I just A-B'd the version of "Betcha Say That" on "Essential 3.0", which Pat showed me, and it is indeed the single version. This marks the first time ever that this version was commercially released on CD. The other two releases were both promos - the "Hit" compilation CD and the promo CD single.

Thank you EdisonLite! Would anyone be able to confirm that
Seal Our Fate is the edited single version?

I just received "Essential 3.0" today. The version of "Seal Our Fate" is 4:23, not the 3:54 single edit. But the best thing about "3.0" is that it definitely has the single version of "Betcha Say That", 1st time ever on a commercial CD.

To recap:

Gloria Estefan "The Essential Gloria Estefan 3.0" includes:

http://www.discogs.com/Gloria-Estefan-The-Essential-Gloria-Estefan-30/release/3640397 - http://www.discogs.com/Gloria-Estefan-The-Essential-Gloria-E stefan-30/release/3640397

Betcha Say That [Single Remix]

There's nothing else of interest on this compilation. Talk about waste of space. They could've included a few more single versions on the CD, such as "Cherchez La Femme", and the single versions of "Seal Our Fate" and "You
Can't Walk Away From Love".

"Playlist: The Very Best Of Gloria Estefan" includes:

http://www.discogs.com/Gloria-Estefan-Playlist-The-Very-Best-Of-Gloria-Estefan/release/2193289 - http://www.discogs.com/Gloria-Estefan-Playlist-The-Very-Best -Of-Gloria-Estefan/release/2193289

Falling In Love (Uh-Oh) [Single Remix]
Bad Boy [Single Remix]
Oye Mi Canto (Hear My Voice) [Radio Mix]
