In a span of just 3 years, Rihanna has accumulated 11 top 40 hits, 9 of which made top 10, 6 top 3 and 4 #1's. Spending her second week at #1 with her fourth chart topper ("Disturbia"), I thought it was time for a look back.

Hmm, I didn't know Rihanna had joined the exclusive club of artists with 20 or more top ten hits. Beyonce has not achieved that yet.
Off the top of my head, the only other female solo artists to amass 20 or more top ten singles (using only the Billboard singles sales charts prior to the Hot 100) are Madonna, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, and, believe it or not, Dinah Shore! For female groups, I think it's the Supremes and The Andrews Sisters, and that's it. |

I know, it's pretty crazy.
Also, she is in extremely good chart company having secured 11 #1 singles. She's just surpassed Stevie Wonder and Janet Jackson and is currently "tied" with Whitney Houston. Once she achieves her next chart topper, she'll match The Supremes and Madonna's total of 12. Then it's off to Michael Jackson's 13. Not sure if it has appeared on CD, but the actual run time for this version, simply labeled as "Remix," runs 3:39. I'm pretty sure this is the only version that was released to radio, and I can't imagine them playing the 1:20 LP version. The only version of "Birthday Cake" that has been commercially released (either physically or digitally) is the 1:18 version on the Talk That Talk album. This is not the hit version. (Chris Brown does not appear on it.) Earlier this year, her label started to promote to radio stations and clubs the much longer "Remix" featuring Chris Brown to which Aaron refers. Because of the history between the two artists, however, there was a considerable negative reaction to it. As a result, Rihanna's label decided not to commercially release it in any form. If you look on iTunes, you'll see a lot of angry comments from people who mistakenly purchased the 1:18 version, believing they were actually purchasing the version with Chris Brown they were hearing on the radio (which is almost three times as long). So what we have here is the unusual situation of a hit song of which only a 1:18 snippet has ever been commercially released. The odd thing is that Rihanna's new album, released five days ago, does contain another track featuring Chris Brown. |

| For the longest time I thought Rhapsody messed up with "Birthday Cake" fading out in the middle of the song! I could see why people were upset if they paid money for that. So I guess no long dirty version exists? |

Just stumbled on this thread...
There is a long dirty version of Birthday Cake (Remix) featuring Chris Brown. it is called the "Main" version and I believe it was serviced to radio stations on the same promo CD as the censored version. The censored version is called the "Clean" version. I think this has been gone over many times, but when we refer to the hit versions of songs post-2000, what does that mean here? Are those the lead cuts on the dj promo cds? Does anybody have the fade details for the radio versions of Umbrella and Don't Stop the Music? Looking for beginning and end points of the fades, please. |

Due to the emergence of digital downloads numerous post 2010 hits can only be found digitally and not on CD. From about 2000-2008 there was a CD single generally that was released, until those eventually stopped. You have some Itunes downloads which were the only way to get certain songs. I would refer to anything post 2010 as available digitally and the hit version. The physical CD lossless single is gone, in its place is 7Digital, Tidal Store and Onkyo Store and Amazon or Itunes (for lossy). Girls Like You by Maroon 5 (with Cardi B) is a perfect example of a song right now only available through a digital download. The hit version is the one that charts and is available commercially. So the hit version of a song generally before 2008 had a CD single release. After 2008, some CD singles are around but generally the radio edits can also be found digitally. Not saying you can't find them on CD's (Grammy series, NOW series etc) just that digital downloads this past decade are now the hit versions you see chart. |
