Anyone know how to recreate the DJ 45 edit of this song,
running 3:44?

Just bumping up eriejwg's post from 2013... as I would also like to know how to recreate the DJ 45.

Thanks.

The 3:44 version of the song is a reverb-laden remix, and can't be edited down from the 4:01 version.

Here's a https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sor0kzUJauE - YouTube video of the 3:44 45 being played.

Apparently, the 3:44 version was also released on some pressings of the commercial 45, not just on a white-label promo 45. It has the same catalog number as the 4:01 version (Columbia 4372), but a different matrix number.

Ah, great catch, cftp! Indeed, a quick scan of all U.S. copies of the 45 currently listed on eBay reveals that a second pressing of "Dancing in the Sheets" w/ the (3:44) version does exist on commercial/stock copies as well (which the YouTube poster obviously has). In fact, it seems to be equally as common as the first pressings w/ the (4:01) O.S.T. Footloose LP version (so neither is rare) - and yes, the label even says "Mixed by John 'Jellybean' Benitez" on those second pressings. Those containing the (3:44) remix definitely came later, as I noticed white-label promo/dj copies w/ that version clearly state "DJ RESERVICE" on the labels - and as you rightly noted, the matrix no. is higher as well. (Although Pat's db notes don't make it clear, yes, there were TWO different physical promo/dj 45s issued - in other words, there wasn't just one, featuring the 4:01 LP version on one side, and the 3:44 remix on the other.) Heck, even the 1988 "Hall of Fame" re-issue 45 on Columbia 13-08421 (also b/w the instrumental version) features the (3:44) remix. So it looks like Pat will need to revise his db notes for this one; there are currently three U.S. CDs listed that contain the (3:44) remix (vs. 11 w/ the LP/original 45 version), so while it isn't rare on 45, it's not that common on CD...

Thanks for all of the info, Ron, eriejwg and 80smusicfreak.

I had no idea that it was a different mix. Looks like I'll have to chase up a copy of the Shalamar "Best Of" CD.

Last weekend I saw this post and never realized there was a 7" remix of this song. It is like being a kid again discovering "new" music. The very next day I went to a flea market, found this little old lady selling a few 80s 45s. Sure enough this was one of them! Picked it up for 50 cents. It was a good day.

Awwww - it's GeoBlocked!
But it's just shorter with reverb right?

the db states that the commercial and dj/promo 45 runs
3:44, but there are two actual 45's with different run
times.....this should be updated in the db...

Ed here is the current comment in the database -- "dj and commercial copies of this 45 run (3:44) which is a remix and (3:58) not (4:01) as stated on the record label". Am I missing something or does this not say there are two different versions of this 45 with different running times?

The 3:44 promo 45 is an edit of the Jellybean 12" Remix. The full 12" mix is available domestically on the "15th Anniversary Edition" of the Footloose soundtrack. (It seems that the edited remix was also used as the main UK 45, and also
may have been released on later pressings of the U.S. commercial 45.)

To recreate the edit from the CD version of the 12" Remix, it's three snips and a fade:
1. Delete 31.247 seconds from the first true downbeat of the song (after the triple-snare intro) at 0:01.141 to the downbeat at 0:32.388.
2. Delete 7.814 seconds from 2:43.851 to 2:51.665. (This edit is in the midst of a stretch of repetitive instrumental vamping, so you may be able to adjust the edit point if you need, but this one felt the smoothest to me.)
3. Delete from about 3:46 to end of file, and apply a bell curve fade beginning at about 3:31, concurrent with the electric guitar lick that kicks in with the triple-snare run.

The Youtube video of the 45 being played referenced earlier in the chain is no longer available, but there are some others to be found. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwqfFzqipgQ - This is the one I used to help validate
the edits.

*edited for clarity on 10/17/21.

Hi Gene,

Sorry if the wording in my above post is confusing. The 15th Anniv. CD also
has the full 12" mix, not the edited remix. I will update for clarity when I go
back to my desktop (posting from my phone tends to break all my
formatting).
