Can anyone tell me which domestic and foreign CDs have the US single mix and the European single mix?

I paid to upgrade my service a couple days ago but I still don't have access to the updated database, so I can't even look up which domestic CDs of the past year have the US single mix, and I think there's at least one now ("Playlist"?)

There's also a foreign CD with a single mix of the song on this CD (Very Best Of):

http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:wcfpxqydldke

Does anyone have this CD and can tell whether it has the US or European single mix or album mix?

"Playlist" is the only readily available CD with the U.S. 45 version. It was also available on the "Hits" promo CD, which is very hard to find.

"Essential" contains the non-U.S. 45 version.

I can't speak to the other CD you referenced.

This is correct. "Playlist" is the ONLY commercial CD where you can find the Single Remix of Bad Boy, which was also the single version around the world. That other remix from 1992 was made for the 1992 Greatest Hits album.
There are two music videos for the song: the first, and best, one takes place at the beach but sadly it features the Album Version; the second one features the Single Remix and the cast of Cats (!).

Wow, I don't have that rare version. Nor have I ever seen it. But I'd love to. Has it appeared on any DVD release? Is it on YouTube? I always saw the cats version on VH1/MTV. Did they play this beach version at the very beginning?

The full video used to be in YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gH0dxl6yQJQ - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gH0dxl6yQJQ

But f****n' Sony took it down... and that just happened very recently.   VEVO then uploaded the video, but only the first two minutes! WTF? It's too bad because the video is very funny.

OOH! Not everything is lost... it's still in Daily Motion:

And here's the VEVO version:

Wow, I'd never seen that original video before, only the more played one. And you're right, it is funny. Too bad there hasn't been a Gloria Estefan DVD release with all her music videos, including this one. (I think I have a VHS release from years ago, but it didn't have this.)

OK, so this "Bad Boy" remix situation got very complicated - at least as far as I can tell. There's a Shep Pettibone 7" remix, which I believe is what is referred to above as the worldwide single mix - from 1986 or 87. If I understand correctly, this is on the rare Promo CD "Hits" as well as "Essential". There's a Pablo Flores 7" remix, which is referred to above as the "other remix from 1992 that was made for the 1992 Greatest Hits album". (First bit of confusion: I have the '92 GH CD and "Bad Boy" isn't even on it.)

Here's where things got really confusing for me. There is a 12" Shep Pettibone remix on Japan's "The Best Remixes". And there's a 12" Pablo Flores remix on UK's "Twelve Inch Mixes". But these 2 sound identical to me. So were there 12" mixes by both remixers? And where is the "other" one that's not on these 2 CDs? And if the 2 aforementioned CDs have the same mix, which one is correctly labeled and which is wrong (i.e. is it Flores or Pettibone on both CDs?)

As far as the "Greatest Hits" issue, I see there are import CDs that have 2 extra songs: Bad Boy (single remix) & Dr. Beat, so at least that part is cleared up :) I don't believe the US released this 16-song version, though. Just the 14-song version.

Another question for clarity - the version used in the music video for "Bad Boy" (the one with the "Cats" type of cast) - that's the version I'm most familiar with. (Saw it on VH1 on all the time). That's the US remix, right? The Pablo Flores mix? ... which is on "Playlist" and the Promo "Hits" (although unlabeled) and on the import "Greatest Hits" from 1992. BTW, that CD seems to have 2 covers - a much wider, longer picture of the "GH" cover we're familiar with, and one with her in a white dress and white background, right?

And the Shep Pettibone 7" mix is on "Essential" and "Very Best Of"/Europe?

Once this is sorted out I'd like to know if both remixers have a 12" version. According to the credits on "Twelve Inch Mixes" and "The Best Remixes", they do - but they sound identical to me.

The US single version is remixed by Shep Pettibone. It starts with the finger snaps and handclaps (no other drums), and yes, it's the one in the music video with the "cats." The US 12" (also remixed by Shep Pettibone) has an extended version that sounds similar the US single version. The version on Twelve Inch Mixes is the US 12" version. I don't know what's on The Best Remixes.

The UK Primitive Love CD from 1985 has a different extended version, which I would assume is what's on the 12" in Europe. Again, I can't confirm for sure, but it's drastically different from the US 12" version.

These are the selections I have so far:

Pablo Flores remixes:
• 6:23 Miami Sound Machine - Bad Boy (12" Version) [Miami Sound Machine - Primitive Love (EU CD) #12]
• 6:04 Miami Sound Machine - Bad Boy (Rubber-Club-Dub-Mix aka Dub Version) [unknown vinyl rip]

Shep Pettibone remixes:
• 6:13 Miami Sound Machine - Bad Boy (Club Mix) [Gloria Estefan - Twelve Inch Mixes (EU CD) #02]
• 6:44 Miami Sound Machine - Bad Boy (Dub Version) [Miami Sound Machine - Bad Boy (EU 12") #B1]
• 3:48 Miami Sound Machine - Bad Boy [single remix] [Gloria Estefan - Playlist: The Very Best of Gloria Estefan (US CD) #06]

Eric Schilling remix:
• 3:44 Miami Sound Machine - [Gloria Estefan - Greatest Hits (EU CD) #05] Bad Boy [remix]

LP version:
• 3:55 Miami Sound Machine - [Primitive Love (US CD) #04] Bad Boy

IIRC the Eric Schilling remix is sometimes mistakenly credited as a Pablo Flores remix.

Mike and Aaron, this is very helpful. But I'm looking at the "Twelve Inch Mixes" CD right now, and inside the CD booklet - for "Bad Boy" it says "Special Remix by Pablo Flores". This is where I get confused. If either of you have this CD, does your booklet say this, too? ... because you're both telling me that this CD has the Shep Pettibone 12" remix of "Bad Boy".

I don't have the CD in hand, but based on the edit history and comments on Discogs, the booklet does mistakenly say it's the Pablo Flores mix. I can just tell by how it sounds that it's one of Shep's.

Mistakes happen. A tape box may well have been mislabeled. Or maybe there was a transcription error by an intern. Who knows. Maybe someone was high as a kite somewhere along the way. There was no penalty for being wrong. Technical personnel are lucky to be getting credited on anything at all.

I have a digital rip of the Twelve Inch Mixes CD on my hard drive, so the actual disc is not in hand. So, I don't know what the booklet says, but I can say with 100% certainty that it's the Shep 12" mix that also matches a YouTube dub of the US 12" single.

Aaron & Mike, I appreciate the info you've shared. OK, so "12 Inch Mixes" import CD has the wrong credit, crediting it to Pablo Flores instead of Shep P. No wonder I couldn't tell the 2 12" remixes apart. They're credited to 2 different remixers but are both Shep on the CDs I have. I'll be ordering a CD that actually has the 12" by Pablo Flores, which I now believe I've never heard. I also just ordered the European version of GH to get the 3:44 Eric Schilling remix. It's ironic that the "Essential Gloria Estefan" CD credits "Bad Boy" as the "single remix" when it's not. Do you - or anyone here - know - Were these shorter remixes by Shep Pettibone or Eric Schilling the official single mix in Europe?

So I believe that credit for #2 is in error, based on what Mike (mjb50) said above. I came across a lot of credits for different Bad Boy mixes on some listing in Discogs. I'll find it and post it here. It's very helpful. I really like this song and thought I had all the mixes, but I don't have at least 2. So I've now ordered them by ordering the European 16-song version of Greatest Hits and the EU version of Primitive Love.

Everything below is from Discogs, except bracketed text is mine, to help clarify:

CBS affiliated labels in this era did not reliably update copyright years and used album versions as a reference, so many of the releases say 1985 on them even though they were actually released in 1986.

This is also a very confusing release due to some mispressed and mislabeled issues, similar durations, and wrong labels. It is a bit complicated to define which version is which. Even YouTube videos are unreliable and sometimes mistitled.

There are 7 different versions:

1. Album Version 3:53
Miami Sound Machine - Primitive Love

2. [U.S.] Single Remix by Shep Pettibone 3:50
(released 1986)
Available on CD for example here:
Gloria Estefan - Playlist: The Very Best Of Gloria Estefan

3. [Non-U.S.] Single Remix by Eric Shilling 3:45
(appears on the 1992 Greatest Hits Album [European version])
Gloria Estefan - Greatest Hits

4. Extended Mix by Shep Pettibone 6:11

5. Dub Mix by Shep Pettibone 6:43
The Netherland 12 issues with the Shep Pettibone Mixes has grey labels:
Miami Sound Machine - Bad Boy (Remix)
Times of A- & B-Side are interchanged.

6. Extended Mix by Pablo Flores 6:19

7. Dub Mix by by Pablo Flores 6:08
The Netherland 12 issues with the Pablo Flores Mixes has dark blue labels:
Miami Sound Machine - Bad Boy (Special Dance Mix)

But there could be even mispressed copies in these last 2 issues, so pay attention! Here are some hints to know which version is which:

1. The Album Version plays 3:53.
It starts with "halftime" drums and the first 2 seconds sound as if the drummer thought he played a wrong note. The entire versions sounds a bit slow.

2. The Single Remix by Eric Shilling plays ~3:45.
The drums start uptempo with the first break after about 10 seconds. Then the trumpet part starts. The sound is quite similar to the Shep Pettibone Mix but has no tambourine.

3. The Single Remix by Shep Pettibone plays ~3:50.
Starts with an open solo hi-hat. Then followed by snipped fingers and handclaps. After 12 seconds the funky guitar and the synthesizer come in.

4. Extended Mix by Shep Pettibone plays ~6:11.
The Mix starts with snipped fingers and handclaps. After 12 seconds the funky guitar and the synthesizer come in.

5. The Dub Mix by Shep Pettibone plays ~6:43.
Starts with "Bad Boy" a-cappella solo in an echo-sound-effect.

6. The Extended Mix by Pablo Flores plays ~6:19.
The first seconds feature drums, bass-guitar and handclaps together. After about 11 seconds the synthesizer starts followed at about 20 seconds by a funky guitar. At about 30 seconds a "christmas" sounding bell comes in.

7. The Dub Mix by by Pablo Flores plays ~6:08.
This version starts with "Christmas" sounding synth-bell (like from a church) followed at about 11 seconds by synth-pad.

Oh and if anyone wants to see the Discogs page where this info came from, it's:

And the only remix that remains "vinyl-only" is the Pablo Flores Dub.
All the rest can be found in different CD releases.

Does anyone know who mixed "Bad Boy" on the album version? The CD booklet doesn't say. But maybe someone here knows.

I was recently going through songs on my phone, and for "Bad Boy" I have 5 versions, one of which is labeled (Euro 12" remix) (Pablo Flores) (3:56). But when I listened to it, it seems to be the album version. I also have (Euro 12" remix) (Pablo Flores) (6:23), which clearly is one of the 12" versions. But I wouldn't have labeled the shorter the version the way it's labeled if I had shortened it. (I have my own labeling system). So at first, I was unsure what this version was, but as far as I can tell, it's just the album version.

I received the 16-track European version of GH which has a single mix of "Bad Boy". Turns out I didn't need this, as it has a mix I already have- what I believe is the Eric Schilling '92 mix.

What's been throwing me off is that there's an album release called "The Very Best of Gloria Estefan" on Spotify, Pandora, etc. (also on CD - Epic/Europe) that lists "Bad Boy (Shep Pettibone 7" Remix)", but listening to it, it doesn't start with finger snaps & claps, but with drums on the downbeat. I believe this is the Eric Schilling mix, wrongly labeled. As was pointed out by Mike regarding the 12" mixes, sometimes these credits are wrong, and it looks like the 7" mix was wrongly credited on this release.

I haven't yet received the EU version of the "Primitive Love" CD with the 12" of Bad Boy that's on there. So now that I have all the 7" mixes, I'm going to summarize what short versions are where - I'm going to re-listen to everything now and report back.

BTW, as far as I can tell, it doesn't appear that there's a Pablo Flores 7" remix or an Eric Schilling 12" remix.

Here is my summary of "Bad Boy" (short versions). Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Album version (original mix by Eric Schilling) 3:55
- Primitive Love

Shep Pettibone 7" Remix (intro includes finger snaps) = US single version 3:47
-Playlist: Very Best of Gloria Estefan
-Hits (promotional CD, US)

Eric Schilling 7" Remix (starts with full drums) = non-US single version 3:44
-Essential (& Essential 3.0)
-Greatest Hits (European version)
-Very Best Of (European import) but wrongly credited as Shep Pettibone 7" Remix

On my first-pressing promo vinyl LP credits are "Engineered & Mixed by Eric Schilling" (and 'thanks to Pablo Flores for his mixes of "Conga" & "Primitive Love"') so it's a safe bet to claim Eric mixed the original LP version of "Bad Boy".

I gave my summary of "Bad Boy" (short versions) 3 posts ago. Now that I have the European version of "Primitive Love" on CD, here's my summary of the extended versions on CD:

Shep Pettibone Club Mix - 6:11
-Twelve Inch Mixes (UK import)
-The Best Remixes (Japan import)

Pablo Flores 12" Remix - 6:20
-Primitive Love (European version)

I believe there are no other CDs (imports or domestic) that contain extended versions of this song, which clearly means no extended versions have ever been released on US CD.

Incidentally, this European version of the "Primitive Love" CD not only skips listing the remixers, but on the booklet and backside of jewel case it doesn't even indicate that the additional 4 songs are extended versions. For instance, it just says "Bad Boy", "Primitive Love" (etc.) again.

Also, while many of Miami Sound Machine/Gloria Estefan hits have Spanish-language versions, I can find none for their breakthrough hit "Conga", which surprises me.

The Shep Pettibone Remix also is on the multi-disc comp Dance Masters: Shep Pettibone.

The Shep Pettibone Dub is on the out of print 2011 compilation Dance Classics Pop Edition Vol. 5.

The now-defunct reissue label Vibe On actually were releasing an amazing 2 CD deluxe of Primitive Love in 2017 with most of the remixes from the album and other bonus tracks, but apparently Gloria Estefan's camp squashed it at the last minute for reasons unknown and it's never been mentioned for another reissue since.

That's a shame that Gloria Estefan's camp squashed the release. I had never heard about it but it sounds like it would have been great. I wonder if there were any unreleased tracks that would have been included.

That's interesting to know about the Shep Pettibone releases on those CDs. Are those domestic or import?

Dance Masters: Shep Pettibone is a 2021 UK release while Dance Classics is one of the best long running compilations of '80s 12 inch remixes ever, with over 70 discs released over a 15 year period ending in 2013.  They're all Netherlands releases.

The Vibe On release of Primitive Love was to have contained soundtrack contributions Hot Summer Nights (from Top Gun) and Suave (from Cobra), as well as spanish language tracks Hablas De Mi, No Me Vuelvo a Enamorar and the spanish language version of Mucho Money.  Four remix edits, a demo of Falling in Love, eight remixes, an instrumental of Conga and three dub mixes rounded it out.

In 2017, this album should re-released, but the then the production was stopped:

"The label has confirmed the unfortunate news that the title has been indefinitely delayed, as a result of Gloria and Emilio Estefan wishing to concentrate on the recording of a new Gloria Estefan album.  Our friends at Vibe On have written, in part: "Until very recently, the Estefans were working with Sony Music Entertainment in order to help Vibe On make this deluxe edition as exciting as possible. Unfortunately for us, and for you, their fans, they have decided to temporarily halt the CD's release in order to focus all attention on Gloria Estefan's upcoming album for Sony Latin"

I was working with Sony/Legacy on a Complete Albums Box Set (including the first 7 early MSM albums that have never been out on CD), with bonus cuts - and the same thing happened. We were speaking with the Estefan's manager, and he said the Estefans would like to hold off on the release because they wanted to focus on the upcoming album by Gloria. By the time that came out, Legacy stopped doing Complete Albums boxed sets. So it never came out.

As for the track listing of the above 2-CD set that never came out, thanks for sharing this, Edogak2000, and it looks like it would have been great. Too bad they didn't list who did the mixes for "Bad Boy" Extended Dance Mix & Extended Dub Mix, previously unreleased. I wonder if they came out on other CDs. Hard to know but probably not. Obviously not the extended remixes by Shep Pettibone or Palbo Flores as they're already listed on this.

The other track that I found really interesting is "Conga (Strong-Conga Remix)". I never knew about this remix, but I just checked it out on YouTube and I love it as much as the original Conga mix & extended remix, if not more.

I checked the article that mentions the tracklist from website The Second Disc and which releases it pulls from.  The "Bad Boy" Extended Dance Mix is listed as coming from the Japan release of Primitive Love and that is in fact the Pablo Flores mix, so there's no unheard mystery mix, it would just have been the same track twice if actually released, which is sloppy but I've seen happen multiple times on other sets.

The "Bad Boy" Extended Dub Mix is almost certainly mistitled and is either the Shep "Dub Version" dub or the Pablo "Rubber-Club-Dub-Mix" dub.  My money is on the latter since the Shep dub was already released on Dance Classics Pop Edition Vol. 5.

BTW, the Conga (Stronga-Conga Remix) is also known as Conga (European Remix) and it was only released on CD once as a European mini-single in 1989.  I don't have it yet cause it's a bit pricey for a 2 track single (also contains the more common Dance Mix).

Yes, I saw that the "Stronga-Conga Remix" was also known as the "European Remix", and you're right, I found that it only came out once on an import CD single. It looked like it might have been 3" from the picture; wasn't sure, but I'm glad you confirmed that. I ordered it today. Looking at amazon, discogs (and maybe ebay), I only saw a total of 3 for sale: pricey, more pricey, and ridiculously pricey. With so few on the market, and me liking the mix as much as I do, I ordered the least of the pricey ones.

As far as I know, regarding the Primitive Love songs, "Conga" doesn't have a Spanish-language version unlike "Words Get in the Way" ("No Me Vuelvo a Enamorar"), and "Mucho Money".

With "Conga" being the song that broke MSM worldwide, I'd think, if any song, that one would have a Spanish-language version - especially to appeal the countries where Spanish is the main language - but it certainly looks like they didn't record such a version.

And as for the singles from "Primitive Love", 3 out of 4 don't have Spanish-language versions.
