Thank you for the new run time info, ed. Sometimes there are discrepancies between my run time info and others. Then we may be able to encounter any new findings for different pressings. I have learned here that there are two or more pressings of U.S commercial 45s. So I have clocked some 45s of multiple possessions with the same turn table. For example, "KENNY LOGGINS-Danger Zone 3:32 & 3:33", "SHEENA EASTON-Modern Girl 3:31 & 3:32", "OUTLAWS-(Ghost) Riders In The Sky 3:36 & 3:37", "TOTO-I Won't Hold You Back 4:34 & 4:35" etc.

Are there mix differences between the 45 and LP? The db indicates LP and 45 "versions." Any info would be appreciated!

bumping this one back up. There are two distinct 45
mixes. I think one is a US edit of the LP and the other
is an an edit of the New York Mix. Both are about the
same duration. It's much more pumped and jazzed up
with horns etc. This is the version I heard most in the
NY area back in the 80's. It's also the version used in
the video. The question I have is there a way to find
the New York Mix edit on cd? The quality of the pressing
on vinyl is rather awful, at least the import 12"record
I purchased. Anyone able to shed some light on this?

Are you saying that some 45s are pressed with a remix while others are
not? Is there any way to distinguish between the pressings?

To my knowledge, the New York Mix and single version
are found on non US 12" records. The stock US 45 is
an edited LP version. Both single mixes are listed as
4:03 on most vinyl pressings US or abroad (various 45
and 12" pressings) (some list as 3:58) and are listed
as being remixed by Steve Thompson & Michael Barbiero.
However, there are definitely two different mixes. I
was only familiar with the jazzier/pumped up version
from the official video and NY radio. You can hear the
difference especially in the first 20 seconds of each.
I don't see any evidence on discogs of another US
promo 45 with this mix nor have I found it on any
compilation discs. I own the US stock 45 which is the
lp edit. I can't be certain which mix is on the promo
45 because I don't own it and they are about the same
length. I'm curious which version other radio markets
play during '86-87.

When time permits, I'll look through my promo 45s to see if there's a second promo with the remix. On Discogs, the promo and stock 45s both have a label matrix of ZSS 175492, which would indicate the mixes on them are the same. These 45s also say "Additional production and mixed [sic] by Steve Thompson & Michael Barbiero." Although it doesn't say "remixed," the "additional production" note makes me wonder what "additional" stuff was done to it. Based on what's been reported here, the answer is that it's only editing of the LP mix/version. To confuse matters even more, both the New York Mix on the US & UK 12" and the "Single Mix" on the UK 12" have the same credit as the US 45: "(Additional production and) mixed by Steve Thompson & Michael Barbiero."
I do have the US promo 12", so again, when time permits, I can play the "Single Version" on Side B to see if it's any different from the 45.

The https://www.discogs.com/Psychedelic-Furs-Heartbreak-Beat/release/2365205 - US promo 7" on Discogs has a note saying there are different mixes on each side.
I, too, have the US promo 12", but I don't have any 7" to compare it to.

Sadly, my US promo 45 has the same LP edit version on
both sides, irrespective of what the Discogs entry
claims. Matrix numbers are also the same.

Thank you for the addition input. That's interesting
that the added note on Discogs about dual versions does
not reflect what your promo 45 has Andy. I wonder if
there were two different promo 45s with the same matrix
number. I would think the video version was serviced
to major market radio since that was the version on all
chr and rock stations in NY at that time. From my
research, the only known source for the video version is
the import 12" New York Mix. I'd still like to find
this version on cd if it exists.

What I would believe to be the 'remixed 45 version' of "Heartbreak Beat" is available on the Warner Special Products various artists comp On the Edge from the
year 2000. On that compilation, the track runs 4:05 with outro silence, and is either an edit of the 12" Extended Mix (New York Mix) or a short remix from the same
sessions as the 12" Extended Mix (I have not verified that the short version can be extracted from the long, if you follow.)

thank you for that info! Do you have that compilation?
If the version on the disc matches the official video
found on youtube, its a match.

Hi Rick - I have the comp. I will do a little comparison to the video and report back.

Ugh. Mass confusion ensuing...
Check this out: The version on On the Edge does not match the Video Version exactly, due to some horn overdubs present in the video that are not on the On the Edge version. I kept on digging
though, and found that the version used in the video is a match to the "Single Mix" from the UK 12" Single, as per https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfVTuJwQ39E - this Youtube video , as you already
surmised.
Additionally, I found a https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdbnlitnkKw - different video of a U.S. 45 that plays the exact same remix as found on On the Edge. So, it seems to me that the U.S.
remixed 45 version and the Video Version aka "Single Mix" are similar but not identical mixes, so the compilation contains a correct 45 Version, but not specifically the Video Version you're looking for.
Now I am considering the possibility that the UK 45 could match the 12" "Single Mix" from the UK, and if that is the case then if there are compilation appearances of "Heartbreak Beat" that originate in the
UK, they could be the 'Video Version'. Of course, this is complete conjecture on my part.
Oh well - sorry for getting your hopes up, but I definitely learned something about the available mixes of this song today, LOL.

By the way, my promo 45 with both sides
the LP edit says it's mixed by Steve
Thompson & Michael Barbiero. I don't
believe it is - it sounds more like
English producer Chris Kimsey mixed it.
Thompson & Barbiero are both native New
Yorkers which is probably why the remix is
called 'NY Mix'. The remix does sound like
their work.
Pure conjecture on my part; does anyone
else concur?

That sounds plausible to me. Trying to find the video
version/ny mix edit on cd is challenging because the
remix credits and track length are the same. I'm
curious which version is considered the hit version in
the U.S.

What needs to be edited from the US LP version to create the non-remixed 45?

I didn't do a detailed A/B comparison, but I quickly gave a listen to both my promo 45 and promo 12" single, and there are obvious differences between the two formats. The promo 45 has a label matrix of ZSS 175492 and has the same version on both sides (I played each side to confirm). This version sounds like an edit of the LP mix, which is consistent with what others here have reported. The promo 12" has a label matrix of XSS 175494 on the side labeled "Single Version," and this version is a different mix that sounds like the one appearing on the CD compilation On The Edge.

I have both files of the Single Mix and the 45 Edit which
the 45 Edit is from the On The Edge compilation. I saw it
mentioned in one of the comments before that the
difference is the horns at the front of it in the single
mix.

Are the edits for the LP mix the same edits used to create
the 45 version on On The Edge?

The LP version does not have the kick drum on every beat. So right off the bat you can tell if you have an LP edit.
The US promo 12" with the Album Version on one side and Single Version on the other is indeed the album version and the US 45 version.
The US 45 is not an edit of the LP version because it has a kick drum on every beat. Congas start at 0:17 right before the lyrics. The break at 2:25 has no kick drum but extra percussion as compared to the UK 45.
The UK 45 & video version also has the kick drum on every beat and jumps right into horns and congas at the start. The kick drum is plainly heard in the break at 2:25.
The version on On the Edge is the US 45 version.
The version on https://www.discogs.com/release/3114133-Various-87-Hits-Out - 87 Hits Out (Australian CD) is the UK 45 & video version.
I am still curious to know what is on the US promo 45(s)!
I PM'd the submitter of the one on Discogs to confirm the versions on it differ and to see if he can help figure out what they are.

According to AndrewChouffi on page 1 of this thread, the
US promo 45 contains the LP edit.

But that was in response to promojunkie saying the US 45 contains an LP edit, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdbnlitnkKw - which is incorrect , according to my research. I am trying to find out whether an LP edit actually exists.

Guess I'm confused then because aaronk, who owns both the
promo 45 and 12", also indicated on the last page that the
promo 45 sounds like an edit of the LP version.
