This song isn't included on the outstanding greatest hits disc, The Heart Of Rock & Roll: The Best Of Huey Lewis And The News (Chrysalis Holland 0946 3 21934 2 1), which contains the true 45 version of "I Want A New Drug".

So I was pleased to find it on Rock On - Everybody Have Fun Tonight: 1987 (Madacy MSD-37205 RO-2-5187, 1998, runs 3:52).

That is, until I actually listened to it. It sounds like the mix is missing a whole lot of elements, like ALL the background vocals and all the lead guitar parts! The chorus of the song is almost completely instrumental - yikes!

Obviously, this is not the 45 version. Does anyone have "I Know What I Like" on this or any other CD that can confirm what this mix is? It sounds like a mistake, and it would be nice to know where the mistake came from.

It's a "work vocal" of the track. I have it on another CD also. It is terrible.

I believe the 45 was the same as the LP version, so the hit is available on the 'Fore!' album.

The 45 is almost the same as the LP, but there is one very short edit in the middle that cuts out about four seconds. I believe this is detailed in another thread somewhere on the board.

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for letting me know about the slight edit; I never noticed.

Here are editing instructions to recreate the 45 from the LP version. I used the original Fore CD as my source; it sounds excellent and it should be pretty cheap.

Keep 0:00.0 to 2:40.5 of the LP version.
To find the edit point, first find the downbeat that begins the break. The downbeat falls at the end of the cymbal fill, at about 2:39. Count beats: If that downbeat is beat number "1", then the edit occurs at beat number "4", at 2:40.5.

Remove the 8 beats from 2:40.5 to 2:44.9. These 8 beats effectively cut the guitar break in half. Yes, you just cut out a whopping 4.4 seconds.
Keep 2:44.9 to 3:59.8 (end) of the LP version.

You mixdown will run 3:55.4 with outro silence, about 3:53 without outro silence, and will have one edit in it at 2:40.5.

Afterthought: The true 45 runs 3:51 and 108.4 BPM throughout. The Fore CD runs 108.2 BPM throughout. You won't notice the difference.

According to the database the version on Greatest Hits seems to more closely match the timing of the 45. Can someone who owns this CD check if this version is the single edit? If it's not is it just an early fade?

On the Greatest Hits CD the guitar break starts and ends before the 2:40 mark. Huey picks up the vocals at 2:43.

Has anyone done a side by side comparison of the 45 and the Greatest Hits CD? Unless I edited the Greatest Hits version and didn't take notes, to me they sound the same.

Just wanted to revisit this one, as "I Know What I Like" on my copy of
Greatest Hits (downloaded from iTunes five years ago) also has the edit
in the guitar break which would seem to match the 45 version rather than
the LP version. The database shows only the LP version is available on CD.

You are correct, the Greatest Hits cd does contain the 45 edit of "I Know What I Like"
