Pat,
For your listing for the Jelly Beans, you reference that some versions have handclaps overdubbed (the mono versions) and some (I assume) without handclaps (the stereo versions). Which one is the single version? |

| I'm not Pat but I'd say it's a pretty good bet the mono version with handclaps is the single version, given that the vast majority of 45s released in the mid-'60s were still being mixed in mono. |

As it turns out, my vinyl 45 does not have the handclaps. It is entirely possible that there were two different pressings of the 45 but as I say mine does not have the handclaps. ------------- Top 40 Music On Compact Disc Moderator |

Well, I guess it's a good thing I didn't put any money down on my "pretty good bet"!
Pat, is your vinyl 45 in mono? If so, it's odd to me that the overdubbed handclaps show up on all mono CD appearances but not on the original mono 45... unless of course there's another 45 pressing, as you suggest. |

I am not 100% sure on this, but I *believe* the first issuance of the electronic-stereo-with-added-stereo-handclaps version was on the various artists LP 'Incense & Oldies'. I don't believe there was a contemporaneous single or album release with handclaps. The first "real stereo" version was that excellent Taragon package 'The Very Best Of Red Bird & Blue Cat Records'. To the more well-informed people out there, please correct me in this thread if I'm wrong!! Thanks, Andy |

Actually, my question was around the mono version with handclaps. It doesn't surprise me that the mono and stereo versions vary, but it's unusual for recordings of this vintage to have two distinct mono mixes. Pat confirmed that his mono 45 lacks handclaps, so I was wondering if anyone came across a mono 45 with handclaps in their collection. It's amazing what people on this board dig up! Dave |

What I neglected to point out is that I *believe* that the mono versions with handclaps on CD were once a dub from that 'Incense & Oldies' comp, mono'd out... Andy |

| I think the hand claps were added AFTER the "exclusive" rights to the Red Bird masters (including the Shangra-las masters which had already been sold to Mercury) were sold by George Goldner to a couple of labels including Musicor. An off key piano was added to "People Say" by the Dixie Cups too, these additional instruments and hand claps might have been added by Musicor. I don't believe there was a hand claps version released on Red Bird on the Jelly Beans track, but I could be wrong. |

frank was kind enough to send me two stereo files without
the hand-clap overdubs and after comparing them to my vinyl 45 they are the same, kind of.....first, you'll need to edit off the first 1.4 seconds of the intro and start to song on the downbeat after the intro....then you'll need to fade for 0:14 from 2:29 to 2:43.....the actual vinyl 45 runs 2:43 even though the label says 2:40...this 45 run time info s/b added to the db.....if anyone needs a copy of my re-creation, please send me an email or pm....THANKS, FRANK ------------- edtop40 |

I note that the info supplied by Ed in 2014 is not
indicated in the database. If I may elaborate, the only CD with a stereo version I have is Taragon's Very Best Of Red Bird/Blue Cat Records. This version starts with the group's male member, Charles Thomas, singing "Poom-poom, poom-poom, poom-poom". (The music starts during the final 'poom'). The first two 'Poom- poom's are not on the 45, on which there is only the final 'Poom-poom'. |

Not necessarily, because, as was discussed earlier in the thread, the original mono single mix did not have the handclaps. |

I found a listing of that CD on Archive.org with sound samples, and the handclaps are there. Sounds like the database needs to be updated to indicate that the CD "Jelly Beans and Friends" has the handclaps. Wow! And all this time I thought the handclaps were added by the 'Insence & Oldies' compiler in 1968 to make it seem stereo. The handclaps on the 1965 mono Red Bird comp seem the same... Andy |

I do wonder if there could be some 45s out there with the handclaps, but I haven't found any so far. At the moment, it looks like the handclaps version may be an LP Version. |
