I have the vinyl 45 for this (MJJ/Epic 77864), with the song listed as "(LP
Version (Radio Edit))." I played it against the LP version from From The
Bottom Up,
that I downloaded from ITunes, and the 45 is just an early
fade of the LP version. Is this true of the CD single and cassette single as
well? Is this a case of one of Pat's version vs. length distinctions? The 45
timed out to 3:42 (listed as 3:43).

Paul, we received in to the station two different promo CD singles for this song, and here are the details:

Brownstone-"If You Love Me" (ESK 6606)
1-LP Version (Radio Edit) (listed 3:43; actual 3:42)
2-Soft Touch Mix (Radio Edit) (listed 3:44; actual 3:43)
3-Instrumental (listed 3:45; actual 3:41)
4-A Cappella (listed 3:42; actual 3:41)

Brownstone-"If You Love Me" (Remixes) (ESK 6889)
1-Smooth Out Remix Radio Edit (listed 4:13; actual 4:12)
2-If You Jazz Me Remix Radio Edit (listed 4:13; actual 4:20)
3-Characters Funk Remix Radio Edit (listed & actual 4:13)
4-Smooth Out Remix Extended Version (listed 5:45; actual 5:46)
5-If You Jazz Me Remix Extended Version (listed & actual 5:45)
6-Characters Funk Remix Extended Version (listed 5:45; actual 5:43)

It appears that Cut 1 of the first promo CD single matches up with your vinyl 45, Paul.

Where on earth were you able to get Brownstone on a 7" single in 1995? I had to order all of my 90s 45's from the US, here in Canada. They have been extinct here since March 1990.

What I'm really asking is, did stores stock 45s in the US?

By the way, I was able to get Brownstone on a 12" single though.

I got my 45 through the Collectables catalog in 1996. They had a decent
assortment of 90's hits on 45 (Culture Beat, Snow, Marcy Playground and
others).

I don't believe "If You Love Me" was released on a 45 when it first became a hit. I only know it to exist on the 45 Paul mentions (MJJ/Epic 77864) as the B-side of the follow-up, "Grapevyne".

Jody, the last Top 40 single I purchased in a Canadian record store (and the last one I ever saw in one) was Basia's "Cruising For Bruising".

My last three 45s purchased at a mall store (Sam's in Stoney Creek) were:

Celine Dion - If There Was Any Other Way
Cowboy Junkies - The Sun Comes Up; It's Tuesday Morning
Midnight Oil - Blue Sky Mine

(sniff....)

My last imported 45 was Cher's "Believe in 1999.

My recollection is that most major chain record stores in the U.S. stopped selling 45s around 1989 or 1990, around the same time that major label titles ceased to be pretty much universally available on 45. (What was available on 45 after that point and what wasn't could be a whole separate thread...)

After 1990, the availability of 45s was spotty, especially if you were outside a major metropolitan area. You might encounter an independent store/chain here and there who still sold them, or a vinyl specialty shop, or a used record store that ordered small quantities of new releases on vinyl. Otherwise, mail order was the only way to go.
