ok.....i don't know why they do these kind of things.....but it's very annoying......my commercial 45 of the milli vanilli song "girl i'm gonna miss you" issued as arista 9870, states a run time of 4:19 but like abagon notes above, really runs 4:23...that's not a big deal because we see that often enough....what really gets me going is that the version found on the promo cd single has the oboe break from 3:16 to 3:23 in the wrong channel......the 45 has it in the left channel while the promo cd has it in the right channel.....i will pose this question to our illustrious panel....why would they go through trouble of doing this.....the responses i'm sure will be numerous....... ------------- edtop40 |

Could it just be that the channels are reversed??
But I share your frustration, especially with the Milli Vanilli singles. There are at least three different mixes out there of "All or Nothing" and at least three different mixes of "Dreams to Remember." Very aggravating. |

It's just a L/R channel reversal, not a new mix. If I
remember correctly, most, if not all, of the tracks on the Hits That Shook The World promo sampler have their L/R channels reversed. It's a known issue with the Milli Vanilli hits. |

hey crap....since you made that comment i will have to review all the tracks from that promo cd compilation again for compliance........but, btw......the ONLY difference regarding the channel switching is during that one segment from 3:16 to 3:23, the oboe break.....the rest of the track in identical.....so if your theory is accurate, the entire song's channels would be reversed, no....i will review all 5 tracks from that promo cd after my holiday vacation....enjoy the great weather all.... ------------- edtop40 |

So...
I find Milli Vanilli's discography to be very confusing for an artist that came out in 1988. On my version of the full length CD "Girl You Know It's True," the song "I'm Gonna Miss You" (titled that way) is listed as 4:19, but runs 4:23. My version is ARCD-8592 like what's listed in the database, has a 1988/1989 copyright date, and has US designations all over it, such as stating "Manufactured in USA for Arista Records" (so it's not an import). The problem is that the database says that the version of "I'm Gonna Miss You" on Arista 8592 runs 3:57 like the original vinyl LP. Pretty sure that my 4:23 version is the 45 version which appears to have been switched on to the CD at some point. Were there 2 pressings under the same catalog number? All of the other Milli Vanilli "hits" on this CD seem to match what's listed in the db. |

I have four different pressings of the Girl You Know It's True CD.
I found four different suffixes for the matrix number, which I've detailed below. I didn't include the various record club pressings, which all match one of the four. Wow. Well, mine has a 4 in the matrix number so that's consistent with
what you're saying. It's the only one that has the 45 version of "I'm Gonna Miss You," it seems. But Ron, if I'm reading your chart right,, are you saying that the original pressing has a 6:28 version of "Baby Don't Forget My Number"? That's not in the db either and I don't know that I'm familiar with it. Was that version also on the vinyl LP or the cassette? I knew the Milli Vanilli catalog was confusing but this is starting to hit next level. |

I hadn't dug into what was on the LP. I have a copy with "RE-1" in the matrix number of the A-side (not on the B-side), so there's more than one LP pressing out there. The RE-1 printed times roughly match the "-2" CD pressing, except that "More Than You'll Ever Know" has a printed time of 5:30 on the RE-1 LP. I'd be curious to know if that 6:28 CD album version of "Baby Don't
Forget My Number" has appeared anywhere else. The lead 12" version was the Extended Subway Mix and runs about 7:35 and the other versions on the 12" single are all under 6 minutes. Discogs doesn't seem to show a 6:28 version (or anything close) on any of the dozens of US and foreign releases for that song. |

I have a Canadian compilation called Big Hits '89 (PolyTel, 1989), which featured the LP versions on all 14 of its songs. It included the 6:28 version of "Baby Don't Forget My Number", which rendered it pretty much useless for this song. The 6:28 LP version is a slightly shorter version of the Extended Subway Mix. My Canadian vinyl LP has the 6:28 version - was the "hit" version ever pressed onto the LP - Canadian or US? I agree with the track being "useless". I quickly ran out and bought the 45 when I heard what was on the LP. Radio rarely played the LP version, although I'm sure I heard it on "Open House Party" one time - with John Garabedian even mentioning how much different it was from the 45 version. |

I don't know how exactly many mixes and remixes and edits exist for "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" but I'd imagine that there are several, which seems to be typical of this era in pop music. I have a vinyl set of one of the "Casey's Top 40" shows from 1989 (August 26-27) and it contains an edit of "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" that I assume is the single edit but I'm not sure. My CD pressing of the "Girl You Know It's True" album (which is a Columbia House club pressing) contains the 4:24 length "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" (as it's written on the disc... on the sleeves it is "I'm Gonna Miss You") which has one sax solo near the end before repeating the pre-chorus and chorus. The edit on my "Casey's Top 40" show has an instrumental section with a different sax solo between the first chorus and the 2nd verse and the pre-chorus and chorus section is not repeated at the end. Instead the song fades out on a second sax solo after the last chorus (same sax solo on the CD I have). Here are the details from the two promo CDs I have that contain the song:

Album Version (listed & actual 3:58) The Single Version does not have a sax solo between the first chorus and second verse. The Album Version does have a sax solo before the second verse. According to Ron's post above, the Album Version appears on 3 out of the 4 pressings he owns (note the run time of 3:57 on all of them). "Maximum Milli Vanilli/The Hits That Shook The World" (ASCD-9930) 1. All Or Nothing (listed 3:15; actual 3:16) 2. Blame It On The Rain (Single Version) (listed 4:06; actual 4:08) 3. Blame It On The Rain (Album Version) (listed 4:19; actual 4:17) 4. Girl I'm Gonna Miss You (listed 4:19; actual 4:24) 5. Baby Don't Forget My Number (listed 4:00; actual 4:02) 6. Sounded more like a soprano sax to me based on the
"brassier" timbres of some of the higher notes but I suppose it could be an oboe. They were obviously going for that Kenny G. sound there.
