I actually heard this track on terrestrial radio and then 5 minutes later on sat. radio. It's always the LP version that is slightly different from the what I believe is called the "clay" or "copper" mix (it's the lead track on the cd single). Does anyone know if a promo was released with the LP version or an LP edit? On the album it mixes into the second track.

Not too familiar with the LP version, but an amazon.com review claims that the "Clay" mix has the full ending that segues into "Terrible Lie" on the album. I believe the video also uses the "Clay" mix (unless it's the album version and those two are the same or very similar).

By the way, the "Slate" mix is the lead track on my CD single, and it fades out at the end.

OK it must be the "slate" mix then. I know that on the single it ends just like the album version and is edited from the album so it does not segue. The only notable difference from the album version is that the album version starts out with all of those typewriter sound effects rather than trent singing the chorus.

Well, I would say that you can use the ending of the "Clay" mix to tack onto the LP version, if you're trying to make a non-segued LP version.

Which is considered the 'hit' version of this track? TM Studios lists an album version and a non-descriptive track, running about 45 seconds shorter.

My vote is for the "Clay" (aka video version) or "Slate" mix (lead track on the CD single). When I programmed my college station, we played the "Slate" mix. Granted, many alternative stations today probably play the album version, but that's probably because they don't have the CD single in their music library.

Why don't radio stations hunt down the singles the way we do?
