I have just noticed that my promo 45 for this song has the same, listed (3:30), actual (3:29) version that appears on both my commercial 45 and all current database CDs on one side of it. However, the other side of my promo 45 (also stereo - WEA was still issuing at least some stereo/mono promos in 1983) has a shorter version on it, with a listed time of (3:14) and an actual time of (3:13). Other than the listed time difference, there was no other label notation (such as "short version", "fade" or "edit"), causing me to previously overlook it. At first listen, the shorter promo 45 side simply sounds like an early fade, but I will soon be shooting out a research dub to Aaron K & Todd, for confirmation of this fact. A final note: On my promo 45, the labels are accidently reversed, so the longer, commercial 45 side appears on the listed (3:14) side of the DJ single, and vice versa.

the short version edits out the final verse of the tune, so it is an edit, not an early fade...
My promo 45 also has the labels reversed.

A quick check thru my collection (my 45s are filed chronologically), Warner-distributed labels (Warner Bros, Sire, Geffen) were pretty much all mono/stereo promo singles thru the end of '83 (with the exception of long/short versions). Elektra & Atlantic divisions seemed to phase out mono versions mid-year.
BTW, add mine to the list of promo copies with reversed labels.

My copy has the labels on the correct sides, but the mismatched label and deadwax matrix numbers made this one ripe for reversed label syndrome. On my copy, the (3:14) side's printed matrix number is ACA 19900DJS, but the deadwax is stamped "...ACA-1990-SDJ-V1-SR1."
The (3:30) side's printed matrix is ACA 1990S, and that's what was originally etched in the deadwax. But that was scratched out and replaced with "...ACA-1990-SDJ-SR2," with the letter "J" etched backwards!
Was there something extra in the egg nog at Artisan mastering that day? ;)
UPDATE In revisiting this one for those wondering where the edits are, I discovered I have two copies of the DJ 45: the vinyl, Specialty-pressed copy I mentioned in detail just above, and a styrene, Allied-pressed DJ 45, which has the same reversed-label syndrome that Jim, cmmmbase and Hykker mentioned upthread. Both copies were mastered in L.A. at Artisan, but they're clearly sourced from different cuttings (the Allied pressing's sides end with an "SHI" deadwax suffix, which probably stands for "side hiccup inversion.")
As for the edit points, I wasn't able to edit the longer side to match the short one. Gene's hunch below was on the money: the portion removed begins at 2:06, before the word "right," and ends at 2:22, just before the beat preceding the word "your."
Here's the problem: Sammy begins rolling out the "R" of the word "right" a bit earlier than the beat. Editing it to just before that point leaves a gap between the end of the guitar and the word "right." On the 3:14 edited side, that guitar on the break segues right into the word "right," with no audible gap. It sounds like they muted Sammy's isolated vocal track on the multis before "right," and then made the edit.

Can anybody tell me the "from / to" points in the 3:15 edit?
My suspicion is that it's going to be something like 2:06 to 2:22, but I'd love some confirmation from somebody who has access to the DJ edit.
Thanks!

Bringing this one back as editing points for recreating
the promo 45 were never disclosed.

Thanks for the update,John. I tried the very same edit
and it, indeed was choppy vs. very smooth sounding on
the DJ 45. The only solution is to paste that section of
the DJ 45 into the digital file.
