Wondering if this is a CD debut for "What Am I Crying For" and if anyone has an idea on CD quality...

John, I have this one as well, as "What Am I Living For" has always been a personal fave. This one sounds pretty good to my ears, but I have read somewhere on the 'Net that the Aussie label who issued this comp couldn't obtain a tape source for the group's MGM South tracks, and had to use the best-available vinyl sources instead. Hope I'm able to save you a little cash here, sir!

Thanks, Jim for your input...Looks as though I'll search for a good quality 45 instead.

Why not the LP? The 45's are all styrene as far as I know...i once purchased the LP for a friend and mailed it to them in exchange for them just dubbing the album and sending it back on cd. Dang if i can't find where the cd is, but the tracks all sounded really good on the LP.

Yes, I realized that after you mentioned it, Tom, but I have an unplayed 45 on its way to me next week.

Tom, I acquired a http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh240/YahShure/DennisYostClassicsIV-WhatAmICryingF.jpg - vinyl commercial 45 a year or so ago, and although the record appeared to have been unplayed, it was a cracklefest from beginning to end. I'd wager that it was the noisiest MGM 45 I've ever had, but that's not saying much ("Hair" is playing on XM as I type this. :)
John, I hope you have better luck with your 45. Otherwise, Tom's right about the LP. I'd thought about going that route first, but already had the "Save The Sunlight" follow-up promo 45.

I take it from that that the two versions would then be identical?
Otherwise, I could see why John would want the 45 instead of the LP. :)

I just wanted to clarify my earlier comment a little. Although I responded to both of John's recent "quality queries" at the same time (the Sam Neely and this set), and my info was correct, my opinions about them are not 100% the same. The sound quality of the Neely vinyl dub transfers to CD were very iffy at best. But the end audio result for "What Am I Crying For", on that Aussie import disc, was FAR better than the Neely disc was. Personally, I found "What Am I Crying For" to be very close to being of "acceptable" sound quality, despite having been mastered from vinyl. And while I am still keeping my eyes open for a "master tape source" CD for the track, that Aussie CD will match up very favorably against any high-quality vinyl 45/LP dub we would be able to create for it, in my opinion. Overall, I'm happy to own that import CD, "warts" and all. So some of you may wanna give that Aussie disc a second look, especially given the horror stories others have just posted, about the sound quality of even pristine-looking 1972 45s.

i have the song on cdr that i copied at some point in the
last 15 years and it is clearly dubbed from a vinyl
source....i don't know if it's the cd collection that john
is asking about....but there is at least one out there on
cd that is from a vinyl source.....
