Our commercial 45 of "Love Potion No. 9" by The Clovers (United Artists 180) states a time of (2:00), but actually runs (1:54).

Does anyone know what's the specific difference(s) between the 45 and LP version of the Clovers' "Love Potion No. 9", other than the mono/stereo channel separation? I currently only have the mono 45 version on CD, but since the stereo 45 version and LP version both have approximately the same run time I'm curious to know how they specifically differ.

in the LP version he sings "…Love Potion #10" towards the end (taken from
another take); in the 45 he sings the usual "#9"; otherwise they are the same
basic take

Can anyone give me an aproximate release date for the LP (or possibly an EP or foreign release) containing the "Love Potion #10" lyric? A friend of mine from Seattle swears when the song was on the charts, the #10 lyric is the version his local station played and they weren't known for playing off of albums. My promotional single matches Paul Haney's listed and actual runtimes and does not mention #10.

From Steve Kolanjian's liner notes to the EMI The Best Of The Clovers - Love Potion No. 9 CD:

Recorded 6/8/59, take 16. Released summer 1960 on the LP 'Love Potion Number 9' (United Artists LP UAL 3099 / UAS 6099)

(The 45 was an edit of takes 13 and 16.)

With the posting of our new stereo Doo-Wop CD, I thought
I'd revive this thread to explain why we list "Love
Potion No. 9" as "stereo single debut" ...

Way back in the late 80's/early 90s someone edited the
stereo LP version in attempt to match the 45 version. As
mentioned above, for the 45 they removed the final verse
where he sings "I wonder what happened with love potion
#10" and replaced it with the earlier verse "when I
kissed a cop on 34th and Vine..."
With Pat's help we determined that re-created edit
proliferated to all other CDs thought to contain the
stereo 45 edit. For that first CD they made the edit at
the start of the verse. But the true 45 they made the
edit at the end of the sax break.
The way you can tell is on the 45 at 1:22 when he sings
"I held my nose and close my eyes" there is no sax right
after that line. But the incorrect edit has a sax there.

So on the new stereo Doo-Wop CD it's edited correctly,
and while we had it under the hood we matched the EQ and
reverb of the mono mix.
