The actual commercial 45 run time of Kenny Loggins' "Whenever I Call You 'Friend'" is 3:58. (Thanks once again to Jim for his tremendous assistance in supplying the timing info. The printed record label time is 3:59.) I mention this because the correct hit version of this song containing the introductory vocal tuneup runs 3:56-4:01.

The oldest version of this song that I have on CD is on Razor & Tie's 2-CD Easy '70s (1993). It sounds excellent here, with seemingly very low-generation source tapes, terrific dynamic range, nice EQ, and no evidence of noise reduction. The same analog transfer is used for:- Time-Life's 2-CD Body Talk Vol. 1 Forever Yours (1996; differently EQ'd digital clone)
- Time-Life's 2-CD Singers And Songwriters Vol. 5 1978-1979 (2000; differently EQ'd digital clone)
- Realm's 3-CD Ultimate Love Classics Vol. 2 (2002; cuts off 7-second intro)
- Time-Life's 2-CD Ultimate Love Songs Collection Almost Paradise (2004; differently EQ'd digital clone)
- Time-Life's 2-CD Classic Soft Rock Vol. 4 More Than A Feeling (2006; differently EQ'd digital clone)
There are compressed/limited versions on Yesterday Today Tomorrow The Greatest Hits Of (1997) and Essential (2002; different from Yesterday). Too bad, because Kenny Loggins could use a really good-sounding greatest hits collection with a full dynamic range. Michael McDonald got a few great-sounding collections, why not Kenny?
Go with Razor & Tie's 2-CD Easy '70s (1993), or one of the digital clones.

Not that I'm aware of, Doug. All of the promo 45s we got in at the station I was at had the tune-up intro. It was simple enough to cue past it, though (and most everybody there did, leaving a nice little cue burn surprise for those who didn't.)

I remember cueing past the tune-up when the song was a
hit in 1978. You're right, John, sometimes I'd be
listening to someone else cue to the beginning, then
that 'surprise' cue burn, lol.

Found an old cue burned copy years ago. The "tune-up" had
the cue burn, but the rest was passable.
