A 40th Anniversary EP of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" was released in July. I know it's available through Amazon in mp3 format.

Track 3 is listed as the U.S. Stereo Single Edit, running 3:58. Is this actually the DJ 45 version that also runs 3:58?

John, I don't have the answer to your specific question. But please be aware of the fact that "Space Oddity" was first released as a U.S. single in 1969, on Mercury 72949. Mercury was issuing mono/stereo promo 45s in 1969, so a stereo 1969 edited Mercury 45 version very likely does exist, although it was in mono on the 1969 Mercury commercial 45. This version "Bubbled Under" the Hot 100 at #124, and was a different edit from the one that appears on the "short" side of the 1973 U.S. promo 45 release (RCA 0876). It is anybody's guess which version appears on that Amazon mp3. FYI, the two edited versions are different enough where I would easily be able to distinguish between the two, with a quick listen.

Bowie's Mercury 72949 promo 45 is, indeed, mono/stereo and both have a listed time of 3:26.

The 1969 45 version may be track 2.

I have the Rhapsody service so I can listen to the full tracks, and I believe the EP has the following:

1) British Mono single which fades early (I don't have it but this is my guess as to the source)
2) American Mercury mono 45 1969 (It matches my stock 45, there was a stereo side on the DJ copy which is on the Rykodisc Singles CD)
3) American RCA DJ edit 1973 (matches my DJ edit 45)

I'm not sure about the speed on the tracks above though, I haven't had time to check.

Interesting that the full RCA LP version is NOT included, unless you mix it yourself from all the parts on the EP.

They must be encouraging people to do just that. I can't imagine too many people would want to listen to the instruments, percussion, and vocals separately.
