I have a version of Babyface featuring LL Cool J, Howard Hewett, Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniels' "This Is for the Lover in You" on my Promo Only Mainstream Radio subscription CD series that's billed as the "Edit with No Rap" and has an actual run time of 3:28. This version was likely serviced to Top 40 radio stations, which strongly suggests there was an official promo CD single release bearing this version.
Does anyone have a promo CD single copy of "This Is for the Lover in You" who can furnish the pertinent details regarding track listings and run time info? |

my commercial cd single issued as epic 78443 contains the below tracks
this is for the lover in you featuring ll cool j, howard hewett, jody watley and jeffrey daniels 1-"that kind of man" (extended mix) (mixed by jon gass) (5:13) 2-"honey lookin' laced" (extended mix) (mixed by rich travali (5:30) 3-instrumental mixed by jon gass (5:13) i also have a promo cd single for the song with NO catalog number but issued by epic which contains the following tracks and ONLY credited as babyface "this is for the lover in you" 1-radio edit w/o rap (4:12) 2-puffy's mix w/o rap (3:43) what's odd is that on the cardboard sleeve back it states that the promo cd single came with 8 tracks, but there are only 2 babyface this is for the lover in you (the remixes) 1-radio edit w/o rap 2-puffy's mix w/o rap 3-puffy's face to face mix (featuring ghostface killah) 4-jon-john mix 5-trackmasters mix 6-timbaland mix 7-instrumental 8-a capella ------------- edtop40 |

God, I wish I hadn't tossed my cassingles when I moved to Los Angeles from Seattle. EDIT: Okay, it appears that both the 2-track cassingle and the vinyl 45 (yes, there was one) had the "That Kind of Man" mix on the A-side and the "Honey Lookin' Laced" mix on the B-side. It sounds to my ears like Radio Edit/Babyface is an edit of the "That Kind of Man" mix and the Radio Edit/LL Cool J is an edit of "Honey Lookin' Laced" mix. This would mean my recollection (for a change) is probably correct. Have not been able to verify running times on the cassingle and 45 yet, though I remember that I specifically sought out the promo back in 1996 (with some trouble) because the cassingle version was SHORTER than the commercial CD single version. |

Brian may be onto something about a shorter version of "This Is for the Lover in You" appearing on the cassette single release because Joel Whitburn's Pop Singles Annual 1955-1999 book shows a run time of 3:57 for the song. (I haven't been able to verify this myself, but perhaps Paul Haney might be able to look into this for us?) This time closely matches the length of the LP version and the "Radio Edit/Babyface" version. Speaking of which, can anyone confirm if the latter two versions are identical?
Since we do know the commercial CD single runs 5:13, is it pretty safe to say that all database CDs running 3:58-3:59 should at least have an "LP version" comment next to them? |

Hmm... I've always considered the commercial CD single to be a maxi single with entended versions (it does have three tracks), and the cassingle and 45 to be the "true" 45 versions. |

If I'm not mistaken, Billboard's policy is that a CD single must contain a minimum of four tracks to be considered a maxi-single. I still think a case can be made to classify the 3:58-3:39 database CD appearances as "LP version" for now. And if someone can confirm that the vinyl 45 and cassette single are identical to the LP version, then the comment can always later be expanded as: "LP, cassette single, and vinyl 45 version". Of course, we also still need to verify if the LP version is identical to the "Radio Edit/Babyface" version on the DJ CD single. If they're different, then we'll need to examine each of the database CDs individually to determine which version is on them. (I think we can at least presume all pressings of Babyface's The Day CD would contain the LP version.) |

Ed, I don't have the cassingle, but I do have the commercial 7-inch single (Epic 78443) and it is also the "that kind of man - mix" running 3:58 (no time is listed on the label). I don't have the The Day CD but a while ago I purchased a download from the The Essential Babyface album, and I am unable to detect a difference between it and my 45.
The 45 also describes it as a "special version". The single was released several weeks before the album, so my guess is that the original plan was to use different mixes for the single and album but that they eventually used the same mix for both. It appears the 3-track CD single you mentioned is indeed a CD single and not a maxi-single as a separate 4-track CD maxi-single was also issued: http://www.mymusic.com/product.asp?curr=1&muzenbr=237050 Aside: Hewett, Watley, and Daniels consituted the group Shalamar when they recorded the original version of the song. By 1985 all three had left the group which carried on with an entirely new lineup. When they performed on Babyface's remake of their song, they could not do so under their old group name, which is why they are credited individually. |

thanks to john, he sent me a wave file of the album version from the babyface cd "collection of his greatest hits" and i can report that this version and the cassingle version are identical......so the song "this is for the lover in you" (that kind of man - mix) is the same as the album version......go figure..... thax john ------------- edtop40 |

After 8 years, I can finally solve the mystery of Ed's promo CD with remixes. It appears there are two promo CDs with remixes: one with 2 tracks, and one with 8 tracks. Here's what's on the 8-track promo:

I also acquired a copy of the same 2-track promo CD that Ed lists above. I also have the vinyl 3:29 edit from Chuck and if it's vinyl I can't detect any. This definitely sounds like a CD source, but it could be a pristine dub. This version matches what's on the Promo Only compilation so this version may be on a CD somewhere. ------------- DJ L. |
