Has anyone noticed that the promo 12" has a slightly different lyric at the "Mama-unh mama-unh ima come closer" part? From memory the lyric above is from the LP version on the CD. The 12" promo does not have the "unh's" in there. Instead it sounds like something from the lyric of Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" I have the 12" but have not captured it to the computer yet to give the exact lyric or provide a sample.

I'm assuming that this is an early version and then they decided to give it a little "kick" later.

No kidding!? I just listened to the LP version, and by-golly it does sound like they've edited some lyrics out, replacing them with the "uhhs." I wonder if they did this to avoid a lawsuit with Michael Jackson.

If I recall correctly, they modified the song between servicing the promo 12" ("Mama-seh, mama-sah") and the CD promo ("Mama-UHH").

On a sidenote, the lawsuit would have been by Manu Dibango, who created that "Soul Makossa" lick, and who later came to an arrangement with Michael Jackson. I think he'll see yet another payday thanks to Rihanna's "Don't Stop The Music," which also uses the lick.

The New Yorker tracked Dibango down after MJ died - check this out: http://www.newyorker.com/talk/2009/07/06/090706ta_talk_sanneh - New Yorker story

Whoa! I forgot all about that record! I used to have the 45 when I was a kid, but I have no idea what happened to it. Cool song.

Interesting! I guess it was to avoid all of the problems Rihanna and Jackson faced. I guess I should be glad I picked up that 12" at the record show I attended back in 1997.

Does anyone have this 12" single that can pass along the running time?

Not positive I still have it, but I'll check. From what I remember, it wasn't any different than the re-edited later versions. Also, a pic on Ebay calls it "Album Version (3:47)".
