This is sort of a side topic to our U.S. top 40 hits that we talk about here all the time. I've decided to make a multi-volume CDR compilation series that's basically the UK equivalent of our "Have a Nice Day: Super Hits of the 70s" Rhino series - but for British hits. It's the same concept as ours but with a British twist. I've done a lot of research to hear every (or virtually ALMOST every) top 40 hit in the UK in the '70s over the past few weeks and compiled a 240-song track listing of the UK hits that I want to comprise my series (most of which are unknown to US audiences - but great songs), and I've bought quite a few import CDs to fill in the gaps of songs I didn't have already. Anyway, it dawned on me that a lot of these songs I have for my collection are probably album versions, and if single versions exist out there on CD, I'd prefer to have those. So my questions are:
*Is there a UK book or database equivalent to Pat's? (I tend to doubt it.)
*Is there a UK chat board that's similar to ours, filled with people talking about UK single versions?
*Is there anyone on this board that's quite familiar with UK versions (perhaps even someone who lives/lived in the UK) that could look at my list and tell me of the any songs they know that have single versions or edits?

yes, there is a UK paperback book equivalent. It's the Guinness Book of
British Hit Singles.

i have an earlier edition of the book and it's fine.
I don't know of an online database similar to Pat's, nor a chat board.
I am actually visiting the UK now and I will ask a friend of mine who is into
the British charts if he knows of anything.

Yes, please ask your friend David. I have the book you're talking about - but it's the UK equivalent to the Joel Whitburn book that lists the charted singles their peak position and weeks on the chart. (It's actually the book I used as a reference in order to listen to every charted UK hit from the '70s). But it's not the equivalent to Pat's book/database in that it tells no information as to whether a single version exists - and that's what I was asking about.

I'm actually doing the same job you're doing (and uploading the songs in my Itunes copied from my Cds). I have compiled peak position information (similar to the Joel Whitburn's Pop Annual book) as this info has not been published anywhere. I have used the above mentioned book of British hit singles (former Guinness but the latest edition has been published by Virgin) and also the "chartstats" webpage where you can search by artist, song or weekly chart and is updated every week (and thousands of picture sleeve of the hits). If you are looking for specific tracks I can help you with this as I have purchased hundreds of cds in the UK for this job during many years. I can also send you my excel files of the compiled info by year and peak position of each song. Let me know if you are interested in any of this.

I've used that for years; unfortunately, it doesn't help with my current quest because you can't really search for songs you don't know exist. But since reading your post, I checked it again to see if I could have it list, say, all charted singles from 1970 (which WOULD include songs a person might know), and it comes up with a list but only the first 50 songs. You'd think it would give you an option to go to a second page of 50 songs, but it doesn't! You only get to see the first 50, and it tells you to narrow your search criteria if you want any others.

I admit there are some UK hits from the 70s that are terrific and I have several on my ipod now ("Mull of Kintyre" by Wings, "Can't Give You Anything" by the Stylistics, "Sailing" by Rod Stewart, and even "I Am A Clown" by David Cassidy). Acts like T. Rex, Gary Glitter, David Essex, Slade and Suzi Quatro were huge back then in England. But just like the US charts produced some big hits back then that many cringe at today when they hear them play, I'm sure the Brits have a few songs that they prefer to never hear again as well. They had chart toppers like "Wand'rin' Star" by Lee Marvin, "If" by Telly Savalas and who can forget Billy Connolly's version of "D-I-V-O-R-C-E." I'm sure glad I missed those clunkers.
