Thought I'd limit this to only songs in the database and only the 80's. Updates and corrections are encouraged.

Undercover Of The Night - Rolling Stones (6:22 extended mix)

Far From Over - Frank Stallone (5:18 club mix)

Tell Her About It - Billy Joel (5:35 Jellybean remix)

Break My Stride - Matthew Wilder (5:10 Club mix)

Things Can Only Get Better - Howard Jones (7:26 extended)

Sex As A Weapon - Pat Benatar (6:13 extended)

Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel (7:20 extended dance remix)

Everybody Have Fun Tonight - Wang Chung (6:45 12 Inches of Fun)

What about "Dancing In The Dark", "Born In The USA" & "Cover Me" by Bruce Springsteen? Given his thoughts on remixes, I'd guess these will be vinyl-only.
Was the 12" mix of "Flashdance" ever issued on CD?

The 12" mix of "Flashdance" was on "The Casablanca Story" box set.

It's also on the Canadian Unidisc What A Feelin' along with the 12" versions of Breakdance, The Dream and Why Me and the instrumental of Flashdance.

The Jellybean remix of "Tell Her About It" was on the UK CD single for "I Go To Extremes."

Also, the extended mix of "Sledgehammer" was released on UK or German CD single for the song back in '86 or '87 (whenever the song was released). I used to own "Sledgehammer," but I don't know if I do anymore... I haven't seen it for a while.

There is an extended mix (5:40) which I also have on a French Culture Dance CD but the 7:20 extended dance mix I haven't found.

Thanks for the info on Tell Her About It. All the UK versions I've found on ebay have Uptown Girl instead of Tell Her About It. Are there 2 versions?

I didn't even know there was a remix of this. Given that it's Jellybean, this makes me wonder - was it real dance-y? Or was it more like the remix of BJ's "Keeping the Faith"?

It's only real dancey because it's an uptempo song. It's not an electronic "club" mix, if that's what you mean.

Apparently... the one with the extended "Tell Her About It" is a four-track, 5-inch UK CD single in a slimline jewel case with a catalog number of Joel CD2 and a UPC of 5 099765550153.

The Jellybean remix of "Tell Her About It" is great (in my opinion). Added lots of energy to the track but defintely not an "electronic club remix" as Brian W. stated. Added a nice beat behind it, extended it, added some echo/reverb to Billy's vocal and added some extra background vocals.

I have a needle drop that I took from a Mint, never been played, copy if anyone is interested in hearing.

I have actually made 6 discs of really hard to get 12"'s from the 80's. Many of the above are included.

Looking at both Ebay and Discogs, it does not appear there was any extended version of "Uptown Girl." There wasn't even a 12-inch of the single released in the US, and foreign 12-inchers just have the album version.

Can anyone tell me if these 12" mixes of top 40 hits are available on any CDs or CD-singles?

Basil, Toni - Mickey (so far, all CDs have used clean vinyl sources for this)
Branigan, Laura - Spanish Eddie
Carnes, Kim - Crazy in the Night
Hartman, Dan - Second Nature
Welch, Bob - Precious Love

And while I'm at it, does anyone know if these 12" versions (of non-top 40 hits) are available on any CDs: (No one's going to be as knowledgeable as you guys!)

Amazulu - Montego Bay
Aswad - Give a Little Love

Note: As people answer my questions, I will remove the songs from this list, and thus make it shorter and a little easier to read for the next reader.

There were at least two different extended mixes of "Together Forever": the Lover's Leap Mix and the House of Love Mix. Lover's Leap was issued on an OOP Japan CD called "Rick Astley - The 12" Collection," and there is a UK or European CD with that same title that has the House of Love mix on it. Both are listed on the UK store MattsCDSingles.com (an excellent resource, for research if nothing else), but both are listed as out of stock.

I have Taylor Dayne "Tell It To My Heart - House of Hearts Mix" running 8:43 on a UK CD single, but sounds like it's the wrong running time.

A "Lost in Your Eyes" UK CD3 with the Piano and Vocal Mix is available right now on Matt's CD Singles for $15 US (though a better place to look pricewise is usually Amazon.co.uk).

The Campfire Mix of "We Could Be Together" is on my "Electric Youth" CD single, running 5:34. (And is in fact available as a download on iTunes and Amazon.) But I don't know if that's the right version, as you didn't list specific mixes.

The "Dancing on the Ceiling" 12" is readily available on the remaster of the "Dancing on the Ceiling" album:

http://www.amazon.com/Dancing-Ceiling-Lionel-Richie/dp/B0000 931PJ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1287349413&sr=1-1

Another good resource is Discogs.com. You should find most of these listed here, with various versions from around the world, complete with tracklistings.

Talking Heads - And She Was
might be several sources but I have it on an import called Talking Heads Original 12X12 Remixes

Flirts - Jukebox
I have the 5:26 remix version on Unidisc The Flirts 12 inch Classics on CD

Limahl - Never Ending Story - club mix 6:09
I have a 5:20 12" mix on several CDs including Kajagoogoo&Limahl The Singles and More

Commodores - Night Shift
Best of Motown 1980s vol I

Swingout Sister - Break Out
Don't remember how many remixes there were but the "new Rockin' Mix" is on 8os Dance Gold

Thanks for all the help so far, guys. To comment on a few comments:

"The Campfire Mix of "We Could Be Together" is on my "Electric Youth" CD single, running 5:34."

Yes, I have the "Electric Youth" CD album where the Campfire mix appears as well. I'm looking for the "house mix" and "house of trix". I've updated the post to reflect that.

Though I have the timings and names of mixes for most of the songs on the list, I left that info out because I didn't want to clutter the post, especially when I figured there's only one 12" remix. But I'll add info in cases where more than one version seem to come up.

Thanks for the links, Brian, and as for "Together Forever", I'm looking for neither of the 2 mixes you mentioned but one called "extended remix" 7:00 on CD.

I have a general question about 12" versions. Sometimes a 12" is listed as a "club mix" and sometimes as an "extended version". Generally speaking, is there a difference in those descriptions, or are they used interchangeably? I'm just wondering if "club mix" means it has lengthy instrumental interludes, or perhaps a more electronic beat oriented mix, than an "extended version" (or "extended remix"). Does anyone know?

I don't think there's any rule, but that's always been my impression -- that if it's called a "club" mix it generally has more of a pumping "house" beat.

I noticed that a Richard Marx CD single has a bonus cut of "Endless Summer Nights" remix. Has anyone ever heard this remix? Is it dancy? Is it just extended? I only thought there was the single edit and album version of this song.

Posted By: Brian W.
Date Posted: 21 October 2010 at 11:58am
I have that one. No, it's not dancy, but I think it might be extended by a bit, not enough to call it a true "extended" mix, though.

I have a rock mix of "Don't Mean Nothing" on a 12 inch.
I haven't listened to it in years (if ever).
Not sure the differences in that one.
I never knew of an "Endless Summer Nights" mix.

Found it! The answer is: No, it's not dancy, and it's actually shorter than the album version. It runs 4:21.

Does anyone know if the 12" version of Toni Basil's "Mickey" has come out on CD anywhere?

Posted By: EdisonLite

The 12" of Limahl's Never Ending Story has the "club mix" (6:09) (and possibly a 3:53 remix). As Indy500 pointed out, there's a 5:20 version on several CDs including Kajagoogoo & Limahl The Singles and More. Does anyone know where the 5:20 version originated? Was it a UK 12"? And is the 6:09 12" version on any CD?

the original 12" of Mickey is on this CD:

http://www.discogs.com/Various-KOL-12-Inch-Dance-Versions-Bl ue/release/1570189

There were different volumes of this series, blue, pink, red, green and yellow. The only one I see on amazon is the pink version. The discogs listing above has a seller selling the blue for 50 bux, which is pricey, but it is out of print.

the 6:09 version of Limahl is on here:

http://www.amazon.com/MightREAL-Dance-Floor-Retrospective-19 80-1988/dp/B000FSMKLY/ref=pd_sim_m_1

Actually, one of the reviews on there is mine (Daniel W. Kelly), and if you click on my name, it will take you to all my reviews on amazon and I've done reviews for literally dozens of compilations featuring 12" mixes to help out people searching for them on CD.

A couple of my "listmania lists" on amazon also focus solely on 12" compilations:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/richpub/listmania/byauthor/A3VBVES8 IYR5ZJ/ref=cm_pdp_lm_all

And if that seems like too much work, feel free to just send me a message with specific questions about 12" versions on CD. It's kind of my obsession and I can just e-mail you with an answer if I know any compilations that include any particular 12" mixes.

Hope that helps.

Surprise! It's me! heh heh.

I try to focus my reviews on the important and crucial details of the products for collectors rather than playing the praising/bashing games that go on, which I find pointless. The larger internet world simply isn't as pleasant a place to visit as targeted message boards like this one, where everyone is in it to help each other and enrich their knowledge rather than criticizing peoples' personal tastes.

The mods may be interested in the specific 12" remixes on the database for the band Dead or Alive

YOU SPIN ME AROUND (LIKE A RECORD)(7:12) is the "Performance Mix"

YOU SPIN ME AROUND (LIKE A RECORD)(7:59) is the "Murder Mix" and starts with the broken glass sound.

BRAND NEW LOVER (9:03) is "The Dust Monkey's Love Bubble Mix" and is labeled as such on the Club Epic vol 5 CD

There is a second 12" mix of BRAND NEW LOVER called the "Up Ducky Mix" (6:34) and was just released on Retro:Active 7 on the Hi-Bias label. That CD also has the 12" mix of Wang Chung's LET'S GO which is not available in the states.

I, too, have found that every UK Cd single of "I Go To Extremes" has had the track listing you mentioned (and I've probably come across about 50 in the past 2 years). Odd that not one would have "Tell Her About It", statistically speaking. But Brian W gave the UPC code # for it a couple years ago on another thread here, IIRC. So I guess it exists but it must be extremely rare compared to the other UK CD single of "I Go To Extremes".

Ha, I owe you one. After reading your post I rechecked my item and it was a 7" vinyl EP. The seller was nice enough to cancel the bid.

So, when one of these babies pops up on ebay can I expect you to be my bidding nemesis? LOL

Or maybe Columbia will get a clue and throw the remix on something during their Billy Joel catalog update next year and save us BOTH the trouble of trying to find it elsewhere.

Good hunting.

I don't think it's Columbia's decision to make. From what I understand, Billy controls his catalog & has the final say on what versions get released.

It's strange--despite the fact that I strive to get single/radio versions on CD whenever possible, I always prefer to have the 12" versions on vinyl. It just seems like that is the format they were meant to be on...no idea why I feel that way, but it sure makes it easier (and cheaper) to collect them.

Rather than asking people to go down 2/3 of the page on page 1, I'm posting an updated (and shorter) list of 12" versions I still can't find on CD - in hopes someone knows of some import CD that has released any of these extended versions since my earlier post:

Top 40:
Basil, Toni - Mickey (so far, all CDs have used clean vinyl sources for this)
Branigan, Laura - Solitaire (this came close to being released on the Gold Legion label that folded before its release; such a big hit, I'd think it would be on some import compilation somewhere).
Branigan, Laura - Spanish Eddie
Carnes, Kim - Crazy in the Night
Climie Fisher - Love Changes Everything (extended mix, not "love mix" which is on CD)
Hartman, Dan - Second Nature
Kinks - Come Dancing
Scarlett & Black - You Don't Know

Not Top 40:
Amazulu - Montego Bay
Aswad - Give a Little Love
Manchester, Melissa - Energy
Sister Sledge - Frankie
Wilson, Mari - Just What I Always Wanted

Also, I just discovered on YouTube an extended version of Hall & Oates "Private Eyes" labeled "extended re-mixed" (5:18). Does anyone know if this has ever been on vinyl or CD? It doesn't sound like someone just made a longer edit - it seems to have other parts.

Also, on YouTube, I found an extended version of Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes" (6:43) and they show an actual original cardboard cover for it saying 'Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes 12" Maxi Single'. But then I researched discogs.com - it was released - but it's the regular album version; so I believe someone just made an extended edit from the album version for this YouTube clip. Has anyone ever tried duplicating this YouTube extended edit? It's nice. And considering it was the 2nd biggest hit of an entire decade (and a song that became part of our pop culture), it deserves to have a longer version!

The Howard Jones songs are on a disk called "Risk" that was included in a remastered box of 12" Album and Action Replay.

https://www.discogs.com/Howard-Jones-The-12-Album-Action-Rep lay/release/2803232

I bought a numbered limited edition box directly from his website to get "Things Can Only Get Better." Sound is outstanding as everything is directly from the master tapes.

If you read the comments of that video, someone points out that it is not a vintage mix. The multi-tracks have been leaked, and the extended version in the YouTube video was apparently made from those tracks. I've never seen or heard an official extended mix, and the very thorough Japanese 12-Inch Collection CDs only include the UK single mix.

Thanks Aaron. I had only read the poster's description, not the comments. Interestingly, while someone says this is from the leaked multi-tracks, someone else says this was on a handful of albums. (Could that be possible?)

Unless someone on this board comes forward with information that it's
an official mix, I would tend to believe that it's a fan-created mix from
the leaked multis. It is well done, though.

I agree, Aaron. As it's not on discogs or amazon, and presumably hasn't shown up on ebay in all these years, it's likely a fan-created mix.

Gordon, you must not have ever checked Discogs for these, because Indy500 just posted a link to one of them from Discogs, and now I just found another one from your list on Discogs. "The Best" was on two different 1993 CD singles:

https://www.discogs.com/Tina-Turner-The-Best/release/1370824 - https://www.discogs.com/Tina-Turner-The-Best/release/1370824

https://www.discogs.com/Tina-Turner-The-Best/release/10264657 - https://www.discogs.com/Tina-Turner-The-Best/release/1026465 7

Thanks, Brian. Yeah, I've been going through discogs, including some 90s & 00s songs I didn't include on the list here. Some I do find, but most I don't find there, as they probably don't exist in CD format.

"We Don't Talk Anymore" has been made available as a
Digital Download. Unfortunately, it is not available
as lossless.

Curious if anyone can tell if it is from a tape
source?

After I saw it available via download, i searched to
see if it was on CD anywhere but I never found
anything.

I see it's also on Tidal as a lossless file for $4.60 (most of their 7" singles are $3, so I suppose for $4.60 for an extended single keeps in line with that). I'm listening to it right now on Spotify (where you can hear the whole song), and I'm not hearing any vinyl artifacts.

The Tidal flac, if this isn't from vinyl, would be the equivalent of buying this on CD - but sometimes their flacs are just converted from mp3's - not Tidal's doing (I don't think) but usually the master owner who sends in a "WAV" converted from an mp3, instead of bothering to send in a true WAV or flac.

PS - Mark M - can you listen to this on Spotify and tell if this is from vinyl - or cleaned vinyl? (The more I continue to listen to this on first listen, I'm wondering if this was processed through some vinyl cleaning software. I could be wrong. Interested to hear Mark's and other's reaction to this. Glad the full version is on Spotify for anyone to hear.)

Interesting. I just listened all the way through to "We Don't Talk Anymore". On the one hand, I'm hearing tape hiss at the end and no rumble (usually a good sign it's from tape, not vinyl), but on the last "ain't" of "I ain't gotten cheap" I'm hearing a click on one side (if you play the line loudly), which could well be a vinyl pop, though sometimes such a thing can actually be on the tape source.

I'm really curious to see other audiophiles chime in on this one. If it's from tape, I'll probably buy the flac and hope it's really lossless.

Also, when the Cliff Richard CDs were reissued about 10 years ago with so many bonus cuts, this extended 12" version was notably excluded. Being a big hit, I wondered why. Maybe it all boils down to the master tape is lost.

Wow, how did that happen? I thought Billy was pretty
adamant that edits, remixes, single versions, etc. not be
reissued.

Was that not on the Billy Joel 4-CD or 5-CD boxed sets that came out a few years ago?
Or on some rare Euro maxi-CD single?

Anyone have a concise list of 12 inch singles issued during the 1980's? Just curious.

If someone does have such a list, I doubt it would be concise. It seems
just about every hit from the 1980s made it to a 12" single. Between
promos, stock copies, and imports, there's not much you can't find on a
12" from that decade.

any of these extended versions since my earlier post:

Top 40:
Basil, Toni - Mickey (so far, all CDs have used clean
vinyl sources for this)
Branigan, Laura - Solitaire (this came close to being
released on the Gold Legion label that folded before its
release; such a big hit, I'd think it would be on some
import compilation somewhere).
Branigan, Laura - Spanish Eddie
Carnes, Kim - Crazy in the Night
Climie Fisher - Love Changes Everything (extended mix, not
"love mix" which is on CD)
Hartman, Dan - Second Nature
Kinks - Come Dancing
Scarlett & Black - You Don't Know

Not Top 40:
Amazulu - Montego Bay
Aswad - Give a Little Love
Manchester, Melissa - Energy
Sister Sledge - Frankie
Wilson, Mari - Just What I Always Wanted

Also, I just discovered on YouTube an extended version of
Hall & Oates "Private Eyes" labeled "extended re-mixed"
(5:18). Does anyone know if this has ever been on vinyl or
CD? It doesn't sound like someone just made a longer edit
- it seems to have other parts.

Also, on YouTube, I found an extended version of Kim
Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes" (6:43) and they show an actual
original cardboard cover for it saying 'Kim Carnes - Bette
Davis Eyes 12" Maxi Single'. But then I researched
discogs.com - it was released - but it's the regular album
version; so I believe someone just made an extended edit
from the album version for this YouTube clip. Has anyone
ever tried duplicating this YouTube extended edit? It's
nice. And considering it was the 2nd biggest hit of an
entire decade (and a song that became part of our pop
culture), it deserves to have a longer version!

Not exactly, but I do have a Google spreadsheet of every
remix I have on any commercial (and some bootleg) CDs.
As I have well over 3000 CDs, it's gotten kind of long.

Hello all! I am new to your forum and remixes of
70's/80s/90s hits is my thing.

It all started in 1983 with the 12" of Peter
Schilling's "Major Tom" and since then I've been a
rabid remix fan.

If anyone is looking for any remix of a popular song
from the late 70s to early 90s, I can probably help.

Of course, as someone else pointed out, discogs.com is
the ultimate resource for finding rare remixes on CDs,
but even then there are a surprising number that have
never been issued or only on impossible to get
bootlegs of wildly varying sound quality.

I've looked for a forum exclusively devoted to
remixes, but for now I hope to be an informative
contributor here!

As mentioned in a reply earlier, I keep a gigantic
Google spreadsheet of all the remixes on any of the
CDs I own. I am considering the merits of opening it
to the people in read only format, depending on
interest.

Also, I am a DJ and enjoy making remixes myself! You
can hear my stuff at www.audiodile.com and also on
SoundCloud.

Cheers, all!

I noticed a while ago that the 12" Single version was
made available digitally but all the sites had it as a
lossy file.
Last night I checked qobuzz and noticed that they had
it listed as CD quality.

I have never purchased anything from this site (I

If a lossless file did exist, I am surprised that
7digital didn't have it.

lossless files than 7digital. Often, I only find MP3 on
7digital, but I will find the same file in FLAC on
Qobuz.

Several years ago, I posted this question if any of the extended versions below are available on CD. I deleted 4 or 5 songs off the list today, but also added Bob Welch's extended version of "Precious Love" (which I didn't know existed back then). I'm bumping this up in case any of the extended versions still left on this list below are available on CD --

Can anyone tell me if these 12" mixes of top 40 hits are available on any CDs or CD-singles?

Basil, Toni - Mickey (so far, all CDs have used clean vinyl sources for this)
Branigan, Laura - Spanish Eddie
Carnes, Kim - Crazy in the Night
Hartman, Dan - Second Nature
Kinks - Come Dancing
Welch, Bob - Precious Love

And while I'm at it, does anyone know if these 12" versions (of non-top 40 hits) are available on any CDs: (No one's going to be as knowledgeable as you guys!)

Amazulu - Montego Bay
Aswad - Give a Little Love
Wilson, Mari - Just What I Always Wanted

Now that I think about it, I posted this comment 10 years ago:

Basil, Toni - Mickey (so far, all CDs have used clean vinyl sources for this)

Have there been any CDs (foreign or domestic) that have released the extended version of "Mickey" in the last 10 years? It's quite possible that a tape source was used. Out of all the songs on my want list above, this one was by far this biggest, so you'd think there'd be a proper release of the 12" mix.

exist on any other compilation.

I meant to respond to this awhile ago. I ordered that CD, but the 12" version of Mari Wilson's "Just What I Always Wanted" doesn't match the 12" I have. I wonder where it comes from. I don't know of two extended versions of the song being done back then. Some sections may overlap exactly (between my 12" and the verson on this CD) but there was a unique acapella intro in this that is not on the actual 12". There were other differences, too. And sections in a different order. But I need to study both, because I may be able to create some of the original 12" extended version from the "12 Inch Dance" CD and take what I must from the vinyl I have. The version on CD did seem to be master tape, not cleaned vinyl, so I really don't know where it came from. And it didn't seem to be "more modern" remix. It seemed "of its time".

I see. Thanks for clearing that up. I hope the US 12" remix comes out on CD but I doubt it will. Glad the UK/European 12" mix did. I still haven't had a chance to really study them closely and see if parts of the UK mix can be put into the US 12" vinyl version. Or - have you checked to see if they are completely different mixes?

Posted By: EdisonLite
Date Posted: 29 November 2020 at 3:14am
Update: I just noticed the US Remix (that was linked to on Discogs above) says Remixed by Ivan Ivan. Unforuntately, the European version (on Discogs) doesn't list the remixer. Also, the CD with it - "12 Inch Dance - 80s Synthpop", which I have, doesn't list the remixer on this UK version either.

Posted By: EdisonLite
Date Posted: 13 December 2020 at 7:23pm
I finally was able to compare the UK and US 12" remixes of Mari Wilson's "Just What I've Always Wanted" to see if they are the same remix but different edits. I had to adjust the EQ and speed of my 12" US disc dub to really match them up. They are not the same remixer. So while we know the US remixer is Ivan Ivan, we don't know who mixed it for the UK. The remixes (when comparing chorus to chorus or verse to verse) aren't radically different. You probably wouldn't notice if you weren't A-B'ing them, but they're definitely different, and of course, the instrumental breaks and other sections are quite different from one to the other. So unless some label releases this, it will never the see the light of day on CD.

BTW, if you don't know this song but like '80s songs that have a '60s influence (like Tracey Ullman's "They Don't Know") check out the original mix of this. I find it really catchy - and the video is nice, too, IIRC.

Does anyone have these extended mixes on CD (and if not, do you have any on vinyl)? None are in the database so I'm hoping they're on import CDs, etc.

Fleetwood Mac - Seven Wonders (extended version) 6:38
Sheena Easton - So Far So Good (extended dance version) 5:24 & (red mix) 8:00
Andy Gibb - Shadow Dancing (special disco version) 6:07
Whitney Houston - How Will I Know (dance-mix) (on German 12" ONLY, not same as US remix) 6:10

The following I have on clean vinyl, so I'm wondering if they've been released on CD:
Eurythmics - There Must be an Angel (special dance mix) 6:15
Helen Reddy - Make Love to Me (disco mix) 6:38
