My commercial 45 (confirmed as Challenge 59321, is styrene, with deadwax info of "C-1279 1-E") has a listed time of (2:40), an actual time of (2:45), and ends cold! This has me a little concerned. Both of the "Nuggets" database CDs from Rhino feature mono versions of the song, but run (2:40) and (2:41). (Luckily, Sundazed has this unfaded, (2:45), cold ending version on CD, on a Knickerbockers rarities package!) I had always hoped Rhino was using the actual mono masters while putting together such 60's comps. But if they had here, wouldn't the version on their CDs have actually run (2:45) and ended cold? Instead, it appears that Rhino just mono'd out a stereo master of the song, and then just faded the song out early to match the listed (2:40) run time, believing it to have been correct (which is wasn't.) At the time, I recall Rhino repeatedly trumpeting the extensive time, effort and care that they put into the Nuggets Box Set. I believed them. But now I believe this could be the tip of a Rhino "audio iceberg", and I am now questioning to myself whether or not other Rhino mono CD appearances were simply created from fold-downs of stereo masters, when other, dedicated mono mixes existed. But I'm still hoping against hope that somehow, it might not really be true. Perhaps there was a second, shorter, 1966 commercial 45 issued in 1966. Anyone happen to have a faded-ending Challenge 45 for "Lies"?

Interesting find, Jim! I have never heard "Lies" end cold. It always faded out on the radio during its chart run, and, although I've never owned the Challenge 45, my early-'70s Lana reissue 45 also fades.
On the original 1972 Nuggets double-LP (Elektra 2006) "Lies" is listed as (2:45). The track is in stereo, but it also fades like the others.

Lies does end cold on the mono Challenge 45 single. The Stereo versions which end cold emanate from the original session reel. The LP had a fade as well, I think it was rechanneled Stereo if I remember correctly. You may have a earlier pressing than mine. My copy did end cold but had a bad dropout. Wonder if the fade was a way to cover up a tape fault.

On Youtube someone had a video of the british single of the song, it seems to fade out...I don't have the Challenge 45 but I also have never heard a cold end on the song...
------------- Live in stereo.

My Challenge LP I had was a later pressing. I was peeved when I bought it. A friend had a earlier pressing which was true Stereo and it sounded great.
