My commercial 45, which is stereo, confirmed as Polydor 14223 with deadwax info of "PD 14223 - AS-1B 2-1-1", has both a listed and actual time of (3:30). I only post this info because all current database CDs that include the "45 version" of this song have run times ranging from (3:19) to (3:31).

There currently are no notes about the two different versions---with DJ chatter and without. Were 45s pressed both ways? The "Can You Dig It" box set has the version with chatter, while the "Have A Nice Decade" box set is without, yet all discs simply say "45 version" with no indication of which one you get.

The database needs to designate which CDs have the DJ
voiceovers. The "Billboard Top R&B Hits: 1974" CD also has
the version with the DJ voiceovers.

The DJ Promo Version on CD has no chatter.

You might be onto something, John. Is the version without the chatter/voiceovers only on promo 45s, or were there commercial 45s like this, too?

A dj promo cd single from 1974?

My commercial vinyl 45 has the MC banter.

My commercial 45 also has the banter.

I should have been less confusing, sorry. The DJ 45 version from The Singles Volume 9: 1973-1975 has no DJ banter.

So, it's looking so far like commercial copies all have the banter. Is it safe to say that the "no banter" version was only on promo 45s? If so, all "45 version" CDs that are missing the banter should probably say "dj 45 version."

Correct Aaron but we really need verification that the vinyl dj 45 did not include the banter. As you know the James Brown singles cd series has contained a number of errors.

Very true, Pat. It's highly possible those without banter are "neither"
versions. Hopefully someone owns a copy of the dj 45 to verify. In the
meantime, does anyone recall how it was played on the radio, if it
received airplay?

DJ Banter was left off the Polydor promo single. And the local DJ could add it if desired.

But, it wouldn't be the same as on the released record.

When this was a current, most of our Disc Jockeys at WATO 1290 played this promo 45 without the DJ banter, one would do his own version. Late in the run, it was carted and played into it being an oldie that way. WJBE in Knoxville had a special James Brown mix of the song with an extended banter by James which was only available to stations he owned. WNOX 990 played the promo 45 as is as did WFLI 1070 in Chattanooga. Hopefully this will give you some East TN perspective. The several different commercial Polydor 45 singles I have owned, all had the James Brown DJ patter on them we're used to.
