I found a difference between the commercial 45 and the vinyl LP "Hearsay" (both the US pressings.) There is a difference from 2:11 to 2:20 on the vinyl LP, and from 2:13 to 2:22 on the 45. (About this time lag.. the 45 speed is slower than the LP.) But I am not able to explain well.

Just revisiting this song, and abagon is exactly right. At the breakdown (approx. 2:11 on both versions), there are different vocals on the 45 than on the LP. On the 45, there is some chatter but no singing. On the LP, the chatter is farther back in the mix, and there is an additional vocal overdub on found on the 45.

Dug out my 45s for this one. The commercial 45 is Tabu ZS4-07100, printed 3:10, actual 3:12, 111.4 BPM throughout, and came with a picture sleeve. The white-label promo 45 has the same 3:12 stereo version on both sides, and also has a picture sleeve (only difference is "DEMONSTRATION ONLY - NOT FOR SALE" printed near the bottom on the back of the sleeve).
The title on both 45s is "FAKE (EDITED VERSION)". I wasn't sure exactly what was edited, since I don't have the LP version anywhere. I checked my old edition of Pat's book, and will summarize:
So to clarify: the LP version is around 3:55, the 45 version is around 3:12, and the 45 can't be edited down from the LP because of the minor mix difference in the chatter around 2:11.
I have the 45 version on two CDs - a rare CBS promo CD called EPA With Our Compliments (1987; indexing a little off on this disc) and a K-Tel CD called Dance Power (1989). The K-Tel disc sounds very nice, and should be much easier to find than the promo disc.
To complicate matters further, the track was remixed in 1988 and became a sizable hit in the UK, where it hit #16 under the title "Fake '88". The rhythm track is much more subdued than the original mix, and is easily recognizable as being different from what came out in the US. The length is about 3:49. I have this '88 version on two UK CDs - the 5-CD set 100 Dance Hits Of The '80s (1990) and the 2-CD The Hits Album 9 . I think both are pretty uncommon nowadays.
According to the book, the 1988 remix turns up on Alexander O'Neal's Greatest Hits, but the original-mix 3:56 version turns up on his Best Of CD. Don't have either one myself.

Haven't heard the LP version of this.
I quickly listened to the Edit on the 12" single and it seems to match the 45, just chatter.
The break on the Extended Version is just music and one sung "fake" at the 16/32 count mid point.
The a cappella on the 12" has different chatter than the edit. It has a sung "fake" in it too.
