Though not a Top 40 Hit, I was wondering if anyone knew what version of "Something In The Way She Moves" is used on the "Best Of" CD.   It is very different from the version that I have always heard.

Thanks.

Fetta, I don't think Apple Records has ever "cross-licensed" any of their label
output to anyone else - ever, even to the Rhino/Collector's Choice type of
marquee reissue labels. So if JT and/or WB/Columbia wanted to include that
track on a hits package, he was gonna have to do a re-recording of it. The
only place I know of to obtain the original versions of both "Something..."
and his other most noteworthy early track, "Carolina On My Mind", is on the
Apple 90's CD reissue of his self-titled debut album. That CD may currently
be out of print, however.

On the recent Come And Get It/Best Of Apple Records disc track two is the original version of "Carolina In My Mind." The recent Apple remasters include JT's debut album featuring both "Something In The Way She Moves," "Carolina In My Mind," plus a demo version of the later.

Isn't the hit version of "Carolina In My Mind" on the Capitol Records 6-CD box?

/"Hit" being a relative term. . .

I went to Amazon so I could post a sample of the link for everyone to hear to get an accurate answer to the above and interestingly enough, several of the users reviews states that "Something In The Way She Moves" is the Apple Records version.....

Unfortunately, they do not include a song sample.

Just checked my "Best Of" disc and the notes say the track comes from James' Apple debut LP (recorded and mixed at Trident Studios in London in '68).

Can someone clear up a question for me. In 1968 Taylor put out his self-titled debut with Apple. That version on that album is the LP version.

The version we all know (and are used to hearing) that appears on Greatest Hits when was it done? It never charted on the Hot 100 but did that version ever get any play in the 1968-1969 period or was it re-recorded in the 70's because of the whole Apple debacle and the Beatles breaking up.

If anyone can clarify what to label it please advise. I don't think the re-recording belongs in the 60's and I want to know where to put it, how to label it. Thanks.

The "remake" of the song is from his 1976 "Greatest Hits" LP. "Carolina In
My Mind" on that LP is also re-recorded.

I believe it is safe to say that the "Greatest Hits" remake versions of "Carolina In My Mind" and "Something In The Way She Moves" have
retroactively become the accepted official hit* versions for both songs. {*I utilize the word "hit" in a loose fashion here.}
Undoubtedly, the Greatest Hits versions of these two songs have garnered more airplay in the decades since their release than the Apple
version ever did. This is due in part to the rise of soft rock FM stations and JT's Greatest Hits album being among the better selling
albums of his career (if it is not indeed THE best selling). The original Apple renditions, while interesting to listen to, aren't
exactly representative of the sound Taylor came to be known for when he made the move to WB. In fact, if you watch the TV performance
James does of "Carolina In My Mind" on the BBC the year that the Sweet Baby James album came to prominence (not that long after he left
Apple Records), you'll notice that he is already performing the song in the more relaxed and suitable style that would encompass the
Greatest Hits remake a handful of years later.
