my commercial 45 for the deodato song "also sprach zarathustra (2001) issued as cti 12 states a run time on the label as 5:06 but actually only runs 5:03...this should be noted in the db.... ------------- edtop40 |

The LP "2001" ran 9:02 (CTI 7081 the listed time 9:00). The reason I post is because all the LP version CD entries are shorter than the original vinyl LP version.

I dug out my copy and timed it, 5:03 actual time. And it was mastered by Rudy Van Gelder. Interesting about the CD version of the LP track being shorter. ------------- I turn up the good and turn down the bad! |

Does anyone know if a shorter radio edit/length of Deodato's "Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001)" was ever issued on a promo 45?
As for the LP version running shorter on CD than on the vinyl LP, it's possible there's a slight speed difference between the two sources that could easily result in a :05 timing difference over the course of a 9:00+ song. |

Thanks for your input, gentlemen. I haven't seen anything to suggest an official shorter version/length exists either, so unless some evidence comes along to the contrary I'm just going to assume that Deodato's record label intended for Top 40 radio stations to play the 45 version running 5:03.
By the way, was the commercial 45 issued in mono or stereo? |

above. But I've looked long and hard for a promo edit for many years, to no avail, as I remember hearing one as a current at times on my local Top 40 AM in '73. Almost certainly a custom splice job, it struck me as a weird place for an edit, though. As a personal fave, I would always turn the song up when it was on, so I remember their wacky edit well. I would've assumed the classic, 3-note "stairstep" keyboard sequence (followed by the classic 2-note "stinger flourish") would stay intact, no matter what. If I were doing a custom edit at the time, I would've probably just removed an entire song verse, likely trimming at least a minute off its length, I'm surmising. But their custom edit (only one splice, as I recall) was done in the late-middle-to-end of the 45, during the "stairstep" sequence. One of the "dum----dum----dum------DUM - DUM" passes instead went "dum----dum--dum------DUM - DUM". They cut the time between the second and third notes in half! Sounded *very* strange; don't know who signed off on it internally! This version's length was clearly shorter, as if they chose to eliminate a verse this way, instead of the more conventional method I mentioned earlier. Paul Drew was consulting this station at the time, so maybe someone else in range of one of his other stations in '73 might've heard the same thing. 1973 was the absolute heyday for custom edits (for example, this station also custom-bleeped the word "crap" out of "Kodachrome" - sorry, Ron, no offense! :) ), as Top 40 on-air rotation lists were probably at their tightest - Top 20 surveys were never more common than they were in 1973, as the last of the longtime "Top 60" surveys were all blown up by late '72, as the WABC-Rick Sklar "play the top 14 songs every hour" concept had them #1 by a mile, so coast-to- coast "copycats" were everywhere. 1973 was also the year of the "sped- up" records at my local station. Man, I remember hearing Chicago's "Just You 'N' Me" at 48RPM every hour giving me a headache! :) |
